Gervacio might not pitch in camp


(2/20/2011) The Sports Xchange reports Astros RP Sammy Gervacio is making slow progress from offseason shoulder surgery. "I don't think we're going to see him throw down here," general manager Ed Wade said, referring to the entirety of camp. "At this point there's no sense to rushing him." Gervacio had one of the best springs on the team last year but was injured in April and never recovered.

(5/4/2010) Astros RP Sammy Gervacio, who hadn't pitched since Saturday because of a tender shoulder, returned Monday against the Diamondbacks and allowed one hit in one-third of an inning. The Astros then optioned him to Triple-A Round Rock.

(5/2/2010) Houston manager Brad Mills said RHP Samuel Gervacio, who left Saturday's game with a right shoulder strain, was "a little tender" on Sunday. Mills said Gervacio, who spent 17 days on the disabled list early in the season with a strained right shoulder, will be examined by team doctors Monday if he's unable to throw without pain. He did not pitch on Sunday and remains day to day for now.

(5/1/2010) Atlanta OF Jason Heyward led off the seventh inning Saturday with a homer to left-center off Houston reliever Sammy Gervacio. Gervacio left with a right shoulder strain after failing to retire any of the three batters he faced. He allowed three runs on a hit and two walks and did so over 16 pitches. His ERA is 13.50 on the year.

(4/28/2010) From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Sammy Gervacio took the mound for the Astros on Tuesday for the first time since returning from a shoulder injury. He showed a bit of rust, throwing 10 balls among his 18 pitches and allowing two walks, which led to a run in one inning.

(4/24/2010) The Astros have activated RP Sammy Gervacio from the disabled list, according to MLB.com. To make room for him on the roster, they optioned RP Wilton Lopez to Triple-A Round Rock. Gervacio was on a rehab assignment after suffering inflammation of his rotator cuff. In three rehab appearances, Gervacio allowed one run in three innings of work. He was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two relief appearances this season before he went on the DL.

(4/23/2010) According to MLB.com, Astros RP Sammy Gervacio, who is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock, will be activated from the disabled list on Sunday. Gervacio threw a scoreless inning on his rehab assignment on Wednesday then threw an additional 15 pitches in the bullpen after he completed his work. He was scheduled to throw again on Friday.

(4/20/2010) Astros RP Sammy Gervacio (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Monday. Gervacio entered the game in the seventh inning. He allowed a leadoff double to Brett Hayes, who eventually scored on a ground out. Gervacio would also hit a batter and issue an intentional walk before finishing off the inning with his only strikeout. He faced six hitters in an inning of work.

(4/16/2010) Astros RP Sammy Gervacio, suffering from inflammation of his rotator cuff, is scheduled to pitch a rehab outing Monday at Triple-A Round Rock. According to the Houston Chronicle,, Gervacio threw a bullpen session Friday at Wrigley Field and will pitch rehab assignments Monday and Wednesday in Round Rock.

(4/10/2010) An MRI exam on Astros RHP Sammy Gervacio's right shoulder revealed inflammation of the rotator cuff. He will begin treatment to deal with the inflammation and could be ready to return within 15 days. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list after Wednesday's game.

(4/8/2010) From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Sammy Gervacio, who enjoyed a splendid spring en route to making his first opening day roster, was placed on the 15-day DL after suffering a posterior cuff strain in his right shoulder in Wednesday's 10-4 loss to the Giants. He is eligible to return April 23. "I should be able to be ready before then," Gervacio told the Houston Chronicle.

(3/23/2010) The Sports Xchange reports Astros RP Sammy Gervacio's bid to win a spot on the club is off to a tremendous start. The nearly sidearming right-hander allowed one run and two hits in seven innings over his first six appearances. He credited time in the Dominican winter league and his short stint with the Astros last year for giving him some comfort, but he said, "It's the same spring training every year."

Astros sign five to split contracts


(2/11/2010) The Astros signed five players, including RP Alberto Arias, to one-year split contracts, according to The Sports Xchange. Arias made 42 relief appearances with Houston in 2009, finishing 2-1 with a 3.35 ERA and 39 strikeouts. Also signed were pitchers Sammy Gervacio and Polin Trinidad, as well as outfielders Brian Bogusevic and Yordany Ramirez.

(8/14/2009) Astros RP Chris Sampson allowed six earned runs on five hits in only 2/3 of an inning on Thursday. He was demoted by the Astros after the game and recalled RHP Sammy Gervacio. "I definitely didn't see it coming. I've been struggling as of late," Sampson said. "I haven't lost confidence in myself. They say they're sending me down to work through it and it seems to me like I am leading the team in appearances and innings pitched -- both categories. It seems to me like I may need more rest than more work."

(8/4/2009) The Houston Astros have recalled right-handed pitcher Felipe Paulino from the minor leagues so he can start Tuesday night's game against the San Francisco Giants. Paulino will start in place of Astros ace Roy Oswalt, who is still feeling pain from an irritated disk in his back. To make room on the roster Monday, Houston optioned right-hander Sammy Gervacio to Triple-A Round Rock.
