Dale Thayer pressed into late action

(6/11/2013) Padres interim closer Luke Gregerson was unavailable Monday after pitching on eight of the last 12 days, so the team turned the ninth inning over to Dale Thayer Monday to close out the Braves in a 7-6 win.

Thayer entered the game after Tim Stauffer allowed three runs with one out and proceeded to close out the game. He allowed a solo home run to trim the lead to one but got the final two outs on 13 pitches for his first save of the season.

Thayer has a 3.38 ERA in 29 1/3 innings, mostly working as a setup man.

(6/1/2013) With Huston Street on the disabled list with a calf injury, Padres manager Bud Black told U-T San Diego Saturday that reliever Luke Gregerson is "probably the guy we turn to most."

The team's other option would be Dale Thayer.

Gregerson has a 0.76 ERA and a 0.59 WHIP through 24 appearances. He has an 18-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 23 2/3 innings pitched. Thayer has a 3.22 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP with a 22-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 22 1/3 innings pitched this season.
