Rangers option Rougned Odor after losing playing time to Rosales

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/11/2015) The Rangers have optioned second baseman Rougned Odor, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports.

The Dallas Morning News reported previously that Odor was on the verge of a demotion to Triple-A Round Rock. He has hit just .144/.252/.233 with one home run, nine RBI and one stolen base in 90 at-bats and has been out of the starting lineup for three straight games.

"Rougned definitely will be part of a winning formula in Arlington," manager Jeff Banister said, per MLB.com. "We felt it was time for Rougned to go down and get back to being the type of player that got him here: gritty, gutty, tough at-bats, play routine defense, play with his hair on fire all over the place.

"He is not unlike a lot of players who came up at a young age, had an amount of success, then the major-league atmosphere, major-league players, threw a punch at them. He needs to go down, get re-connected to the player he was, come back better and more capable of throwing a counter punch."

With Odor heading to Triple-A, Adam Rosales could see more playing time at second base moving forward. Rosales has started four of the last five games at second base but has hit just .167/.222/.310 in 42 at-bats.

In a corresponding move, the Rangers have purchased the contract of infielder Thomas Field from Round Rock. He has hit .298/.373/.538 with five home runs and 13 RBI in 104 Triple-A at-bats and is in the starting lineup Monday.

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Odor has started the last seven games in a row at second, but general manager Jon Daniels is considering a demotion to Triple-A Round Rock, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Daniels is preaching for his position players to step up and Odor is one of them. He is hitting just .148 with nine RBI in 81 at-bats this season.

"We believe he is part of the solution, not part of the problem," Daniels said to the Dallas Morning News. "He is working on some things. We're looking for some improvement."

The Rangers are currently the underdogs (+200) against Houston.

Rangers manager planning more rest days for starters

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/8/2015) Rangers manager Jeff Bannister is planning to give his starters more rest time this season, reports the Dallas Morning News. Wednesday, Bannister took outfielder Shin-Soo Choo out of the lineup to give Jake Smolinski the start and shuffled Adam Rosales in at third to move Adrian Beltre to DH and Mitch Moreland to the bench.

"You can't ask guys to sit on the bench for seven days and then expect them to be effective," Banister said. "But I also believe what you gain on the front end of the year proves worthy on the other side.

"Guys may have just been at spring training, but spring training is 40-plus days of grinding, too," he added. "This is a 183-day marathon. If there are ways we can help guys show up better and then get five, six, seven days of dynamic play from them, we're going to do that."

He is also not worried about Choo's defense.

"It has nothing to do with what I think of Shin-Soo Choo's defense," Banister said. "He missed time in spring with an elbow issue. He is coming off a lower body injury from last year. He had gone hard after a couple of balls earlier in the game and he was eight batters away from coming up again. It was an opportunity to get fresh legs and a fresh arm in there. I don't foresee it becoming a regular occurrence."
