Carlos Pena released by Rangers

(8/18/2014) The Rangers have released first baseman Carlos Pena Monday.

Pena was signed in June, and had a brief audition in the majors. He hit just .136 over 59 at-bats. The Rangers designated Pena for assignment, and initially sent him to Triple-A. Though Pena hit well at Triple-A, the team still decided to let him go.

It was the second straight start at first base for Pena, who was brought up from Triple-A Round Rock Tuesday. Including an 0-for-4 performance in his season debut, Pena has hit .222/.222/.556 in nine at-bats.

With the Astros and Royals last year, Pena batted .207 with eight homers and 25 RBI in 280 at-bats.

(1/28/2014) The Angels have agreed to minor-league deals with outfielder Brennan Boesch and first baseman Carlos Pena, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Boesch hit .275/.302/.529 with three home runs and eight RBI in 51 at-bats before being released by the Yankees in July. He was optioned to the minors in late May and suffered a shoulder injury before his release.

Pena hit .209/.324/.350 with eight home runs and 25 RBI in 277 at-bats with the Astros last season before being released at the end of July. He eventually landed in Kansas City but was just 0 for 3 with the Royals.

Pena, 35, spent the first four months of the season with the Astros, hitting .209/.324/.350 with eight home runs and 25 RBI in 277 at-bats. He was signed by the Royals in August, going 0 for 3 with three strikeouts in four appearances with Kansas City.

(9/14/2013) Royals first baseman Carlos Pena will miss the rest of the season after undergoing an emergency appendectomy Saturday, the Kansas City Star reports. 

Pena, who had been serving as a left-handed bat off the bench for the Royals, is done for the year. He finishes with a .207 batting average, eight homers and 25 RBI over 280 at-bats.

(9/3/2013) The Kansas City Royals promoted the following six players to the roster Tuesday before a game against Seattle, the Kansas City Star reports. 

As expected, Louis Coleman and Wade Davis have rejoined the bullpen from Class A Wilmington. The Royals also promoted for Triple-A Omaha players as infielder Johnny Giavotella and reliever Donnie Joseph were recalled and Carlos Pena and Pedro Ciriaco had their contracts purchased. 

Kansas City cleared space on the 40-man roster by moving pitcher Noel Arguelles to the 60-day disabled list and designating infielder Edinson Rincon for assignment. Rincon was at Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Pena last played for Houston in the majors this season. The 35-year-old hit .209 over 277 at-bats with eight homers and 25 runs driven in.

(6/19/2013) Astros first baseman Carlos Pena connected for a three-run homer off Brewers starter Alfredo Figaro Tuesday. It was his seventh home run and first in 11 games.

Pena hasn't had an overly productive June. He's homered three times in 16 games, but he's batting just .157 (8 for 51) with 16 strikeouts. Pena has two doubles, six RBI, six walks and eight runs in June as well.

(6/11/2013) Astros manager Bo Porter shuffled his lineup Tuesday against the Mariners, dropping catcher Jason Castro down to the No. 2 spot, hitting second baseman Jose Altuve third and first baseman Carlos Pena at cleanup.

"Carlos has been swinging the bat well," Porter said, according to the Houston Chronicle. "More so I'm trying to protect Carlos and Castro and putting Altuve in between them so if they want to bring in a lefty they still have to [face] Altuve before they get to Carlos."

Pena hit his sixth HR of the season in the first inning, a two-run shot off starter Freddy Garcia. He finished 1 for 3 with a walk and is batting .242. 

The 35-year-old has three hits in his last four games but two for homers. He has six home runs and 18 RBI.

(4/17/2013) Astros first baseman Carlos Pena tied the game at 3 in the eighth inning Tuesday against the Athletics with a solo home run off Sean Doolittle. It was Pena's first home run of the season.

"The ball seems to carry a lot better in the day here, so I was pleased to see it go out," Pena said, per MLB.com. "I knew I hit it well, but I didn't know it was out until I was almost at second. I just took off running."

Pena finished 1 for 2 with one strikeout and two walks. He's batting .360 (9 for 25) with one home run, four doubles, five RBI, six runs and six walks in his last seven games. Pena hit just .130 (3 for 23) with no extra-base hits or RBI in his first seven games.

(4/7/2013) The Astros gave designated hitter Carlos Pena his first day off Sunday against Oakland. Chris Carter started at DH. 

Pena did appear in the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning, flying out to center field for Marwin Gonzalez. 

Entering Sunday, Pena was 3 for 18 (.167) and has yet to homer or drive in a run.
