Xavier Paul turns into valuable bench player for Reds

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/25/2013) Reds outfielder Xavier Paul hasn't seen a ton of playing time since Ryan Ludwick came off the disabled list, but that doesn't mean his presence off the bench isn't important.

"All the teams I've been on, you end up winning games off your bench. They either stop a losing streak or create or continue a long winning streak," manager Dusty Baker said, per MLB.com. "He probably won't start in [the Reds' next series at] St. Louis, but he'll come off the bench big, I'm sure. He's going to be in the equation. Those 0-for-1's are tough, real tough. Most of the time, when those 0-for-1's come, you're probably facing one of the better pitchers on their team out of the bullpen -- like [Edward] Mujica or somebody like that. He's not going to be facing some middle reliever, unless the bases are loaded and we want to try to get runs in the middle part of the ballgame."

"He'll probably be back hopefully on Wednesday," Reds manager Dusty Baker told MLB.com Monday. "He's able to pinch-hit [Monday]."

Paul feels he's been limited at the plate by the injury.

"It's something where my arm is pretty sore. My shoulder is sore. My elbow is sore," Paul told MLB.com. "I'm a little constricted throwing. I can't really turn it loose right now. I took early BP today and swung the bat pretty well."

"For Paul in spring training, most of his at-bats were against left-handers," Baker said, per MLB.com. "I told him that it was going to come into play some point in time during the course of the season. I didn't have a clue it was going to be now."
