Marlins don't expect Vazquez back: According to ESPN.com, the Marlins wouldn't have made the trade for SP Carlos Zambrano on Thursday if they weren't 100 percent convinced Javier Vazquez was retiring. Vazquez was 50-50 on retiring at the end of the 2011 season, but reports since then have suggested he was leaning toward it. His official decision is supposed to come at some point in January. Fantasy Analysis
Vazquez's retirement would be unfortunate for Fantasy owners because the 35-year-old clearly regained his form over the final two-thirds of 2011, posting a 2.70 ERA and 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings over his final 24 starts. If Vazquez returns, he would be worth drafting as a No. 3 or 4 Fantasy SP, but that's looking less and less likely at this point. (Updated 01/05/2012).

With the playoffs upon you, lineup decisions are more crucial than ever. Let Scott White's Week 25 Hitting Planner lead you down the right path.
If you saw Javier Vazquez pitch in the second half last year, you'd think you had gone back in time eight years. Limited early by the same loss of velocity that ruined him in New York, Vazquez suddenly rediscovered his form in late May. His grand re-entry into the Fantasy spotlight culminated in a 0.71 ERA in September, giving him a 1.85 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings over his final 18 starts. But before you target him as an under-the-radar ace, picturing him in an Expos uniform all over again, you might want to make sure he's actually going to pitch in 2012. He was 50-50 on retiring at the end of the season, and the deeper we get into the offseason, the more unlikely his return becomes. The Marlins have already turned to Carlos Zambrano instead, so apparently they're convinced Vazquez isn't coming back. The 35-year-old is still worth a flier in NL-only leagues in case he has an unexpected change of heart, but in mixed leagues, you'd be wasting your time with him. (Updated 1/25/12)
