Brent Lillibridge demoted by Rangers

(3/22/2014) The Rangers have dispatched veteran backup infielder Brent Lillibridge to minor league camp. He was already dealing with a hamstring pull sustained Friday.

Lillibridge was 8 for 28 this spring after a miserable 2013 in which he batted a meager .119 in 59 at-bats with the Cubs and Yankees.

(3/21/2014) Rangers infielder Brent Lillibridge was forced to leave Thursday's game against the Reds due to a tight right hamstring. Lillibridge finished the game 1 for 3 at second base, with one strikeout, before exiting as a result of the injury.

Lillibridge is in camp on a minor-league deal, and is hitting .286 in 13 appearances so far during the spring. He hit just .119 in 59 at-bats last season, however.

It was Lillibridge's first game since Thursday after dealing with a jammed finger over the past few days. His two-hit performance makes him 7 for 12 with one home run and three RBI this spring.

Lillibridge should be good to go after a few days of rest. He is 5 for 10 with one home run and three RBI in Cactus League competition.


Rangers hand out minor-league contracts

(12/12/2013) The Rangers signed third baseman Brent Lillibridge, second baseman Josh Wilson, third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff, right-hander Armando Rodriguez and right-hander Doug Mathis to minor-league contracts Thursday. Lillibridge, Wilson, Kouzmanoff and Rodriguez also received invitations to spring training.

Kouzmanoff is the most notable of these players, having hit 15-plus homers in four straight seasons from 2007 to 2010. But the 32-year-old hasn't played in the majors since 2011, which he split between the Athletics and the Rockies.

(7/19/2013) The Yankees have recalled utility player Brent Lillibridge from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, MLB.com reports.

Lillibridge, 29, played everywhere but catcher for the White Sox and Red Sox in 2012. He went just 1 for 24 in his only MLB action this year with the Cubs but has a .355/.425/.724 line for Scranton Wilkes-Barre. He'll serve as infield depth for the Yankees.

Lillibridge went just 1 for 24 before being designated for assignment earlier this week. He was forced into a starting role at second base thanks to injuries to Darwin Barney and Ian Stewart.

The team added Cody Ransom through a waiver claim, and got Darwin Barney back from injury, so Lillibridge was expendable. Lillibridge played in nine games with the team this season.

(3/30/2013) With Darwin Barney suffering a gash to his knee, Cubs manager Dale Sveum is leaning toward utility infielder Brent Lillibridge to start Monday's season opener against the Pirates at second base.

Lillibridge made the team thanks to a hot spring, batting .333 with a .948 OPS. He has appeared in 60 games at second base in his career, including three starts last season for the Indians. 

Lillibridge is expected to serve as a backup infielder once Barney returns.

(2/25/2013) Cubs manager Dale Sveum told ESPN.com that if camp broke on Monday, Brent Lillibridge would likely be the club's utility player. Lillibridge, who is in camp on a minor-league deal, has played all over the field throughout his career and is well-known for his versatility. “You always want to hear that you are on the radar,” Lillibridge said. “I am going to do what I have done every spring training -- get my work in and try to have good at-bats. I have been working my butt off all winter to be ready for an opportunity. If I showcase what I can do, then it will be a no-brainer for them. If that happens, hopefully I will be in Chicago soon.”
