Shawn Camp returns to Philadelphia

(5/19/2014) Phillies pitcher Shawn Camp has returned to the club on a minor-league deal.

Camp was with the club earlier this year, but was granted his release. After not finding any offers elsewhere, he chose to re-sign with Philadelphia. In 3 1/3 innings in the majors, he posted a 5.40 ERA.

The club sent Camp down to the minors Thursday, but he refused the assignment. Camp posted a 5.40 ERA in three games with the club.

(4/18/2014) The Phillies recalled reliever Shawn Camp from Triple-A Lehigh Valley Friday, after the bullpen was thinned out in a 12-1 loss to the Rockies. Camp was one of the final cuts in the spring.

Camp was a useful reliever as recently as two season ago, but posted an ugly 7.05 ERA in 26 appearances for the Cubs a year ago. Camp has a 3.00 ERA in six innings for Lehigh Valley this season.

(11/16/2013) The Phillies have signed outfielders Clete Thomas and Leandro Castro and pitchers Shawn Camp and Cesar Jimenez to minor-league deals.

Thomas hit .214/.290/.307 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 290 at-bats with the Twins in 2013. Castro hit .256/.280/.368 with eight home runs, 55 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 438 at-bats with Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season.

Camp made 26 appearanecs with the Cubs last season, going 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA, 1.87 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB ratio in 23 innings. Jimenez made 19 appearances with the Phillies in 2013, going 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 11:10 K:BB ratio in 17 innings.

(11/13/2013) According to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman, the Phillies signed reliever Shawn Camp to a minor league deal Wednesday.

Camp finished this season with the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate in Reno, but he previously made 26 appearances with the Cubs, compiling a 7.04 ERA.

(6/15/2013) The Cubs activated pitcher Shawn Camp from the disabled list Saturday, MLB.com reports. Camp, who was on the shelf with a toe injury, completed a rehab assignment with Class A Kane County. 

Camp has appeared in 20 games for the Cubs this season, his last coming May 21 at Pittsburgh. He's 1-1 with three blown saves and four holds. His ERA is at 7.56 with 12 Ks over 16 2/3 innings.

Camp allowed one hit and struck out one as he pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Cougars. The right-hander has been sidelined since May 21 with a toe injury. The Cubs have not given any details on how long he'll pitch in the minors before returning.

(5/22/2013) Cubs reliever Shawn Camp has been dealing with a sprained toe for nearly a month, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, but he did not disclose the injury to the team until Sunday, when he first received treatment for it. Camp did not respond well to the treatment, forcing him to be placed on the disabled list Wednesday.

Camp had a 7.56 ERA and three blown saves before the injury, and it appears as if he might require a lengthy stay on the DL. He has been told to stay off his foot until the pain and swelling subsides.

Sveum chooses closer based on matchup

(4/29/2013) Cubs manager Dale Sveum told MLB.com on Monday that he does not tell his relievers beforehand who will serve as closer before each game. He added that he goes by best the matchup to decide who to throw in the ninth inning.

“It’s been working,” Sveum said Monday. “I’m not going to say it’s a fix-all and that you don’t want to name a closer. You definitely don’t want to rock the boat when things are going good in the back of the bullpen when everybody is healthy and ready to go that night. It could be one of four guys. It depends on the matchups.”

Carlos Marmol, Kevin Gregg, Shawn Camp and James Russell are the "four guys" Sveum was referring to.

"Health-wise I'm fine," Camp told ESPNChicago.com. "I wouldn't be out there if I wasn't healthy."

Camp has surrendered eight earned runs on 11 hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings this season for a 15.43 ERA and 2.79 WHIP.

(4/14/2013) Cubs relief pitcher Shawn Camp could not hang on to a late lead, as he blew his first save and suffered his first loss of the season Sunday afternoon against the Giants.

Camp (0-1) entered the game in the ninth inning with a one-run advantage. He served up the game-tying home run to Hunter Pence before surrendering three more runs in the 10th inning. He was charged with four runs on five hits over 1 2/3 innings in a 10-7 defeat. The right-hander struck out two and did not issue a walk as he ERA grew to 12.46 after his abysmal outing.

(4/13/2013) With pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa on the disabled list with a forearm injury, Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he will use a closer-by-committee approach, leaning primarily on Shawn Camp and James Russell. Displaced closer Carlos Marmol is not expected to be involved.

"It'll probably come down to matchups and what happened earlier in the game," Sveum told MLB.com on Saturday.

Camp has been used in save situations sporadically throughout his career and had two saves with the Cubs last season. The right-hander has completed a full inning just once in four appearances this year.
