Kevin Whalen back with Detroit organization

(2/22/2014) Right-hander Kevin Whalen, who had only a cup of coffee in the majors with the Yankees in 2011, is back with the organization that drafted him in 2005. The 30-year-old reliever has signed with the Tigers.

Whalen has yielded just 296 hits with 562 strikeouts in 443 2/3 innings during his minor league career. But those impressive numbers haven't translated into success. He has averaged five walks per nine innings, which has prevented him from being promoted.

(3/25/2012) The New York Yankees made another round of roster cuts and shifted the following players to their minor-league camp: Ramiro Pena (Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre), Manny Delcarmen, Kevin Whelan, Jose Gil, Colin Curtis and Cole Garner.
