| Fish sign Benitez to minor-league deal |
| (6/24/10) Florida signed RP Armando Benitez to a minor-league deal on Thursday, according to MLB.com. The 37-year-old veteran will join Triple-A New Orleans. Benitez has been playing independent baseball and not pitched in a MLB game since 2008. If he gets called up by the Marlins, it will be his third stint with the club. |

| (8/24/09) From The Sports Xchange: Former star closer Armando Benitez, who has nearly 300 major league saves in his career, signed a minor-league contract with the Astros after going 1-0 with 16 saves and a 2.86 ERA with Newark of the Independent League. Benitez, who was 40-47 with 289 saves and a 3.13 ERA from 1994 through 2008, was scouted recently by former Astros infielder Enos Cabell, a special assistant to GM Ed Wade. "Enos reported that Armando was in very good shape and was throwing well," Ed Wade said. "Tim Raines, who is managing the Newark club, believes that Benitez is highly motivated to get back to the big leagues. We'll give Armando a chance to finish the season at Round Rock and then determine where we go from there." |
