Phils get Youman from Pirates

(11/28/2007) The Phillies acquired left-hander Shane Youman off waivers from the Pirates.

Pirates designate Youman for assign.

(11/21/2007) The Pirates added shortstop Brian Bixler and right-handers Olivio Astacio and Ronald Belisario to the 40-man roster. In order to make room, left-hander Shane Youman, first baseman Josh Phelps and right-hander Josh Sharpless were all designated for assignment. They have 10 days to trade, release or outright them to the minor leagues.

Youman considered for Tuesday

(9/8/2007) The Pirates have not announced a starter for next Tuesday night's game with Milwaukee and Tracy said the candidates include LHP Shane Youman and RHPs Bryan Bullington and John Van Benschoten.

Youman blasted in two-plus innings

(9/1/2007) Pirates SP Shane Youman lasted only two-plus innings during Saturday's loss to the Brewers. After retiring the side in the first, he gave up five runs in the second and three in the third. He allowed seven hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Youman won't start Tuesday

(8/27/2007) The Sports Xchange notes: LHP Shane Youman will not start the second game of Tuesday night's doubleheader against Cincinnati as originally scheduled because he was needed to pitch two innings and throw 40 pitches in relief in Friday night's 15-inning win at Houston. Youman most likely will start Friday night at Milwaukee in the opener of a three-game series.

Youman picks up relief win

(8/25/2007) Reliever Shane Youman (3-4) pitched the last two innings for the win at Houston Friday.

Youman to make start Tuesday

(8/23/2007) SP Shane Youman will pitch the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday for the Pirates against Cincinnati.

Youman heads to the bullpen

(8/18/2007) Manager Jim Tracy said that LHP Shane Youman was available for bullpen duty this weekend and that, for now, RHP Tony Armas would remain in the rotation as the fifth starter.

Youman takes his fourth loss

(8/14/2007) Shane Youman allowed five earned runs, four hits and four walks in six innings of work in the second game of a doubleheader on Monday against the Giants. Ryan Klesko's 10th career grand slam came in the sixth against Youman (2-4), who is 0-4 since the All-Star break. The Pirates looked to be out of the inning when Dan Ortmeier grounded to the mound with the bases loaded, but Josh Phelps -- catching for the first time since 2001 -- was fooled by Youman's soft throw to the plate and didn't try to get the runner at first. Klesko then homered on a 3-2 pitch. "We gave them four outs," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said. "I don't know what happened. The changeup he [Youman] threw fooled Josh. Josh did the right thing by holding onto the ball."

Youman to start on Monday

(8/11/2007) LHP Shane Youman was taken out of the bullpen to start one of the games Monday against the Giants in a makeup doubleheader in Pittsburgh. He threw an extended session to get ready on Friday.

Youman in bullpen until Aug. 13 now

(8/5/2007) After Sunday's rainout, Pirates No. 5 starter Tony Armas will be skipped in the rotation, meaning Matt Morris will still face the team that traded him Tuesday, the San Francisco Giants, in only his second start for Pittsburgh on Friday. Rookie Shane Youman will make a spot start during a doubleheader in Pittsburgh against the Giants on Aug. 13. He was removed from the rotation when the Pirates acquired Morris.

Youman battles Armas for last spot

(8/3/2007) Manager Jim Tracy would not commit to who would hold onto the fifth starter spot now that Morris has joined the team. RHP Tony Armas had a solid outing Wednesday and LHP Shane Youman allowed three runs in five innings on Thursday, and Tracy indicated one would be removed from the rotation and join the bullpen.

Youman has a fair outing

(8/2/2007) Making his sixth start of the season and ninth of his career, Shane Youman allowed three runs, five hits and three walks in five innings on Thursday against the Cardinals in a no-decision. With this week's acquisition of Matt Morris, Youman might have been auditioning to keep his rotation spot. "For the most part, I felt fine -- until I got to that fourth inning, and with two outs I was kind of trying to nitpick, which is not my game, and it got me in trouble," Youman said.

Youman's spot in jeopardy

(7/31/2007) The San Francisco Giants traded RHP Matt Morris for 26-year-old center fielder OF Rajai Davis and a player to be named later from the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday.

Youman drops 3rd straight start

(7/28/2007) Pirates SP Shane Youman didn't record an out in the fifth inning during Saturday's loss to the Phillies before being yanked from the game. He allowed seven runs -- six earned -- and eight hits. He also issued three walks while striking out three. Youman has now lost three straight starts and has allowed 11 earned runs in 17 innings during his losing streak.

Youman takes tough 1-0 loss

(7/22/2007) SP Shane Youman, moved up in the Pirates' rotation so the struggling John Van Benschoten could skip a start, limited the Astros to four hits over eight innings but still took the 1-0 loss Sunday. Half of Houston's hits came in the sixth, with Brad Ausmus leading off with the first of his two singles before moving up on a pair of ground outs and scoring on Luke Scott's single to center. Youman walked two and struck out three.

Youman tabbed to start Sun.

(7/21/2007) Pirates SP John Van Benschoten (0-4, 8.17 ERA) will be skipped over his scheduled start Sunday against Houston with Shane Youman (2-1) taking his place. Van Benschoten won't start again until Friday in Philadelphia so he can work on flaws in his delivery the Pirates believe they have discovered.

SP Youman thumped by the Rox

(7/18/2007) Shane Youman, who was making his third start of the season, allowed five runs -- four earned -- and eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings against the Rockies on Tuesday to take his first loss (2-1) of the season.

Youman beats Cubs Sunday

(7/8/2007) Shane Youman held Chicago to two runs over six innings in Pittsburgh's 6-2 victory Sunday over the Cubs. He allowed plenty of base runners -- eight in six innings -- but worked his way out of major problems with minimal damage several times. He allowed two runs.

Pirates set post A-S rotation

(7/7/2007) The Sports Xchange reports Pirates SPs Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny and Paul Maholm will start in the three-game series in Atlanta coming out of the All-Star break July 13-15. Youman recalled from Triple-A

(7/2/2007) The Pirates recalled LHP Shane Youman from Triple-A Indianapolis. He will take the rotation spot of Zach Duke (elbow, 15-day DL).

Youman enters Pirates' rotation

(7/1/2007) Pirates SP Zach Duke was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after skipping a planned throwing session and will have tests Monday on his sore left elbow. Duke has been bothered by tightness in the elbow that was apparently caused by tendinitis. The tests Monday will determine whether there is any structural damage inside Duke's elbow. "I still felt the same, so there wasn't any reason for me to throw today," Duke said. "It's scary to have to miss time in the rotation like this. This is my first time with something like this. I've never gone through this before."
