Preseason Outlook

After breaking out with 31 homers in 2003, Guillen spent the next few years establishing himself as a steady middle-of-the-order hitter, but he has had trouble living up to the same standard since signing a big free-agent contract with the Royals. Part of it is age -- the 33-year-old's body doesn't bounce back the way it used to, as evidenced by him missing the last 2 1/2 months last year with a hamstring injury -- but part of it is the likelihood he wasn't a great hitter in the first place. His supporting cast in Kansas City can't cover up his shortcomings the way some of his past supporting casts could. He has poor plate discipline and is one of the streakiest players in baseball. He can still pop 20 homers if he stays healthy, but the risk of injury makes him more of an AL-only option on Draft Day. (Updated 1/19/10)
