Indians part ways with Nyjer Morgan

The 34-year-old hit .341 with three stolen bases in 15 games for Cleveland before suffering a sprained right knee that has kept him out since May.

(7/7/2014) Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan is seeking a second opinion on his injured right knee, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

"I don't know if it's a setback," manager Terry Francona said. "I think he just want to get a second opinion, which they're always encouraged to do."

Morgan has been out since mid-May after suffering a knee sprain, and he has been rehabbing the injured knee at the team's spring-training facility in Arizona. He has hit .321/.429/.439 in 41 at-bats.

(5/22/2014) Though he is not expected to require surgery, Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan found out he will be sidelined for quite a bit longer than expected Thursday.

 The Indians transferred Morgan to the 60-day disabled list in order to make room on the 40-man roster Thursday. This move will keep him out until at least mid-July, as a result of a sprained right knee suffered May 15.

Morgan had provided the Indians with a spark at times in two stints with them this year. He owns a .341 batting average in 41 at-bats with eight runs scored and three stolen bases.

(5/15/2014) Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan traveled back to Cleveland Thursday to have an MRI taken on his sprained right knee, the results of which are not yet known.

He was spotted with a brace on his knee and left the locker room on crutches Wednesday, but the extent of the injury is not yet known. Morgan was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday.

Morgan is dealing with a knee injury. He left Wednesday's game after banging his knee against the ground trying to make a play in the field. Jesus Aguilar was called up to take his spot on the roster. 

Morgan is hitting .341 in 41 at-bats.

(5/14/2014) Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan was wearing a knee brace after Wednesday's game, in which he suffered a "mild" right knee sprain, Cleveland.com reports.

"I hope it's not significant," Morgan said. "I hope it's not a problem. We have to wait and just see."

Morgan banged the knee on the ground during a defensive play in the fifth inning of Wednesday's game. The team isn't sure how much time Morgan will need to miss with the injury.

"We need to see how he shows up in the morning," manager Terry Francona said. "That's probably the best thing we can do."

Morgan had taken the place of another injured player but played just one inning before coming out of the game himself. He has hit .341/.429/.439 with one home run, six RBI and three stolen bases in 41 at-bats.

(4/9/2014) Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan continued his surprising start Tuesday night in filling in for the injured Michael Bourn. He smacked three singles, stole a base and drove in two in a defeat of San Diego.

Morgan has seven hits in his last 14 at-bats. He boasts an on-base percentage of .520 batting leadoff. His production will make it difficult for the team to send him down upon the return of Michael Bourn and Jason Giambi from minor-league rehab assignments.

The Indians purchased the contracts of reliever Scott Atchison, DH Jason Giambi and outfielder Nyjer Morgan. They also placed Michael Bourn (left hamstring strain) and Giambi (rib fracture) on the 15-day disabed list.

Pitchers Frank Herrmann and Colt Hynes were designated for assignment. Outfielder Matt Carson and infielder Ryan Rohlinger were reassigned to minor-league camp.

(1/14/2014) Former Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan appears on the verge of making his return to the majors after spending the 2013 season playing in Japan, according to ESPN. Morgan is closing in on a deal with an unspecified MLB team.

Morgan, who also played for the Pirates and Nationals, has a career .280 batting average and .341 on-base percentage in 583 games. He also has 117 stolen bases.

Morgan hit .294 with a .361 on-base percentage, 11 home runs, 15 doubles, 50 RBI and 57 runs in 108 games in Japan last season.
