Jesus Guzman hits second home run Sunday

(4/7/2014) Astros first baseman Jesus Guzman clubbed his second home run of the season Sunday.

Guzman struck out in his first at-bat, but got the better of Jered Weaver the second time around. Guzman hit a home run on an 87 mph cutter in the bottom of the fourth inning. He also singled in his next at-bat.

Guzman finished the game 2 for 4, with one run and one RBI.


Jesus Guzman launches HR in first start

(4/2/2014) Jesus Guzman drew the first start at first base for the Astros during Tuesday's season opener against the Yankees and helped contribute to a 6-2 win. Guzman capped off a four-run first inning against CC Sabathia with a two-run homer. 

Guzman, who is expected to rotate with Marc Krauss and Chris Carter at first base, hit .189 with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI in 21 spring games.

Astros will have 'heated competition' for first-base job

(1/9/2014) During an interview with the Houston Chronicle, Astros manager Bo Porter gave no indication who might start at first base. The Astros have plenty of candidates, though, including Brett Wallace, Jesus Guzman, Chris Carter and prospect Jonathan Singleton.

"It’s going to be a heated competition," Porter said. "I like the guys that we have. At the end of the day, I believe that the player that ends up winning the first-base job will obviously make our lineup and make us a better team."


Padres trade Jesus Guzman to Astros for Ryan Jackson

(12/18/2013) The Padres have traded outfielder/first baseman Jesus Guzman to the Astros for infielder Ryan Jackson, the teams announced Wednesday.

Guzman, 29, hit .226/.297/.378 with nine home runs and 35 RBI in 288 at-bats with the Padres last season. He has played 113 games at first base, 93 games in left field and 13 games in right field in four seasons with the Padres.

Jackson was claimed off waivers by the Astros in November after spending five years in the Cardinals ogranization. He hit .278/.352/.346 with three home runs, 34 RBI and nine stolen bases in 442 at-bats with Triple-A Memphis last season. Jackson has spent most of his minor-league career at shortstop.

(7/23/2013) Padres first baseman Jesus Guzman homered and drove in three runs during Monday's 5-3 win at Milwaukee. Guzman finished 2 for 4 with one double.

Guzman is batting .300 (15 for 50) with three home runs, six doubles, six runs and 10 RBI in 16 July games (12 starts). He has a .600 slugging percentage and .952 OPS in July as well.

(7/4/2013) Padres first baseman Jesus Guzman had a trio of hits in Thursday's loss to Boston.

Guzman was 3 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. He is hitting .238/.306/.385 and will likely return to the bench when Yonder Alonso comes back from an injury.

(6/19/2013) Padres first baseman Jesus Guzman homered for the second game in a row Wednesday, a solo shot in a 4-2 loss to the Giants.

Guzman finished the game 1 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout. He is batting .237 on the season with three home runs in 114 at-bats.

(6/6/2013) Padres infielder Jesus Guzman had his second solid game in a row Wednesday against the Dodgers filling in for Yonder Alonso at first base.

Guzman went 3 for 4, his second multi-hit game in a row. He had an RBI double in the sixth inning and scored once in the 6-2 win.

Guzman is hitting .233 in 90 at-bats and has raised his batting average from .195 over the last two games. 


Jesus Guzman hits first homer in grand fashion

(5/12/2013) Padres outfielder Jesus Guzman slugged a pinch-hit grand slam during the seventh inning to give San Diego a short-lived lead in an 8-7 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday night. Guzman substituted for John Baker and tallied his first homer of the season in his 28th game to chase Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson.

Playing time has been minimal for Guzman recently as his last start came May 3 against Arizona. He is hitting just .236 as four of his six RBI this season came on the grand slam.


Jesus Guzman gets a start Thursday

(5/2/2013) Padres first baseman Jesus Guzman will start at first base Thursday.

Guzman is replacing Yonder Alonso, who is receiving a routine day off. Guzman will hit fifth Thursday. He hasn't started a game since April 21. Guzman is hitting .238/.319/.286 in 42 at-bats this season.

(4/5/2013) Jesus Guzman will replace the injured Yonder Alonso in the Padres' lineup Friday against Colorado.

Alonso was injured in a collision with Mets outfielder Colin Cowgill on Thursday. The injury isn't expected to be serious, although it's unclear how long Alonso will be out. Guzman will likely take the reins at first base until he returns.


Guzman adds to HR total


(7/25/2012) Padres first baseman/outfielder Jesus Guzman had his best game of the season in Wednesday's series finale against the Giants. He went 3 for 4 with two home runs and three runs scored in the 6-3 win. He singled in the fourth inning before launching a two-run shot off Tim Lincecum the following frame. Then in the eighth, he led off the inning with a solo bomb. Guzman now has six long balls on the year.
