News: The Pirates have signed RP Brett Sinkbeil.
Analysis: Sinkbeil, a former first-round pick, was released by the Marlins in late March. He has never lived up to expectations and can continue to be ignored in Fantasy play.
News: The Marlins released former first-round pick RP Brett Sinkbeil from minor league camp on Tuesday, reports the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
Analysis: Sinkbeil, picked 19th overall in 2006, made his MLB debut last season, pitching in three September games. Converted into a reliever heading into 2009, Sinkbeil never lived up to expectations and can continue to be ignored in Fantasy play.
News: Florida recalled RP Brett Sinkbeil from Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday. This is his first stint in the major leagues. He went 3-3 with a 5.52 ERA in 57 relief appearances at New Orleans this year.
Analysis: Sinkbeil will provide bullpen depth for the Marlins, and as a middle reliever, he will have virtually no Fantasy value. He can be ignored.
News: The Marlins have cut the following players from camp: SP Jay Buente, SP Brett Sinkbeil, RP Kris Harvey, RP Dan Jennings, RP Matt Peterson, RP Chris Schroder, C Chris C. Hatcher, 3B Matt Dominguez and SS Ozzie Martinez.
Analysis: Dominguez, the 12th overall pick from 2007 who hit just .247 last season in the minors, is the only real elite prospect among this group. He remains a keeper option, while Sinkbeil is also worth keeping an eye on in dynasty formats. The rest of these guys can continue to be ignored in Fantasy play.
News: The Marlins added reliever Jose Ceda, pitcher Brett Sinkbeil, pitcher Jay Buente, pitcher Kris Harvey and outfielder Scott Cousins to the 40-man roster, protecting them from the Rule-5 draft.
Analysis: Cousins has pop, while Ceda and Sinkbeil have intriguing arms. None of these players figure to significantly impact Fantasy leagues in 2010, though.
News: The Miami Herald reports that SP John Koronka is the favorite to get Tuesday's start for the Marlins. He was not listed among the upcoming probable pitchers for Triple-A New Orleans.
Analysis: Koronka will get the call over Sean West, Brett Sinkbeil, Darren Barone, Ryan Tucker and Aaron Thompson. Koronka is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 27 innings over 10 appearances in 2009 (four starts). In 2006, he made 23 starts for the Rangers, going 7-7 with a 5.69 ERA. He will get two starts for Florida in Fantasy Week 6 (May 11-17), against the Brewers and the Dodgers, but will only be worth using as a flier in deeper NL-only leagues.
News:Anibal Sanchez was taken out of Thursday's start against the Braves with what the team is calling "shoulder discomfort". He pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs before leaving the game. He threw 71 pitches and allowed seven hits, striking out three batters and walking one. Rotation candidates include Sean West, Brett Sinkbeil and Aaron Thompson.
Analysis: Sanchez sure looked upset and disappointed when he left the mount and first glance would make it appear as though this would be an injury that could easily land him on the disabled list. The question may be how long this could keep him out. The original word from the team was that he had shoulder discomfort, but expect MRI results to reveal the actual extent of the injury and begin to prepare for an extended stint with Sanchez. There is a possibility that whomever replaces Sanchez could be a two-start pitcher in Week 6 (May 11-17). West got off to a solid start in Double-A Jacksonville, but now has a 6.39 ERA through five starts. Sinkbeil has a 9.69 ERA in New Orleans. Thompson has a 4.50 ERA in Jacksonville. Clearly, any of these options would only be recommended for deeper NL-only formats.
News: The Marlins reassigned eight players to minor league camp: Left-handers Sean West and Willie Collazo, right-handers Brett Sinkbeil and Jason Standridge, infielders Logan Morrison, John Lindsey and Manny Mayorson and outfielder Scott Cousins.
Analysis: These players are obviously all prospects in the Marlins organization and won't make much of an impact in 2009. Leave them on waivers until they become more ready for the Majors.
News: According to The Sports Xchange, five Marlins prospects have been invited to major league spring training. They include C Kyle Skipworth, a first-round draft pick in 2008; 2B Chris Coghlan; 3B Matt Dominguez, a first-round selection in 2007; RHP Brett Sinkbeil, a first-round pick in 2006; and 1B Logan Morrison, the 2008 Florida State League MVP.
Analysis: All of these players have some upside but none figure to play a prominent role with the Marlins in the 2009 season. Leave them on waivers unless you're in a long-term keeper league.
News: The Marlins optioned Daniel Barone, Brett Sinkbeil, Ryan Tucker and Aaron Thompson to minor league camp Wednesday.
Analysis: Barone was a candidate to make the rotation, but he and these others will work on a more regular schedule in minor league camp. Sinkbeil has the best long-term potential, but we could see all of these guys being rotation starters in the big leagues at some point. Consider them nothing more than minor league prospect fliers in 2008.
