Twins send two shortstops back to the minors

(6/30/2014) The Twins announced Monday they optioned shortstop Pedro Florimon to Triple-A Rochester and shortstop Jorge Polanco to Class A Fort Myers. Polanco made his MLB debut Thursday against the Angels and hit .400 (2 for 5) with three RBI, two runs and two walks in four games.

Florimon will take Trevor Plouffe's spot on the active roster. Plouffe will be placed on the disabled list with an oblique injury. Florimon has been up with the team this season. He hit .108 over 65 at-bats.

(5/4/2014) Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Sunday he doesn't have a primary shortstop, as he continues to rotate between Pedro Florimon and Eduardo Escobar. Danny Santana has also joined the mix after his promotion from the minors Saturday.

"Whoever is out there that day is my shortstop," Gardenhire said, per MLB.com. "I have confidence in anybody I put out there."

Gardenhire said he wants to give Florimon as many opportunities to start because of his defense, but his poor start offensively has kept him from being the everyday shortstop.

"He's been fighting it a little bit [offensively]," Gardenhire said. "You watch him with that glove and the way he makes it easy out there, and that's why you love him so much. But Esco has been swinging good, and Santana is ready to rock and roll. I can promise you that."

"He looked fine," said assistant general manager Rob Antony, who watched some of Florimon's appearance on a side field at Hammond Stadium. "It still looks like he's trying to get his timing down, which is to be expected."

(3/9/2014) Twins shortstop Pedro Florimon is participating in fielding drills and batting practice and has reported no issues since undergoing mid-February surgery to have his appendix removed, per The Star Tribune.

Florimon hopes to make his spring debut within a week. If that happens, then he should have plenty of time to prepare for the start of the season.

“I think 25, 30 at-bats, and I think I would be ready,” he said.

"I feel better," Florimon said. "I don't know [if I'll be ready for the start of the year]. I need to get game-ready and get back and play."

The team could backdate the disabled-list assigment, meaning that Florimon wouldn't necessary miss a full 15 regular-season days. He'll be the team's regular shortstop when healthy after hitting .221/.281/.330 with nine home runs, 44 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 403 at-bats last season.

Florimon hopes to resume hitting in the batting cages next week, but he doesn't want to rush his recovery. "I have to take it slow," he said.

(9/2/2013) Twins shortstop Pedro Florimon had a nice game in a 10-6 win at Houston Monday. Florimon recorded two hits and stole a base for Minnesota.

Florimon went 2 for 4 with two singles and two RBI for the Twins. His single to center in the fourth inning drove in a run as did his single in the eighth. Florimon stole his 13th base and is batting .228 on the year.

The 26-year-old shortstop has hits in six of his last nine contests and has four multi-hit games over that stretch with three RBI.

The shortstop struck out three times on the game and lowered his batting average to .228 on the year in the process. 

Florimon, 26, has struck out 74 times this season over 89 games played.

Florimon hit the third HR off Hughes Saturday and his fifth of the season. Florimon finished 1 for 2 with a walk and is batting .230. He was also caught stealing.
