Report: Tyler Colvin hooks on with Giants

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2/22/2014) Free agent outfielder Tyler Colvin has signed with the Giants, the San Jose Mercury News has reported. A failed physical spoiled his deal with Baltimore last week. Rumors that Colvin could still fit in with the Orioles ended when that team signed Nelson Cruz.

Colvin did not enjoy a successful season heading into free agency. Coming off a fine year with the Rockies, he spent most of 2013 at Triple-A Colorado Springs. He batted just .160 in 75 at-bats with Colorado.

Tyler Colvin could still sign with Orioles despite nixed deal

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/17/2014) There's still a "good chance" free-agent outfielder Tyler Colvin signs with the Orioles after a previous deal between the two sides fell through due to concerns regarding Colvin's physical, the Denver Post reports.

Colvin reportedly received multiple minor-league offers after his previous deal with the Orioles was nixed, and it's possible his deal with the Orioles ends up being of the minor-league variety. He hit .275/.377/.480 with nine home runs, 32 RBI and six stolen bases in 229 at-bats with Triple-A Colorado Springs last season.

Tyler Colvin stuck in 0-for-16 slump

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/23/2013) Rockies outfielder/first baseman Tyler Colvin struck out in a pinch-hit appearance against the Nationals Saturday, making him 0 for 16 over his last six games. He has just seven hits in 39 at-bats, though three have been home runs.

Tyler Colvin's strikeout rate still an issue

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6/17/2013) Rockies outfielder Tyler Colvin has made the most of his limited opportunity this year, but his strikeout rate could still become a problem for Fantasy owners.

Strikeouts have limited Colvin's average his entire career, leading to a .248/.297/.473 career slash line. While Colvin did hit .290 last season, his numbers were propped up by a .364 BABIP. Colvin's career BABIP is .297, so that's way out of line for him. Colvin struck out 23.5 percent of the time in Triple-A this year, and he doesn't figure to get much better in the majors. As Colvin has shown, he's capable of hitting for solid power. But he's definitely going to struggle to hit much higher than .250 unless he starts striking out less.

Tyler Colvin earning trust early

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/12/2013) Rockies outfielder Tyler Colvin impressed manager Walt Weiss so much in a pair of pinch-hitting appearances in his first two games since being called up that he earned a starting nod Tuesday against the Nationals. And, with the way Colvin took advantage of his opportunity, Weiss will have little reason to take him out of the lineup moving forward.

Colvin homered twice Tuesday, both of which came with one runner on, as he drove in four runs in an 8-3 win. Colvin went 2 for 4 overall in the game, scoring twice and striking out twice as well.

Prior to the game, Weiss praised Colvin's early play.

"Tyler has done great in the short time he's been here," Weiss told MLB.com. "He's squared up some balls that didn't get through and drove in a run with another single. He's taken some very good at-bats."

Tyler Colvin finally joins the Rockies

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/8/2013) With Michael Cuddyer dealing with an oblique injury, the Rockies called up outfielder Tyler Colvin from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Josh Outman was optioned to make room for Colvin.

Colvin batted .293 with a .914 OPS at Colorado Springs, after failing to make the team out of spring training. Colvin hit .290 with an .857 OPS last season for the Rockies.

Tyler Colvin plugging away at Triple-A

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2013) Rockies outfielder Tyler Colvin hasn't let a demotion to the minors affect his ability to put the baseball in play at Triple-A Colorado Springs. Colvin is batting .297 with a .340 on-base percentage and .516 slugging percentage through 24 games.

Colvin also has two triples, four doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI and 14 runs. Colvin has spent the entire season in the minors following his demotion at the end of spring training.

Is it worth holding on to Tyler Colvin?

by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/2/2013) Recently-demoted Rockies first baseman Tyler Colvin, who has seen his ownership plummet, from 26 percent to 15 percent, is in the top five of this site's Most Dropped list. It makes sense -- Colvin struggled this spring and the Rockies seem committed to starting Todd Helton at first.

But does Colvin deserve the widespread dropping in Fantasy leagues? When Colvin was demoted, manager Walt Weiss said he just needed to iron things out with his swing. In the meantime, Michael Cuddyer can play some first base to spell Helton, with Eric Young playing the outfield. Colvin hit .290 last year, with 18 home runs and seven steals in 420 at-bats. If it's just a matter of getting some swings in, he could work things out and be back up in a couple of weeks. However, he may not have a role when he does, with Helton at first and the outfield full.

I'm holding Colvin in my deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats, but if someone drops Drew Stubbs, for instance, Colvin's going to be my first cut. I was very high on Colvin early -- I still am -- but it's tough to see where he fits in. If he's traded, it's a different story entirely. But if Colvin is recalled and relegated to a bench role, he may not be worth the roster spot.
