Nationals trim eight from roster

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/18/2013) The Washington Nationals made another wave of roster cuts Monday and optioned the following players to Triple-A Syracuse: pitchers Ryan Perry, Erik Davis and Yunesky Maya, first baseman Chris Marrero, catcher Jhonatan Solano and outfielder Corey Brown. In addition, the Nationals also reassigned pitcher Ross Ohlendorf and shortstop Zach Walters to their minor-league camp.

Marrero the odd-man out?

(2/15/2013) Nationals manager Davey Johnson told MLB.com on Friday that he plans on giving Chris Marrero a serious look this spring but admits his chances of making the 25-man roster are slim. Marrero could serve as the backup first baseman in Washington but Tyler Moore is expected to fill that role. Marrero did not play in the majors last season after tearing his left hamstring last winter. "My heart goes out to him, because I thought he was getting his feet wet and I thought he did a good job," Johnson said. "Then, he had that severe hamstring injury [during winter ball] and basically lost most of the year."
