(2/28/2008) Utilityman Scott Spiezio was cut by the Cardinals on Wednesday, released after police issued a six-count warrant for his arrest following a December car crash. "We hope Scott will continue to seek appropriate help and wish him the best in baseball, but more importantly in life," Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said. Josh Phelps' chances to make the team as Albert Pujols' backup just increased dramatically.

Cards add Phelps on minor deal


(1/10/2008) First baseman Josh Phelps and the Cardinals agreed to a minor league contract Thursday, adding depth to St. Louis' bench. In seven seasons with Toronto, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh, Phelps has 64 home runs, 243 RBIs and a .273 batting average. He hit .263 in 36 games with the Yankees last season before being waived and signed by Pittsburgh in June. He hit .351 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 58 games with the Pirates. Phelps' best seasons were in Toronto, where he began his career in 2000. He batted .309 in part-time duty with the Blue Jays in 2002 and hit 20 home runs in 2003. The 29-year-old Phelps will have a chance to make the major league club in spring training, Cardinals spokesman Brian Bartow said. Phelps has also appeared at catcher in 12 big league games.

(9/26/2007) Pinch-hitter Josh Phelps, in a 3-for-25 slump, singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth after Pittsburgh blew a four-run lead in the top of the inning, and the Pirates halted a nine-game losing streak by beating the Diamondbacks 6-5 on Tuesday night. Phelps has a .308 average (8-for-26) with eight RBI as a pinch-hitter.

(8/23/2007) Colorado's series against the Pittsburgh Pirates left Rockies manager Clint Hurdle feeling sick. Josh Phelps had three RBI and a career-high four hits, Paul Maholm scattered seven hits over seven innings and Pittsburgh beat Colorado 5-1 Thursday. Phelps, who was acquired off waivers from the New York Yankees on June 22, went 4-for-5 in his sixth start for the Pirates. "I've got some stuff that I'm sticking to that I'm ready when I get up there," Phelps said. "I'm not wasting any time and I take the approach that I'm gonna take a rip at the first thing I think I can handle and after that I'm going to let it fall where it may."

(8/14/2007) Phelps started at catcher on Monday night in the second game of a doubleheader against the Giants. The Pirates looked to be out of the sixth inning when Dan Ortmeier grounded to the mound with the bases loaded, but Josh Phelps -- catching for the first time since 2001 -- was fooled by Shane Youman's soft throw to the plate and didn't try to get the runner at first. Ryan Klesko then homered on a 3-2 pitch for a grand slam. "We gave them four outs," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said. "I don't know what happened. The changeup he [Youman] threw fooled Josh. Josh did the right thing by holding onto the ball."

(8/13/2007) 1B Josh Phelps looked good in his first start since July 27, hitting a two-run homer and a two-run triple. He's hitting .300 since Pittsburgh claimed him off waivers from the Yankees, but hasn't played regularly. "He's walked in here and handled everything we've asked of him," manager Jim Tracy said. "He's a good addition to our club."

Manager Joe Torre's inclination is to continue to play Cairo as long as the offense is clicking because he's a stronger defensive presence than 1B Josh Phelps, but Phelps was given the start on Saturday afternoon in order to give Cairo a day off.
