Hank Conger delivers career-high five RBIs

(5/11/2014) Angels catcher Hank Conger belted a three-run homer and had a career-high five RBI in Sunday's 9-3 win over the Blue Jays. Conger's 3-for-4 day upped his average to .314/.364/.569 in 51 at-bats.

Conger had an RBI double and RBI single in addition to his three-run, sixth-inning blast, his third homer this season.

Conger has done a great job at the plate in limited work with the Angels this season, hitting .324/.361/.588 in 34 at-bats. He has smacked two home runs and driven in eight runners in 12 games.

Conger wasted no time getting started, doubling in his first at-bat. He also added an RBI double in the fifth, and singled in the ninth. Conger finished the game 3 for 5, with one run scored and three RBI. He raised his batting average to .310 with the strong performance.

Conger struck in the bottom of the fifth, taking a first-pitch slider from Bartolo Colon out to right field for a two-run shot. Conger also doubled in the game. He finished 2 for 5, with two runs scored and two RBI.

(10/21/2013) The Blue Jays have interest in acquiring catcher Hank Conger from the Angels, according to the Toronto Sun. They may attempt to trade for Conger or teammate Chris Iannetta to upgrade at the catcher position, currently held by J.P. Arencibia.

In his first season in which he did not play some portion in the minor leagues, Conger appeared in 92 games, hitting .249 with seven home runs and 21 RBI.

(8/7/2013) Chris Iannetta has taken over again as the Angels' primary catcher. After a stretch where Hank Conger was starting against right-handed pitchers, Iannetta has started 12 of 19 games since the All-Star break and seven of the last eight games through Tuesday.

"Hank's going to get time," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, per MLB.com. "Chris' defense is starting to play a lot more, and that's important. At the plate, he's been pretty consistent with what he's done. He's taken his walks, I think he's starting to feel a little more comfortable in the batter's box. But, I think on the defensive side, he's doing a good job."

Iannetta believes he could avoid a platoon situation if he starts playing better, MLB.com reports. He is hitting .210 with six homers and 27 RBI while Conger is batting .244 with six homers and 14 RBI on the year.

"If I were still contributing offensively, I'd still be playing," Iannetta said Friday after being held out of the lineup for a second straight day. "Hank's playing great, and he's doing a great offensive job for us right now, and that's what we need. We need that position to help the team out."

(7/8/2013) Angels catcher Hank Conger crushed a solo home run in Sunday's win over Boston.

The home run was his only hit in three at-bats. Conger now has six homers, tying his career-high in 2011. He has taken 65 fewer at-bats this year than in 2011 and is enjoying his best season at the plate in a four-year major-league career. Conger is hitting .259/.303/.464 in 43 games.

(7/4/2013) The Angels got a rare contribution from catcher Hank Conger Wednesday, but it came in a 12-2 blowout loss to the Cardinals. Conger homered for the first time in nine games, a two-run home run that accounted for the entirety of the team's offense.

Conger went 1 for 3, raising his batting average to .267. He has five home runs and 13 RBI in 105 at-bats.

(3/18/2013) Hank Conger has fared well with the bat so far this spring, hitting .417 with a .750 slugging percentage through 11 Cactus League games, but his defensive struggles prompted the Angels to sign Chris Snyder on Monday. Snyder will compete for the backup duties at catcher behind Chris Iannetta, a job that Conger seemed primed for earlier in camp.

Conger has had a hard time throwing runners out this spring.

"It's frustrating because I feel like I'm doing everything else well as far as receiving, blocking balls, getting on the same page with the pitchers, hitting," Conger told The Los Angeles Times. "But I know I can't hide this. It's going to get magnified. That's the nature of the game. I have to get past it."

Conger has wanted to establish himself as a major league starter, but that won't happen for the 25-year-old after Iannetta signed an extension in the offseason. "He earned it," Conger said. "For me, whether they sign him or anybody else or they didn't, I still have to go in trying to get better and try to prove better, because in this game, nothing's handed to you."
