News: According to the Denver Post, the Rockies sent pitcher Drew Pomeranz to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday. They reinstated Josh Outman from the disabled list. Alex White and Christian Friedrich will remain in the rotation. Outman was on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique injury before being reinstated on Friday.
Analysis: The Rockies will likely use Outman as a long reliever out of the bullpen, but could use him as a spot starter if need. He went 8-8 with a 3.75 ERA in starting and relief duty for the Athletics over the last three seasons. Fantasy owners shouldn't pay too much attention to him though as he holds low-end appeal.
News: Colorado pitcher Josh Outman hit 97-mph on Thursday in his rehab outing for Double-A Tulsa. Outman, who is on the disabled list with a right oblique strain, threw 25 of his 36 pitches for strikes over his two innings of work. "I understand he was electric in the first inning and started to get a little bit tired toward the end of the second inning," manager Tracy told MLB.com. "The two hits were more of the seeing-eye variety." Outman will pitch again this weekend before being evaluated.
Analysis: Outman, 27, went 8-8 with a 3.75 ERA in starting and relief duty for the Athletics over the last three seasons. The Rockies will likely use Outman as a long reliever out of the 'pen once he's healthy. That doesn't give him much Fantasy value though, which means owners should continue to ignore him.
News: Rockies pitcher Josh Outman, who is rehabbing with Triple-A Colorado Springs for a right oblique strain, made an appearance in Monday's game against Sacramento. Outman earned a hold as he recorded a strikeout in a perfect inning.
Analysis: Outman is going to need to prove he can pitch on consecutive days before Colorado brings him back up. Outman would pitch in relief for the Rockies when activated and is just a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Denver Post reports Rockies pitcher Josh Outman, on the 15-day disabled list due to an oblique injury, threw 22 pitches over one inning of work at extended spring training on Tuesday. As long as he does not suffer a setback, Outman is expected to begin a rehab assignment Saturday.
Analysis: Outman is expected to be added to the bullpen once he recovers from his injury so owners should keep an eye on his status going forward. The left-hander has a career 3.75 ERA in 33 appearances (25 starts) and could end up seeing some spot starts in Colorado. Still, Outman has minimal appeal in Fantasy at this point so continue to ignore him in the majority of formats.
News: The Denver Post reports Rockies pitcher Josh Outman, on the 15-day disabled list, threw 30 pitches during a bullpen session on Monday. He also made a bullpen session last Friday as he continues to recover from a strained right oblique.
Analysis: Outman has a career .375 ERA in 33 appearances (25 starts) and was competing for a spot in the rotation before going down with the injury. It looks like he should be able to return in the near future but given his current role in Colorado, continue to ignore the left-hander in the majority of Fantasy formats.
News: According to MLB.com, Rockies reliever Josh Outman threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday. He's on the disabled list with a strained right oblique.
Analysis: Outman is steadily making progress for the Rockies, which is good news. Despite being a starter in the minors, Outman's new role is as a middle reliever. That doesn't leave him much Fantasy value. He can be ignored in all formats moving forward.
News: Rockies reliever Josh Outman, who is on the shelf with a right oblique strain he suffered vomiting battling food poisoning, was able to play catch from 120 feet on Wednesday, reports MLB.com. Outman will gradually rebuild to the point where he can throw from a mound.
Analysis: Outman won a spot in the Rockies bullpen before suffering a freak oblique injury because of vomiting dealing with a bout of food poisoning. Outman came up through the minors as a starter before having elbow problems. He could eventually return to the rotation, but since he's working in middle relief now, then Outman has marginal Fantasy appeal when healthy.
News: MLB.com reports Rockies pitcher Josh Outman (oblique) played catch from 90 feet on Saturday. Athletic trainer Keith Dugger said Outman is making progress, but he has yet to be scheduled for game action in extended spring.
News: As expected the Rockies placed pitcher Josh Outman on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday. The move is retroactive to March 30. Outman has been dealing with an oblique strain for a week.
Analysis: Outman was injured as a result of vomiting after he had food poisoning. He's expected to be a long reliever and spot starter for the Rockies this season. That doesn't give him much Fantasy value though, so even when healthy he's not worth owning in any format.
News: The Denver Post reports Rockies pitcher Josh Outman will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list due to an oblique injury that developed after his bout with food poisoning.
Analysis: Outman is expected to pitch out of the bullpen for the Rockies this season but is always a candidate to start. No word yet on how long he is will be out so keep an eye on his status going forward. Outman poses low-end Fantasy value as a starter and should be ignored in the majority of formats while he is on the DL.
News:The Denver Post reports Rockies reliever Josh Outman is battling food poisoning. Manager Jim Tracy said Alex White would be recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs if Outman isn't ready by Friday's season opener against Houston.
Analysis: Outman won a roster spot this spring. Unfortunately, it wasn't in the rotation. Outman will probably be a long reliever/spot starter for Colorado. However, he has minimal Fantasy appeal in his current role.
News: The Rockies have announced that pitcher Josh Outman has made the opening day roster, reports the Denver Post Saturday.
Analysis: Outman, who came over to the Rockies in the Seth Smith deal with Oakland, pitched to a 3.70 ERA over 58 1/3 innings last year. As a member of the Colorado bullpen, Outman will be just a low-end Fantasy option for leagues that care about relievers.
News: After giving up four runs his last time out, Rockies pitcher Josh Outman looked sharper in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Padres. He threw a scoreless inning, giving up just one hit while striking out two.
Analysis: Outman is competing for a spot in the rotation this spring and has allowed five runs through six innings pitched. He has a career 3.75 ERA in 33 appearances (25 starts) and would be worth a look in NL-only formats if able to crack the rotation in 2012.
News: Colorado pitcher Josh Outman didn't fare too well in his outing on Thursday. He was roughed up for four earned runs on six hits over three innings of work. He issued one walk and struck out one batter before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Outman entered the game in the fourth inning, taking over for Drew Pomeranz.
Analysis: Outman is one of the pitchers vying for a spot in the Rockies rotation, but this outing didn't help his cause any. The left-hander, who was acquired from Oakland during the offseason, appeared in 13 games last season (nine starts). Because he's a long shot to make the rotation, Fantasy owners in NL-only formats should view Outman as a late-round choice -- if he earns a spot.
News: Colorado starting pitcher Josh Outman scattered one run and two hits in two innings of work during the Rockies' 1-1 tie with Arizona in a Cactus League contest on Saturday afternoon. Outman relieved starter Drew Pomeranz in the third inning and notched a strikeout and walk.
Analysis: Outman is hoping to lock down a spot in the Colorado starting rotation, but he faces a bevy of challengers. The left-hander, who was acquired from Oakland during the offseason, appeared in 13 games last season and made nine starts. He displayed some issues with his command and registered a 1.46 WHIP in 58 1/3 innings. Fantasy owners should view him as a marginal option in deeper NL-only drafts if he wins a spot.
News: Rockies manager Jim Tracy said he has been impressed with left-hander Josh Outman, who was acquired in a trade with the A's in January. "There was some intrigue from what I saw over the course of three bullpen sessions, and it's very safe to say that ... I wasn't disappointed at all with what I saw [on Tuesday]," Tracy said. Outman is competing for a spot in the Rockies rotation. "We're going to play some games here very shortly, where there won't be just all Rockies shirts you'll see," Tracy said. "Then the opportunity to find out more. There'll be an umpire standing back there and the intrigue will become that much greater."
Analysis: Outman was a star prospect in the Phillies system before being traded to Oakland in 2008. He missed the 2010 season due to Tommy John surgery and just made it back to the diamond late last season. If he gets back to his pre-surgery level, then it's not hard to see why Tracy has been impressed .But it's a long spring and Outman has many more hurdles to clear. If he wins a rotation spot, consider him an NL-only Fantasy option initially.
News: The Oakland Athletics continued revamping their roster Monday, acquiring OF Seth Smith from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for SPs Josh Outman and Guillermo Moscoso, according to CBSSports.com. Outman was 3-5 with a 3.70 ERA in 13 games (nine starts) for Oakland last year.
Analysis: Colorado continues to stockpile arms and now has several pitchers competing for the fifth spot in the team's rotation, including Outman and Moscoso. The 27-year-old Outman returned from Tommy John surgery last season and notched 35 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings of work. If he doesn't land a starting role, he could be utilized out of the bullpen for the Rockies. Fantasy owners should not consider him a worthwhile option in 2012 drafts.
News: A's SP Josh Outman took his fifth loss of the season during Sunday's contest against the Rangers. Outman, who was making his ninth start of the season, allowed four runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in the 8-1 defeat. All four runs the left-hander surrendered came in the fifth inning, including a two-run home to Adrian Beltre. Outman was pulled after throwing 94 pitches and finished with three walks and two strikeouts while falling to 3-5 on the season.
Analysis: Outman was not very impressive in his spot start on Sunday. The left-hander was unable to get out of the fourth inning, which didn't do the bullpen any favors. However, Outman was only given the start in order to give some of Oakland's starters a rest and he will likely pitch out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season. Only owners in the deepest of AL-only formats that reward true middle men should continue and use Outman at this point in the season.
News: A's pitcher Josh Outman will start on Sunday against the Rangers in place of Rich Harden, according to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram. This move gives Harden an extra day of rest, which is what manager Bob Melvin planned on doing earlier in the week.
Analysis: Outman has gone 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA this year, but made just one appearance so far in September. The fact he's getting a spot start increases his Fantasy value, but not a lot. Continue to view him as a low-end AL-only option at this point.
News: The San Jose Mercury News reports Wednesday that A's manager Bob Melvin has had designs on wedging a spot starter into the weekend's rotation in Texas. While nothing is set in stone, Melvin indicated that Josh Outman could slot in front of either Brandon McCarthy or Rich Harden to give those guys some extra rest. McCarthy is scheduled to start on Friday and Harden on Sunday. That means it is possible that Outman slides in for any one of the weekend's games.
Analysis: Outman is certainly rested as he's made just one appearance in September, pitching a scoreless inning with one hit allowed against Seattle. Outman has made eight starts this season for the A's and has gone 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA. As a spot starter, he's liable to get just one outing and would be nothing but an AL-only Fantasy option. Plus, he may not make a start at all.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman (3-3) surrendered an unearned run and three hits in four innings during the Athletics' 4-0 loss to Boston in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday night. Outman replaced SP Graham Godfrey following an hour-long rain delay in the fifth inning, his first appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. He tallied a whopping seven strikeouts and a walk during the game.
Analysis: Outman made eight starts with the Athletics earlier this season, but will likely pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the year. The left-hander was stellar with his pitches Saturday and averaged nearly two strikeouts an inning. Outman, who had Tommy John surgery in 2009, struggled with his command in his first stint with Oakland and should be viewed as a low-end RP option in AL-only Fantasy formats.
News: The A's optioned relievers Jordan Norberto and Bruce Billings to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday and recalled left-handers Josh Outman and Jerry Blevins. Outman went 8-3 with a 3.91 ERA in 17 starts for the River Cats.
Analysis: Outman went 3-3 with a 3.47 ERA in eight starts for the A's earlier in the year but will likely serve as another bullpen arm down the stretch. He would hold minimal value in AL-only formats if he sees some starts but given his current role, continue to ignore the 26-year-old in the majority of Fantasy formats.
News: The A's optioned SP Josh Outman to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, making room for SP Brandon McCarthy (shoulder), who was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Outman made eight starts for Oakland, going 3-3 with a 3.47 ERA.
Analysis: Outman, who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, was surprisingly effective, posting six quality starts during his brief time in the rotation. His mediocre command limits his potential for shallower leagues, but should Outman return to the majors, he should be active in AL-only leagues. For now, though, he can be stashed in those formats.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman lost his second straight start on Saturday night as the A's fell to the Diamondbacks, 4-2. Willie Bloomquist and Kelly Johnson opened the game with back-to-back singles against Outman. He would allow four earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He struck out three and issued three walks.
Analysis: Outman is now 3-3 on the year with a 3.47 ERA. With Rich Harden off the disabled list, Outman is likely the odd man out of the rotation. If he isn't optioned he'll go into the bullpen, where he'll be used in long relief. Fantasy owners should view him as a low-end AL-only option at this point.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman (3-2) yielded three runs and eight hits in six innings during the Athletics' 3-1 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. Outman, who was outdueled by Phillies ace Roy Halladay (complete game), finished with four strikeouts and two walks. It's the second game in a row Outman has posted those strikeout and walk totals as his two-game winning streak was halted. The right-hander allowed three straight hits to begin the game as Philadelphia plated two runs in the first before he gave up another in the fifth.
Analysis: Outman, a former Phillies minor leaguer, was picked in the 10th round of the 2005 MLB Draft and traded to Oakland in 2008 as part of the deal for SP Joe Blanton. He entered Sunday's game having allowed just one run in his last two starts combined before quickly falling behind in the first against the National League East leaders. Outman, who owns a decent 3.10 ERA this season, should continue to stay in the rotation and his next projected start is Saturday against Arizona. He is 2-0 with a sparkling 1.38 ERA in two starts at home this year.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman turned in another solid performance during Tuesday night's contest against the Mets. Outman, who was making just his sixth start of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits over six innings, including a solo home run to Jason Bay in the sixth inning. Outman was finally pulled after throwing 98 pitches and finished with four strikeouts and two walks while improving to 3-1 on the season.
Analysis: Outman has now turned in two consecutive solid performances and seems to be settling into a bit of a groove of late. The left-hander missed last season following Tommy John surgery and spent the first six weeks of the season down in the minors. However, injuries gave him a chance to join the A's rotation and has thrived in the role. He will now look for his second win of Fantasy Week 12 (June 20-26) when he makes his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday at Philadelphia. Continue to view him as an AL-only option heading into his next start.
News: Oakland hadn't won a game at the Coliseum since May 29 and a starting pitcher hadn't won a game for the A's since SP Josh Outman did on May 28. Outman did it again for Oakland on Wednesday night as he threw seven scoreless innings versus Kansas City. He gave up four hits, issued two walks and struck out two before being replaced. The A's held on for the 2-1 win, giving Outman his second win of the year.
Analysis: Outman seems to be the only A's starter that remembers how to wins. He may be just 2-1 on the year, but he owns a respectable 3.14 ERA over his 28 2/3 innings this year. He should be in line for two starts in Fantasy Week 12 (June 20-26), which gives him a bit more value. He's slated to face the Mets on Tuesday and then the Phillies -- both games on the road. In three starts away from the Coliseum he is 0-1 with a 4.60 ERA. Fantasy owners should continue to view him as an AL-only option.
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports the A's have changed up the rotation for the upcoming Fantasy Week 11 (June 13-19). Oakland SP Josh Outman will be pushed back from his scheduled start on Tuesday against the Royals and will now pitch on Wednesday, with Trevor Cahill switching spots with him. Outman loses his status as a two-start hurler for the scoring period.
Analysis: Outman has made four starts for Oakland thus far and is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA. He's allowed seven runs in his last 8 2/3 innings, however, and only has Fantasy appeal in AL-only formats for Week 11 (June 13-19) now.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman had one bad inning on Wednesday and it was enough to cost him a losing decision in Baltimore. Outman gave up an RBI single to J.J. Hardy in the fifth inning before Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer as the Orioles scored all three runs off him in the fifth. That was all he would allow as he dropped to 1-1 on the season. Outman allowed the three runs on five hits and no walks over six frames, throwing 78 pitches along the way. He struck out four and his ERA is at 4.15.
Analysis: Outman was not sharp in his last start in Boston, but has otherwise been solid as a starter for the A's this year. That said, he's not expected to remain in the rotation for long as the A's have been devastated by injuries. For the time being, Outman is starting and his next outing comes in Week 11 (June 13-19) on Tuesday against the Royals. As a two-start hurler in the upcoming scoring period, Outman can be used in some deeper mixed Fantasy leagues.
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports on Monday that Athletics starter Guillermo Moscoso will start on Tuesday against the Orioles in Baltimore. There had been talk that Josh Outman could start Tuesday, with Moscoso going Wednesday. Instead, it will be Moscoso on Tuesday and Outman Wednesday as originally planned.
Analysis: Both Outman and Moscoso pitched in relief in the series in Boston and that had the A's maneuvering to find the rotation plan that works best. In the end, the A's decided Outman going Wednesday worked best. Outman has made two starts this year for the A's and is 1-0 with three runs allowed over 13 innings. With one start in Week 10 (June 6-12), Outman is just an AL-only Fantasy option.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman could move up to pitch on Tuesday at Baltimore after only throwing 60 pitches on Friday against Boston, reports the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday. Guillermo Moscoso is tentatively scheduled to pitch Tuesday, but could switch with Outman and go Wednesday instead.
Analysis: The 26-year-old Outman gave up four runs over 2 2/3 innings in Boston on Friday and that is why he could turn around and pitch on Tuesday, if needed. Of course, this is not set in stone and Outman could still go Wednesday in Week 10 (June 6-12). This should be monitored, however, because Outman would be more valuable in the upcoming scoring period if he goes Tuesday. He would become a two-start pitcher should that happen. Outman is just an AL-only Fantasy option with one start, however.
News: Despite being handed a 4-0 lead before he tossed his first pitch Friday against the Red Sox, Oakland SP Josh Outman couldn't hang onto the lead even for three innings. He gave up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, one in the second, and two more in the third before exiting with his team down 5-4. Outman never seemed to settle on the mound, giving up five hits to account for five runs in just 2 2/3 innings of work. He struck out two batters and walked one on the short 67-pitch outing. Fortunately for him, the game became a slugfest and he was left out of the decision.
Analysis: Outman gave up a total of three runs over his first two starts -- in 13 combined innings of work -- since being recalled from the minors May 23. He wasn't the same Friday against the Boston lineup, who contributed to his ERA increase from 2.08 to 4.02 in less than three innings of work. The lefty is now 1-1 on the year, because of a night where he just never got into a rhythm. Fantasy owners should be cautious in utilizing him even as a marginal AL-only option going forward. Outman's next start is scheduled for Wednesday at Baltimore. He defeated the Orioles just last week, giving up two runs on six hits over six innings on a 97-pitch effort.
News: Despite being sidelined with various elbow injuries and having Tommy John surgery in June 2009, Oakland SP Josh Outman (1-0) has displayed improvement during his stint in the Athletics' starting rotation this year. Outman, who took the place of SP Brandon McCarthy, made his first start May 23. He earned a no-decision against the Angels and has yielded just three runs in two starts overall for a 2.08 ERA. However, his command is still lacking and he's yielded eight walks. "Early in the year, my command was bad. I was getting hit around," Outman told The Oakland Tribune. "That's when I struggled most -- when I'd feel confident and still go out and get my butt handed to me."
Analysis: Outman is one of two pitchers on the Oakland roster to have successfully returned to the major leagues after having Tommy John surgery (Joey Devine). "We spent a lot of time together last year and we had our setbacks at the same time," Outman told The Oakland Tribune. "If I was out for five weeks, he was out for five weeks. It just seemed like it went that way." Outman has showed staying power and he could make a case for staying in the rotation when McCarthy and Tyson Ross return from the disabled list. His next projected start is Friday at Boston, and Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end SP option in AL-only formats.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman (1-0) scattered two runs and six hits in six innings during the Athletics' 4-2 victory over Baltimore on Saturday night. Outman, in his second start since returning to the majors for the first time in two years, fanned two batters and walked five. He has now issued eight walks during his two starts for an unimpressive 8:4 BB:K ratio in 13 innings. Despite the high walk total, Outman managed to capture his first major-league victory since June 8, 2009 against Minnesota. The left-hander missed all of the 2010 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Analysis: Outman has done a solid job filling in for Oakland's injury-depleted starting rotation and has yielded just three runs and 11 hits in his two outings. He notched only 56 strikes among his 97 pitches against the Orioles, and threw a first-pitch strike to 15 of the 28 batters he faced. Outman, 26, could help his cause to remain in the rotation when Brandon McCarthy and Tyson Ross return from the disabled list with another solid performance in his next start. He faces a tough challenge in his next scheduled outing -- at Boston on Friday. Consider him a risky SP option against the potent Red Sox lineup.
News: A's SP Josh Outman was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento for Monday's start against the Angels and pitched very well. He lasted seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with three walks. An RBI single by Bobby Abreu in the first inning was his only damage on the outing. Unfortunately for Outman, his counterpart Jered Weaver matched him pitch for pitch. Outman also struck out two in the no-decision.
Analysis: Outman pitched extremely well for his first start in the majors since 2009 and has made a solid return from Tommy John surgery. Fantasy owners that picked him up are certainly glad they did, and he could do even more damage with one more start scheduled for Week 8 (May 23-29). The 26-year-old could make a case to remain in the rotation once Brandon McCarthy and Tyson Ross return, so keep an eye in his progress going forward. He is scheduled to pitch again Saturday against the Orioles so consider Outman a viable option in deeper Fantasy formats for his upcoming outing.
News: The A's officially recalled LHP Josh Outman from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, as anticipated. Outman is the team's scheduled starter for Monday night's game at the Angels. He has gone 4-1 with a 4.78 ERA in eight starts with the River Cats.
Analysis: Over his MLB career, Outman has managed a solid 3.77 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 93 innings of work. This season in the minors, however, he is sporting that unattractive 4.78 ERA over eight starts. He will be little more than an AL-only stopgap measure and a risky two-start option for Week 8 (May 23-29).
News: A's manager Bob Geren said on Sunday that SP Josh Outman will be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to start Monday's series opener against the Angels. Outman went 4-1 with a 4.78 ERA in eight starts with the River Cats.
Analysis: Outman is a power lefty that has regained his velocity after missing the entire 2010 campaign due to Tommy John surgery. "The reports are he's gotten better the last couple of starts," Geren told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I haven't seen him much this year, but he threw 95 mph before he got hurt. He's had a long road to recovery, similar to (Joey) Devine." Outman posted a 3.48 ERA in 14 appearances (12 starts) for the A's in 2009 and lines up as a two-start option for Fantasy Week 8 (May 23-29). Fantasy owners in deeper formats might want to give the 26-year-old a look for the upcoming scoring period.
News: A's starter Tyson Ross had to be removed from Thursday's start against the Twins after just seven pitches. The team would later announce that he suffered a strained left oblique muscle. The severity of the injury has yet to be determined, but if a replacement option is needed then Josh Outman and Guillermo Moscoso seem like likely alternatives at Triple-A Sacramento.
Analysis: Outman is on the 40-man roster and has 16 MLB starts under his belt. Over his MLB career, he has managed a solid 3.77 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 93 innings of work. This season in the minors, however, he is sporting an unattractive 4.78 ERA over eight starts. He would be little more than an AL-only stopgap measure if he gets the call.
News: The Athletics optioned SP Josh Outman to the minor leagues on Sunday. Outman, who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, posted a 9.82 ERA in five appearances this spring. He allowed 12 earned runs on 23 hits in 11 innings. "I'm not sharp enough right now to warrant any starts here," he told MLB.com.
Analysis: Outman hasn't pitched in either the majors or minors since 2009, so his spring struggles aren't too surprising. He was a viable Fantasy option before getting hurt, though, compiling a 3.48 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 14 appearances, including 12 starts. If he gets a chance to start for the Athletics later this season, he'll be worth a look in AL-only leagues, but you can ignore him in Fantasy for now.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman tossed 3 1/3 innings and surrendered two earned runs on five hits in the Athletics' 18-1 loss to the White Sox in a Cactus League game on Friday. Outman struck out two and walked none as he lowered his ERA to 9.82 -- the first time it has been below 10.00 since March 2. He managed his longest outing of the spring against Chicago as he did not issue a walk for the first time in his last four games.
Analysis: With another sub-par performance Friday, Outman could be pitching himself out of the competition for Oakland's last remaining spot in the starting rotation. The left-hander has allowed at least two earned runs in his last four appearances this spring, including a pair of outings with four earned runs. One of his chief rivals for the No. 5 job, Bobby Cramer, was torched for eight runs in three innings. Still, Outman is facing a daunting task to earn the starting job and should not be viewed an option in 2011 Fantasy drafts.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman was tagged for four earned runs and seven hits in just three innings during the Athletics' 4-3 Cactus League loss to Milwaukee on Friday. Outman, who is a candidate for the remaining spot in Oakland's starting rotation, replaced Gabe DeHoyos in the fifth inning and allowed extra-base hits to two of the first four batters he faced. He surrendered runs in two of his three innings as his ERA spiked to an unimpressive 11.74 this spring.
Analysis: Outman could quickly become the first name chopped from the list of candidates for the remaining roster spot. The left-hander is faltering in his first spring training since having Tommy John surgery in 2009 and has given up 10 earned runs in his last three outings. Outman was also disappointing in the same game that one of his competitors for the starting job excelled -- Tyson Ross, who extended his scoreless streak to 9 2/3 innings this spring. Outman should not be considered an option in 2011 Fantasy drafts at this point.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while only lasting 1 1/3 innings in the Athletics' 7-6 Cactus League loss to San Diego on Sunday. Outman struck out just one batter and surrendered a pair of home runs in his third outing as his spring ERA ballooned to 11.57. The 26-year-old started strong and retired the first two batters of the game before unraveling. He allowed three straight hits, including a two-run homer by Padres 1B Jorge Cantu, and has now given up runs in the last three innings he's pitched.
Analysis: Outman is certainly not helping himself in his quest to secure the last spot in Oakland's starting rotation, especially in the same game his chief competition was pitching in. The left-hander, who had Tommy John surgery in 2009, has now yielded six earned runs and six walks this spring. Making matters worse, Bobby Cramer, the other candidate for the No. 5 spot, tossed three scoreless innings Sunday and allowed just one hit. Outman could be running out of time to impress the Athletics staff and was not going to be worthwhile Fantasy option anyway. He should not be selected in 2011 drafts.
News: A's SP Josh Outman, who is competing for the final spot in Oakland's rotation, returned to the hill Wednesday after making his spring debut Sunday. Outman followed Bobby Cramer, who threw two shutout innings in his attempt to make the rotation. Outman didn't fare as well, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings. "My arm is feeling better, and it bounced back well from the last time out," Outman said. "It's just still that command at game speed. It's just one of those things I feel will come with time. I feel like I'm as close to throwing at 100 percent exertion as I can be. It's just going to take a little time to get the command back. I know I felt better than the last time out, and that's really all that matters to me."
Analysis: Outman, who has a 5.40 ERA after his first two outings, is attempting to make the rotation after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery for a year and a half. Unless he really improves in the next few weeks, it seems as though Outman is likely ticketed for the minors to stretch out his arm after missing so much time. Outman still has a lot of potential, but he will merely be an AL-only Fantasy option if he somehow makes the rotation.
News: A's SP Josh Outman, who missed all of 2010 due to Tommy John surgery, made his spring debut on Sunday against the Cubs. The left-hander surrendered three hits in his two innings of work but did not allow a run. "I was a little nervous," Outman told MLB.com. "That was my first time out there in a year and a half facing major league hitters, and some good ones at that. Command wasn't where I wanted it to be, but I felt good, and I can build on that for next time."
Analysis: Outman is battling for the No. 5 spot in Oakland's rotation, as looks well on his way with what he has done in camp thus far. He is still recovering from his surgery but he should get stronger as the spring goes on. The 26-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 20 appearances (16 starts) in his major-league career, and would be worth a look in AL-only formats if able to get back to that level.
News: A's SP Josh Outman pitched in an intrasquad outing on Thursday and allowed just one hit in the 20-pitch affair. The left-hander hadn't pitched since undergoing Tommy John surgery in June of 2009. "After everything he's been through, it's good to see him do that," A's manager Bob Geren told MLB.com. "His velocity was pretty good, and he had a pretty good changeup." Outman hit 92 on the radar gun and threw with about 90 percent exertion level, still trying to get back to 100 percent. "I'm still trying to feel comfortable letting it all go," he said. "I'm pitching without pain, but there's still a little bit of hesitation to throw 100 percent. Finishing pitches, that's something I'm slowly getting used to again."
Analysis: Outman is battling for the No. 5 spot in Oakland's rotation, as looks well on his way with his outing on Thursday. He still isn't all the way back from his injury just yet so Fantasy owners should continue to monitor his progress throughout the spring. The 26-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 20 appearances (16 starts) in his major-league career, and would be worth a look in AL-only formats if able to get back to that level.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman threw his second bullpen session of spring training Friday and remains a candidate for the Athletics' fifth starter spot in the rotation. Outman did not pitch last spring after recovering from Tommy John surgery in June 2009. "It felt really good to be back part of the team, going through the drills," Outman told the San Jose Mercury News. "As much as we grumble about spring training, I sat here last year and watched everybody out there. It was aggravating." The 26-year-old tallied a 4-1 record in 12 starts at the beginning of the 2009 season before leaving a June start against San Diego with elbow pain. He had surgery soon after and was unable to pitch at all in 2010.
Analysis: Outman, who was acquired from Philadelphia as part of a package in exchange for SP Joe Blanton, has a strong chance to join the end of a talented Athletics rotation. The left-hander's main competition for the last spot, SP Rich Harden, is sidelined with an injury and providing Outman a golden opportunity. "I worked hard in the offseason to show I'm healthy enough to handle the workload," he told the Mercury News. "I still haven't been in a game and cut it loose." Fantasy owners should keep an eye on Outman's progress in Cactus League games, but remember he has not reached 70 innings in a major-league season. Consider him an option in AL-only Fantasy formats.
News:The Sports Xchange reports A's SP Josh Outman is considered the dark-horse candidate for the fifth-starter spot, even after the team signed free agents Brandon McCarthy and Rich Harden. Outman, who had Tommy John surgery two seasons ago, pitched in the instructional league this fall, and before he was hurt in 2009, he was 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA
Analysis: Outman's unorthodox delivery is probably the reason he has had arm troubles, but before his elbow injury he could really make the glove pop. Pitchers often have success after having Tommy John, so there is hope Outman can return to his pre-surgery form. Outman is an intriguing Fantasy sleeper in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues on Draft Day, if he ends up in the A's rotation.
News: Athletics SP Josh Outman, who has already been ruled out for the season because of Tommy John surgery, threw two innings in an instructional league game Monday. Manager Bob Geren told MLB.com his pitches looked "outstanding" and that he averaged 91 miles per hour on his fastball.
Analysis: Outman had a 3.48 ERA in 14 appearances, including 12 starts, before getting injured in 2009. He has limited upside, but if he wins a rotation spot out of spring training, he'll have some sleeper appeal in AL-only leagues.
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Josh Outman, who is on a similar recovery schedule from "Tommy John" surgery as RHP Joey Devine, is not going to go out on a rehab assignment, but he is likely to get in work in instructional league play. Outman, like Devine, has had several setbacks since his 2009 surgery.
Analysis: Outman needs to prove healthy enough to compete for a spot in spring 2011. You have to figure that will be as a reliever anyway. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Injured A's pitchers Josh Outman and Joey Devine were in town on Friday to do some throwing after spending the year in Arizona rehabilitating from reconstructive Tommy John elbow surgery. Both are scheduled to pitch simulated games Saturday.
Analysis: Outman will be nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men, if he can return before the end of the season. He might compete for a rotation spot next spring, though. There is no reason to own him in Fantasy.
News: A's RP Josh Outman, who underwent Tommy John surgery last summer, will return to Oakland to continue to rehab, reports MLB.com. He will throw batting practice and in a handful of simulated to other September callups. Despite Outman's recent progress A's pitching coach Ron Romanick said there is still no timetable for his return. "We have to go week to week with them," Romanick said Sunday. "I know it's a competitive thing, an alpha male thing, but we're looking at the end result. They're ready when they're ready. I've told them, there is no such thing as a perfect rehab process."
Analysis: Outman is hoping to pitch for the A's sometime in September. However, there is still no timetable for his return. He even he is able to pitch this season, Outman will be nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men. He might compete for a rotation spot next spring, though.
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: LHP Josh Outman, who had Tommy John surgery last summer, told the San Francisco Chronicle he is throwing at 140 feet and he has reported to the team's minor-league complex in Phoenix. Outman, like reliever Joey Devine, was shut down from rehab after several setbacks earlier this season, but like Devine, Outman is still hoping to pitch for Oakland in September.
Analysis: Outman will be nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men, if he can return before the end of the season. He might compete for a rotation spot next spring, though.
News: According to MLB.com, Athletics SP Josh Outman will visit renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews after experiencing flexor tendon soreness in his surgically repaired left elbow a couple weeks ago. Outman is recovering from Tommy John surgery, which Andrews performed last June.
Analysis: Outman was progressing with his rehab work before this setback. Now, the Athletics plan to shut him down for a while, casting doubt over his status for the rest of the season. Recovery from Tommy John surgery can sometimes take closer to 18 months than 12 months, so this isn't the biggest surprise in the world. Still, AL-only owners would like to see Outman return before the end of the season because he has enough talent to make an impact in deeper formats.
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that A's SP Josh Outman (elbow) has been shut down in extended spring training.
Analysis: Outman was having issues with some soreness earlier this month, and this is clearly a setback for the 25-year-old. Hopefully it's nothing major, but you have to be concerned about a guy being shut down after surgery. Continue to follow Outman's progress in super-deep AL-only leagues.
News: A's SP Josh Outman (Tommy John surgery) said on Monday that he has had had some flexor tendon discomfort lately, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. His teammate Joey Devine, who also underwent Tommy John surgery, experienced the same same discomfort about a month and a half ago and had platelet-rich plasma injections which he believed helped with the soreness.
Analysis: Outman has a 3.77 ERA in 20 career appearances. He will likely be out until at least of the second half of the season and is not worth stashing away expect in AL-only formats at this point.
News: According to the San Francisco Chronicle, A's pitcher Josh Outman (elbow) will throw a simulated game in Arizona on Saturday. He will have INF Mark Ellis stand at the plate without swinging at any pitches.
Analysis: Well that seems like a boring afternoon for Ellis, but it is good news for Outman. He is on the 60-day disabled list, however, and is out until the second half of the season. Stash him only in deep AL-only leagues.
News: The A's moved pitcher Josh Outman (Tommy John surgery last June) to the 60-day DL to open up a spot on the team's 40-man roster Thursday.
Analysis: Outman is hoping to return in the second half, but he is nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of AL-only leagues if he proves healthy and effective enough to re-earn a rotation spot. Stash him only in the deepest of those formats.
News: The A's placed hurler Josh Outman on the 15-day DL as he recovers from left elbow surgery on Saturday.
Analysis: Outman, who went 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 14 appearances during the 2009 season, is still focusing on a midseason return. He would have some value if he can return and prove effective. Still, that value would only be in AL-only leagues.
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that A's SP Josh Outman, who is recovering from Tommy John, was shut down for six weeks recently because of shoulder problems. He is back throwing again, however.
Analysis: Outman, who went 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 14 appearances during the 2009 season, is still focusing on a midseason return, despite this setback. He remains just a long-term Fantasy keeper.
News: A's SP Josh Outman isn't expected to return to the team until the All-Star break following elbow ligament replacement surgery last June.
Analysis: Outman went 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 14 appearances during the 2009 season, including 12 starts. He was starting to come into his own as a major leaguer but is now expected to be out until the middle of 2010. He remains just a long-term Fantasy keeper.
News: Oakland Athletics left-hander Josh Outman has undergone ligament replacement surgery on his pitching elbow, ending his season. Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure, often called Tommy John surgery. The surgery typically requires a year or more of rehabilitation.
Analysis: Outman went 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA this season in 14 appearances, including 12 starts. Outman also had a bone spur removed. It's a real shame too since Outman was starting to come into his own as a major leaguer. He is now likely out until the middle of 2010. He remains just a long-term Fantasy keeper. Cut him in all seasonal formats.
News: Athletics rookie left-hander Josh Outman will have surgery on his pitching elbow Tuesday. The Athletics didn't immediately announce the severity of the surgery or a timetable for Outman's return. Outman visited with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday. Outman was transferred to the 60-day disabled list a day earlier, signaling the club expects a lengthy recovery period.
Analysis: Outman was a bright spot for the last-place A's this season, going 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA. He left his last start in San Diego on June 19 in the second inning with what the team called a sprained elbow. It was rumored he needed ligament replacement surgery and will be out through the middle of 2010. The surgery news isn't official until he goes under the knife, though.
News:Josh Outman (elbow) was moved to the 60-day DL on Sunday and reportedly will need season-ending Tommy John surgery, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Analysis: Outman will miss the rest of this season and at least half of next. Cut and ignore him in all leagues, unless you have unlimited DL spots. The surgery news isn't official until he goes under the knife.
News: The Oakland Athletics reinstated infielder Mark Ellis from the disabled list before Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies. The A's optioned first baseman Daric Barton to Sacramento to clear a spot on the roster. The A's also transferred Josh Outman to the 60-day DL, making room for Ellis on the 40-man roster.
Analysis: Outman had developed into a reliable Fantasy starter for the A's but will now likely be out until August. Consider him a DL stashee in deeper formats if you have ample space. The fact he is a rookie starter -- and a perplexing elbow injury -- you are justified cutting him for another flier in mixed formats.
News: Athletics rookie pitcher Josh Outman has been put on the disabled list because of a sprained left elbow. Outman had an MRI exam Monday and had been scheduled for a more extensive test Wednesday. He left his start last Friday at San Diego after 1 2/3 innings. The move to put the 24-year-old Outman on the DL is retroactive to Saturday. He is 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 14 games this season. Oakland recalled lefty Gio Gonzalez from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday to start the series finale against the Giants.
Analysis: Outman likely will be out until late July at this point. It is too bad, too, because he had developed into a reliable Fantasy starter. Consider him a DL stashee in deeper formats if you have ample space. The fact he is a rookie starter -- and a perplexing elbow injury -- you are justified cutting him for another flier in mixed formats.
News: Rookie left-hander Josh Outman will miss his start Wednesday for the Oakland Athletics with tightness in his throwing arm. Outman underwent an MRI on Monday on his elbow area and is scheduled for another more extensive test Wednesday. The A's had hoped he would be examined Tuesday but there wasn't an appointment available. A's manager Bob Geren said he would wait until after Tuesday's game against the San Francisco Giants to name a starter for Wednesday, but was deciding between reliever Edgar Gonzalez or bringing up Gio Gonzalez from Triple-A Sacramento.
Analysis: The 24-year-old Outman is 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 14 appearances and 12 starts this season. He doesn't have ace potential, but he's been a useful Fantasy option this year, offering a respectable WHIP. Keep him reserved until we know more about this injury.
News: Rookie A's pitcher Josh Outman had an MRI exam on his injured left elbow area and will have a more extensive test Tuesday. He left Friday night's game against the San Diego Padres in the second inning with tightness in his pitching arm.
Analysis: A contrast MRI, which involves a dye injection, restricts throwing for three days, but Outman was hopeful that he would not need one of those and would be able to make his Wednesday start against the Giants. He doesn't have ace potential, but he's been a useful Fantasy option this year, offering a respectable WHIP. Keep him reserved until we know more about this injury.
News: From The Sports Xchange: LHP Josh Outman will get an MRI on Monday for the mild flexor-extensor strain in his left elbow. Outman left Friday's start in the second inning because the injury was making him throw tentatively, he told reporters. A contrast MRI, which involves a dye injection, restricts throwing for three days, but Outman was hopeful that he would not need one of those and would be able to make his Wednesday start against the Giants.
Analysis: Outman has been a nice sleeper in deeper leagues, but he is too risky to trust in Fantasy Week 12 (June 22-28). You are better off finding a healthier option this week.
News: A's rookie pitcher Josh Outman left Friday night's game against the San Diego Padres in the second inning with an undisclosed injury. Outman allowed a leadoff homer to Chase Headley in the second inning and was then visited on the mound by manager Bob Geren and head trainer Steve Sayles. After about a short discussion, Outman remained in the game. He allowed Eliezer Alfonzo's one-out single and pitcher Wade LeBlanc sacrificed him to second. Geren and Sayles then revisited the mound and Outman was removed from the game. He was replaced by Edgar Gonzalez.
Analysis: Outman is having a stellar rookie campaign with the Athletics and is currently owned in 70 percent of leagues. There should be more on this injury soon, so be sure to track his status through the weekend before making a decision on him for Fantasy Week 12 (June 22-28). His next start is scheduled for Wednesday against the Giants' Randy Johnson.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman took his first loss of the season on Saturday against the Giants 5-2. He allowed four earned runs on five hits in the game, striking out four and walking none, allowing one homer. His ERA on the season jumped up to 3.43.
Analysis: It took Outman 10 starts to finally take a loss. He was cruising along until the seventh inning after allowing two runs in the first. He's allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last four starts, which haven't been as impressive as most of his starts to open the 2009 campaign. He is still a Fantasy SP worth using in deeper mixed leagues. His next start is scheduled for Friday at San Diego against Chris R. Young.
News: Oakland starter Josh Outman left Mondays game against the Twins with a 4-3 lead after six relatively strong innings of work. Outman pitched scoreless frames in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings against the Twinkies but allowed all three runs to score against him in the fourth. He allowed three runs total on four hits in the win and improved his season record to 4-0 with a 3.17 ERA.
Analysis: Outman hasnt lost yet this season with nine starts on his record. Hes been fantastic for Oakland as hes allowed fewer than three runs to cross the plate in every single appearance hes made. Hes now won consecutive outings and his four wins have all come in his last six starts. The As are beginning to give him some support and he can start being used in deeper mixed Fantasy leagues everywhere. His next start comes Saturday at San Francisco against 300-game winner Randy Johnson.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman (3-0) earned the win on Wednesday against the White Sox, allowing seven hits and three runs -- two earned -- over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out two in the contest and walked only one. Both of the earned runs against him came on a Jermaine Dye homer.
Analysis: Outman had made nine starts this season and all three of his results are victories. He has put together five quality starts in a row and hasn't allowed more than three runs in an appearance so far this season. He is looking like a Fantasy SP worth taking a look at in all AL-only formats and even some deeper mixed leagues. He is slated to be a two-start pitcher in Fantasy Week 10 (June 8-14) with starts against the Twins and at San Francisco.
News: Oakland got another strong performance on Friday against the Rangers from rookie SP Josh Outman, who struck out a career-high nine and allowed three runs and three hits in 6 2/3 innings. He took a no decision in Game 1 of a doubleheader, with the Rangers winning the contest 6-3.
Analysis: Outman has given up five earned runs and 13 hits in his last 26 1/3 innings over four starts. Outman has been a nice addition to the Athletics rotation, posting a 2-0 record in his four starts. He is worth using in AL-only formats and could get some attention in mixed leagues if he keeps pitching like this. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday at the White Sox against Clayton Richard.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman was nearly flawless over six innings on Tuesday and still did not secure a victory as the A's won the game in 11 innings. Outman was no decisioned as he gave up just three hits and no runs. He walked one and had six strikeouts. His ERA is 3.31 on the year.
Analysis: Outman (1-0) has been fantastic in his last two starts as he's allowed one earned run on six hits in 12 innings of work with 10 K's. His lack of going deep in games keeps him mostly an AL-option but if he can harness that he'll definitely find greater value. He pitches again during this scoring period on Sunday against Arizona.
News: Athletics SP Josh Outman won his first game on the season on Wednesday, beating the Royals 7-2. Outman (1-0) allowed just three hits and a run in six innings. He walked two while striking out four to get his first win in five starts and help Oakland sweep the two-game series with the Royals. Outman was stellar in his best outing of the season. The right-hander retired the side in order in four of the six innings he pitched and allowed only Miguel Olivo's RBI-single in the second before giving way to the bullpen.
Analysis: Outman has made five starts this season but this was the first time that he earned a decision. He has only deep enough to be eligible for a win twice as he has failed to get out of the fifth inning in three of his starts. He remains merely an AL-only option but is scheduled to be a two-start pitcher in Fantasy week 7 (May 18-24) with starts at Tampa Bay and against Arizona.
News: Athletics SP Josh Outman, who was coming off his best start of the season, had another poor outing Friday against the Blue Jays. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings, striking out five. He left with the lead but couldn't pitch long enough to secure a victory.
Analysis: Outman hasn't been able to pitch deep into games, which is something that will have to end if he hopes to keep his spot in the rotation. The Athletics organization is deep in arms, so they won't hesitate to pull the plug on Outman if necessary. Leave him for the deepest of AL-only leagues. His next start is scheduled for Friday at Detroit.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman pitched fairly well on Sunday against the Mariners but the game went into extra innings and Outman was saddled with a no decision. Outman allowed two earned runs on four hits over six innings. He walked one and had five K's. Outman was burned by Mike Sweeney's two-run home run in the 4th inning. His ERA is now 4.41 on the season for the A's.
Analysis: Outman has yet to receive a decision after three starts this season. He's also pitched out of the bullpen for the A's. Sunday was by far his best performance, however, as he was limited to 4 1/3 innings in his previous longest outing. Outman is an up-and-coming youngster for the A's but still cannot be trusted in anything but keeper and AL-only leagues. Outman is scheduled to pitch on Friday against Toronto and Scott Richmond.
News: A rainout gave the short-handed Oakland Athletics a well-timed night off. Wednesday's game between Oakland and the Texas Rangers was postponed after a one-hour rain delay and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 29. Geren said left-hander Dallas Braden will start Thursday's series finale as had been scheduled. Left-hander Josh Outman, Wednesday night's scheduled starter, will be pushed back to Sunday against Seattle.
Analysis: This is the second time Outman has been switched around due to rain. The A's youngster is 0-0 this season with a 5.23 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. He has yet to go more than 4 1/3 innings in a start this season, so you shouldn't have much optimism for his next outing. Leave him for desperate AL-only Fantasy owners.
News: Athletics manager Bob Geren shuffled his rotation Tuesday, moving SP Trevor Cahill from Wednesday to Saturday and SP Josh Outman, who had been in the bullpen, from Saturday to Wednesday.
Analysis: The Athletics originally planned to skip Outman's start because of a rainout, but they obviously decided they didn't want him to go too long between starts. He has yet to go more than 4 1/3 innings in a start this season, so you shouldn't have much optimism for his start at Texas. Leave him for desperate AL-only Fantasy owners.
News: From the The Sports Xchange: LHP Josh Outman's next scheduled start will be skipped because of Monday's rainout and A's off days Thursday and next Monday. Outman, who worked on Friday at Toronto, will not start again until May 2 at Seattle. He is available in the bullpen, and he has experience pitching in relief in both the majors and the minors.
Analysis: Outman is nothing more than a risky option for the deepest of AL-only leagues at this point. Consider him high risk as a one-starter coming off a skipping in Fantasy Week 4 (April 27-May 3).
News: Monday's rain out against the Yankees seems to have cost A's SP Josh Outman his next scheduled start. Outman was expected to take the hill Friday against the Rays, but now Trevor Cahill is penciled in to start. Outman took the hill in relief Tuesday against New York, tossing a scoreless eighth during a 5-3 loss. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
Analysis: The A's have yet to announce Outman's next start, but the team is also still waiting to name a starter for Sunday against the Rays. With the way starter Dana Eveland struggled Tuesday, Outman might hop back into the rotation Sunday. Still, we have to wait until the A's announce the move. Outman is a promising youngster that can make the glove pop, but remains more of an AL-only Fantasy SP at this time.
News: Afternoon showers and a forecast for more rain in the evening caused the Yankees to call Monday night's game against the Athletics. No makeup date was announced, but in addition to the remainder of this week's series Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon, the A's return for another three-game set from July 24-26. With both teams off July 23, it could be made up then or as part of a day-night doubleheader later in the series. New York's Andy Pettitte and Oakland's Dana Eveland, who had been set back to start the opener, were pushed back to Tuesday. The A's said Brett Anderson would start Wednesday. Dallas Braden and Trevor Cahill are certain to get starts this week, but Josh Outman is a candidate to be skipped now.
Analysis: All of the A's starters are more sleepers than trustworthy options at this point. Cahill is perhaps the best pitcher, while Anderson could make up ground long term. Eveland, Braden and Outman are riskier options best left for AL-only formats.
News: A's SP Josh Outman allowed five hits and five runs (three earned) in four innings during a no decision Friday against the Blue Jays. Outman lost a 1-0 lead in the first as Marco Scutaro parked the second pitch he saw into the left field seats. Outman then allowed Toronto to take a 3-1 lead in the third on a two-run homer by Aaron Hill. Oakland added two more runs in the third on Ryan Sweeney's fielding error. Outman was then off the hook after Oakland tied the game in the fourth. He walked four and struck out five.
Analysis: Outman has yet to make it five innings in his first two starts and is definitely showing his inexperience on the mound. The lefty has a strong fastball, but still needs to work on his control and other pitches. He has potential, but is best left for AL-only Fantasy leagues. His next scheduled start is for Wednesday against the Yankees.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman lasted 4 1/3 innings, yielding three runs on six hits against the Mariners on Saturday. He walked two and struck out three and earned a no decision in the game. Outman has a season ERA of 6.23 after his first start of the year.
Analysis: Outman wasn't fantastic this spring and started the regular season the same way. Still, the A's like his stuff and his command and he'll continue to get starts. Outman probably is only worth using in AL-only leagues for the time being as he makes his next scheduled appearance on Friday at Toronto.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that A's SP Josh Outman pitched in an intrasquad game in the A's minor league complex in Phoenix on Sunday in order to prepare to start Oakland's home opener on Friday. According to pitching coach Curt Young, Outman threw 95 pitches in seven innings and struck out 10 while allowing "four or five" hits.
Analysis: Outman had a 5.40 ERA over the spring and the team felt his command was solid. He's previously made just four big-league starts, however, so there will be some jitters as he takes the mound against the Mariners. Outman probably is only worth using in AL-only leagues for the time being.
News:The Sports Xchange notes that A's LHP Josh Outman, who claimed the final spot in the rotation, will pitch in Oakland's home opener on Friday.
Analysis: Outman had a 5.40 ERA over the spring and the team felt his command was solid. He's previously made just four big-league starts, however, so there will be some jitters as he takes the mound against the Mariners. Outman probably is only worth using in AL-only leagues for the time being.
News: A's manager Bob Geren finally announced the team's rotation after Wednesday's game against the Cubs. Dallas Braden, who gave up six runs in five innings, will be the opening day starter, as expected. He'll be followed by Trevor Cahill, Dana Eveland, Brett Anderson and Josh Outman. Sean Gallagher, who began the season penciled into the No. 2 spot, is now "competing for a bullpen spot," Geren said. "What I'm looking for from him this spring was to attack the strike zone a little better," Geren said. "I'm looking for his stuff to be a little crisper."
Analysis: Outman has had a mostly impressive spring, though he might end up losing his job once Justin Duchscherer returns from elbow surgery. He doesn't have the upside of a Cahill or an Anderson, but he has enough to deserve a look in AL-only leagues right now.
News:Josh Outman, who would seem to be No. 6 in the on the Athletics depth chart at the starting pitcher position, turned in one of his best performances of the spring on Tuesday against the Royals. Outman gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings, facing the same Royals team that pounded him for eight runs in 3 1/3 innings last week. "He threw the ball really well," Oakland manager Bob Geren said. "He pounded the strike zone and was very aggressive."
Analysis: The A's have six pitchers in camp pitching for five spots in the rotation now that Justin Duchscherer is going to be out at least six weeks after having elbow surgery. However, Outman may be the odd man out so he is only worth taking a look at in deep AL-only leagues.
News: Oakland SP Josh Outman lasted 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday night against the Royals and was beaten up pretty badly. Mike Aviles connected on a grand slam against him in the first and things never really got any better. Outman finished having allowed eight hits and eight runs with two walks and two strikeouts. His ERA is 6.19 on the spring.
Analysis: Outman was having a very impressive spring before Tuesday's massacre against the Royals. The rookie doesn't have as much upside as some of Oakland's other young arms but he was definitely leading for a spot in the A's rotation out of spring training. Hopefully this outing didn't hurt his chances. He deserves a look in deeper AL-only leagues.
News: Athletics SP Josh Outman, in contention for a rotation spot, threw four scoreless innings against the Rangers on Thursday. He allowed three hits and recorded three strikeouts. He now has a 2.13 ERA in 12 2/3 innings this spring.
Analysis: Outman has had an impressive enough spring to make him a favorite for a rotation spot. The rookie doesn't have as much upside as some of Oakland's other young arms, but he deserves a look in deeper AL-only leagues.
News: Athletics SP Josh Outman, competing for a rotation spot this spring, didn't look as good at the Diamondbacks on Sunday as he did against the Brewers last week. He allowed four runs -- two earned -- on four hits in two innings of work, walking two and striking out two. He has worked to shorten his delivery this spring.
Analysis: Outman is one of several prospects competing for a rotation spot this spring, but he doesn't have quite the upside of someone like Gio Gonzalez. We think he'll probably open the season in the minor leagues, but he at least deserves a flier in AL-only leagues.
News: Athletics SP Josh Outman, competing for a spot in the rotation this spring, pitched two scoreless innings in Wednesday's exhibition game at Milwaukee, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout. Manager Bob Geren has said Outman has worked to shorten his delivery in camp.

News: Athletics LHP Josh Outman and Gio Gonzalez will throw two innings each when the A's open their Catcus League schedule Wednesday against the Brewers. Manager Bob Geren said they have each worked on a few small things and this will be his first chance to see how they respond in a game. "Outman shortened up the back swing of his delivery a tad," Geren said. "We felt his command would be a little bit better." Geren said if neither pitcher earned a spot in the starting rotation, they would be candidates for the bullpen.

News: Athletics SP Josh Outman, who was making his fourth major-league start, allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits Sunday at Seattle, walking one and striking out five. He suffered the loss, falling to 1-2.
Analysis: Outman has long-term potential, but he likely needs to open spring 2009 back in Triple-A. Consider him nothing more than a sleeper in AL-only leagues.
News: A's SP Josh Outman allowed too many hits on Tuesday against the Rangers. He didn't factor into the decision as Texas won 6-4. He allowed three runs on 10 hits over six innings. He walked two and had four strikeouts.
Analysis: Outman will make one more start on the year and that will go a long way in determining his status with the A's for 2009. He shouldn't have been starting in anything but AL-only leagues over this week, though. His next scheduled start comes Sunday at Seattle.
News: A's SP Josh Outman, making just his fourth start, earned his first loss of the season on Thursday against the Angels. Outman allowed three runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and had four K's.
Analysis: Outman won his last start against Texas but didn't look as good on Thursday. With the season winding down to a close and only one more Fantasy week to go, Outman doesn't look like a viable option as a one-start pitcher. His next scheduled start comes Tuesday at Texas.
News: A's SP Josh Outman earned his first major league victory as the Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 7-1 Saturday. Outman (1-0) allowed one run and four hits over five innings in his first big league start. The rookie lefty had made two appearances out of the bullpen since being called up from Triple-A this month. Outman allowed an RBI double to Nelson Cruz in the second inning, but only one other runner to reach second base. He struck out three and got some help from the A's defense, which turned a pair of double plays.
Analysis: Outman certainly impressed on Saturday. Is that enough to warrant picking him up and starting him in Fantasy? Obviously, that is going to depend on how desperate for pitching you are, but the Rangers can hit so this wasn't just a case of playing a bad team. His next scheduled start comes Friday against Seattle. The Mariners are a poor team and that makes Outman a Fantasy sleeper for deeper mixed leagues in Fantasy Week 25 (Sept. 15-21).
News: The A's recalled LHP Dan Meyer from Double-A Midland and selected the contract of LHP Josh Outman from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. According to The Sports Xchange notes: Outman, 23, throws in the mid-90s with consistency, and he hit as high as 97 mph at Sacramento. He is expected to work in relief with Oakland, but he could be considered for a spot in the rotation at some point next season. He made his debut Tuesday, working two scoreless innings and giving up two hits while striking out two.
Analysis: Outman has long-term potential, but he likely needs to open spring 2009 back in Triple-A. Consider him nothing more than a spot starter or low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues that use true middle men down the stretch.
News: The Athletics dealt burly SP Joe Blanton to the Phillies for three minor leaguers on Thursday. "Philadelphia was aggressive," Oakland assistant GM David Forst said. "They made it clear they needed a starting pitcher to help out and we were able to get the deal done." The minor leaguers involved are left-hander Josh Outman, who was in Double-A, second baseman Adrian Cardenas and outfielder Matt Spencer, both players in Class A.
Analysis: Outman has the best chance of making an impact soon, but he's worked mostly in relief this year, compiling a 5-4 record with a 3.20 ERA and one save in 33 games, including five starts, for Double-A Reading. Cardenas batted .309 with six triples and 16 stolen bases in 67 games for Class A Clearwater and ranked seventh in the Florida State League in batting average. Spencer hit .249 with six home runs and 41 RBI in 84 games with Clearwater in his first full professional season. The Athletics say all three will remain in the minors, so leave them for long-term keeper formats.
News: With Brett Myers sent to Triple-A to work on his stuff, J.A. Happ is a leading candidate to be called up to start Friday against the Mets. Double-A prospect Carlos Carrasco struggled mightily in his last start, while Class A lefty Joe Savery is clearly not ready, Double-A lefty Antonio Bastardo is on the DL and Double-A lefty Josh Outman has worked mostly as a reliever to date. The Phillies have not stretched out reliever Chad Durbin and likely will keep him in the bullpen, which has been the best in the NL this season.
Analysis: Happ, who is 5-6 with a 3.54 ERA and a .243 batting-average against, is a must-add in all deeper leagues immediately. There is the potential he can be a winner for an offensively potent contender in Philly. Carrasco, Bastardo, Savery and Outman are prospects long term, but they clearly need more work. Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: The Phillies reassigned left-handed pitcher Josh Outman and outfielders Greg Golson and Brandon Watson to the minor leagues.
Analysis: Outman has the potential to be a big league pitcher down the line, while Golson and Watson have some speed potential for deeper NL-only Rotisserie leagues if they are called up and get playing time. Ignore them on Draft Day at this point.
News:Josh Outman shook off a difficult debut to work three scoreless innings against the Pirates in a spring training game Monday. He got the relief win.
Analysis: Outman still isn't a player to concern yourself with outside of larger NL-only keeper leagues as a young pitcher in the Pirates' system.
