Preseason Outlook

Big Papi became Big Sloppy last year as his stats continued to take a tumble. His first home run didn't come until 135 at-bats into the season, and even though he connected for 27 the rest of the way, he hit only .248. At age 34, he has reached the point when other oversized sluggers such as Mo Vaughn and Cecil Fielder hit a wall, and he seems to be following suit, his OPS declining by nearly 300 points over the last couple years. Ortiz can still pop a few homers, but his days as an MVP candidate have ended, as have his days as an early-rounder in Fantasy. The Red Sox might even see fit to sit him occasionally against left-handers, against whom he hit only .212 last year. Now that the decline has started, it'll only snowball from here, meaning Ortiz probably doesn't have the capacity to hit more than .260 or so even with his high walk rate. Batting in the middle of the Red Sox lineup might buy him a year or two of productivity, but you wouldn't want to invest more than a middle-round pick in him. (Updated 1/19/10)
