Rangers sign Jared Burton to minor league deal

(5/24/2015) The Rangers signed Jared Burton to a minor league contract, per the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Burton was released by the Yankees on May 16 after going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA at Class A Tampa and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He will report to Triple-A Round Rock.

(4/30/2015) Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has stated that right-handed reliever Jared Burton, who has been dealing with an oblique injury sustained in spring training, could be assigned soon to Triple-A, per the Journal News.

Burton, who has been pitching in extended spring training, is seeking to land a spot in a deep Yankees bullpen after spending the last three seasons as a key reliever in Minnesota.

Burton, who is in camp on a minor-league deal, has tossed four scoreless innings in four relief appearances this spring. He has allowed two hits and has two strikeouts, while also going 2 for 2 in save chances.

(2/27/2015) Yankees reliever Jared Burton is in camp on a minor-league deal trying to earn a spot in the bullpen. Even though spring training just began, Burton likes how he is throwing the baseball, per NJ.com.

"I still think my stuff is as good as it's been," said Burton, who typically uses a fastball-changeup combination. "It's just the beginning of spring training. Everybody feels pretty fresh. But I feel like the ball is really coming out of my hand pretty well right now."

Although Burton didn't have an awful year in 2014, he is hoping he can bounce back in some regards since his ERA (4.36) was well higher than his career ERA (3.44) and his strikeout total also dropped last season.

"There's a little extra motivation as well," he said. "So I want to reestablish myself as one of the better relievers in the game."

(2/20/2015) The Yankees signed RHP Jared Burton to a minor league deal on Monday, with an invitation to the Major League camp. 

Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported on some of the details of Burton's contract with the Yankees.

Burton will make $2 million, if he spends the year on the Yankees roster. There are four opt-out dates, where Burton can request to be released, if he's in the minor leagues: March 30, June 1, August 1 and August 31. 

Burton also has performance incentives based on number of appearances. He gets a $30,000 bonus for making 20 appearances. That amount increases by $10,000 for each additional five appearances (i.e. $40,000 for 25, $50,000 for 30, $60,000 for 35) up to a maximum of $120,000 for 65 appearances.

(2/16/2015) The Yankees announced the signing of RHP Jared Burton on Monday. 

Burton spent the last three years with the Twins, following five seasons with the Reds. He appeared in 68 games out of the bullpen last season, compiling a 3-5 record with three saves and a 4.36 ERA. 

For his career, Burton is 18-19 with 10 saves and a 3.44 ERA. 

Burton signed a minor league contract with the Yankees with an invitation to Major League camp.

The 33-year-old Burton, who finished the year as the closer after Glen Perkins was shut down, compiled an ERA of 4.36, his worst since 2009. His control has weakened in each of his last three seasons and his strikeouts were well down in 2014.

Burton needed just six pitches to finish off the game. He had given up five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings over his last four appearances before pitching a clean frame Tuesday. Regular closer Glen Perkins could be available as soon as Wednesday, so Burton might not receive another save chance. He owns a 4.63 ERA and 42:24 K:BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings.

Burton was called in to pitch the final innings of each of the Twins' last two games, and he took the loss in both contests. While Burton has converted his one and only save opportunity this season, Fien is 1 for 5 in his attempts to convert saves.

Burton allowed one hit but needed only five pitches to complete a scoreless inning of work in the seventh. The team backed him up with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Burton owns a 4.43 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 42 2/3 innings of work this season.

"You always try to say you'll get him in some nonpressure situations, but I don't know if there are those in the big leagues," Gardenhire said. "So we'll try to get him in some situations where it's not the eighth and a one-run lead. I talked to him, and he says his arm feels good, but he's just not putting away hitters right now. So we talked about a few other routes he can go with the way he attacks hitters."

(7/2/2013) Twins reliever Jared Burton took his sixth relief loss Monday against the Yankees after he failed to hold a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning. Burton has been struggling the last few weeks, going 1-4 with an 11.00 ERA in his last 10 outings.

Despite his recent struggles, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he's sticking with Burton is high-pressure situations.

"We got it to the right guys at the end but Burton just had a rough time," Gardenhire said, per MLB.com. "He's had a couple scuffles here and we definitely need him. He's been very good for us and we desperately need him to get going again here. He's a big part of our bullpen as one of the last two guys."

(6/12/2013) Twins reliever Jared Burton is available to pitch for Minnesota for Wednesday's game against Philadelphia, MLB.com reports. Burton left Saturday's game against Washington with a groin issue. 

Burton threw a bullpen Wednesday and reported no issues. 

"Burton threw out in the bullpen and feels good," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I'll talk to [pitching coach Rick Anderson] as we go along here to see how much he threw out there, but his leg felt fine."
