Indians finalize opening day roster

(3/30/2014) The Indians announced several roster moves Sunday as they finalize their opening day roster.

The Indians purchased the contracts of reliever Scott Atchison, DH Jason Giambi and outfielder Nyjer Morgan. They also placed Michael Bourn (left hamstring strain) and Giambi (rib fracture) on the 15-day disabed list.

Pitchers Frank Herrmann and Colt Hynes were designated for assignment. Outfielder Matt Carson and infielder Ryan Rohlinger were reassigned to minor-league camp.


Matt Carson waived by Indians

(3/22/2014) Veteran outfielder Matt Carson has lost his bid for a roster spot with the Indians. He was released on Saturday.

The 32-year-old career minor leaguer helped the team earn a playoff spot late last season by smacking seven hits in 11 at-bats, including a game-winning single against Houston.

Carson was bothered by a hand injury over the weekend but needed just two days off before getting back on the field. He has hit .269/.367/.462 with one home run and four RBI in 26 at-bats.

(3/16/2014) Indians outfielder Matt Carson was scratched from the lineup Sunday against the Cubs because of a hand injury, MLB.com reports. Carson was was hit on the hand by a pitch Friday.

"He went out and did some stuff today," manager Terry Francona said. "In his own words, he says he's 80 percent. That doesn't make much sense for him to play."

Carson was down on the ground for a few minutes but was able to get up before being carted off the field. He went 0 for 3 with a strikeout before the early exit and is batting .250 this spring.
