Astros C Hank Conger homers twice in career night on Saturday

(8/2/2015) Astros catcher Hank Conger had a huge night at the plate in the 9-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Conger went 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs, his first career multi-home run game of his career.

Conger feasted on the pitching of Jeremy Hellickson on Saturday. He launched a solo shot in the third inning, and then blasted his first-career grand slam in the fourth inning.

Conger now has eight home runs on the year, which represents a new career-high.

He has been sharing time behind the plate with Jason Castro. But Conger is 8 for 26 with three homers and eight RBI over his past eight games.

(6/24/2015) Astros catcher Hank Conger, making just his eighth start behind the plate, had a nice night at the plate on Tuesday. Conger went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored, as he brought his season average up to .232.

This was Conger's second three-hit performance of the season. His RBI single in the ninth inning put Houston on top 12-2, as they topped the Angles 13-3 on Tuesday.

(6/16/2015) Astros catcher Hank Conger lifted off for his fourth home run in Tuesday's 8-5 victory over the Rockies. Conger put the icing on the cake, as his solo home run in the fifth inning provided the final score.

Conger, who went 2 for 4 with two RBI on Tuesday, has been a part-time player, with Jason Castro getting regular reps behind the plate. But when he's played, Conger has hit. In 10 games this month (six starts), Conger is hitting .333 (9 for 27) with two home runs and six RBI.

Conger went 1 for 4 at the plate, but drove in the two runs when he hit a double in the fourth inning. He would later walk to drive in his third run of the game.

Prior to Sunday's contest, Conger was hitting .250 with one home run and two RBI in his last 11 games.

(6/4/2015) Astros catcher Hank Conger belted his third home run of the season in the 3-2 loss to the Orioles on Thursday. Conger's solo shot came off Wei-Yin Chen in the third inning and temporarily tied the game 1-1. 

Conger, who also doubled in the game, has been getting fairly limited playing time as Jason Castro's back-up behind the plate. Conger now has six hits in 22 at-bats over his last six games, dating back to May 21.

Castro suffered a right knee contusion when a fastball caught him on the outside of the knee on Monday. He was unable to start on Tuesday.

(5/4/2015) Astros manager A.J. Hinch held catcher Jason Castro out of the lineup on Monday against the Rangers. Castro has been struggling this year, hitting just .171 over his last 10 games for Houston, though he is currently riding a five-game hit streak.

Hank Conger got the start behind the plate against left-hander Ross Detwiler. The switch-hitting Castro has struggled to hit lefties, collecting just three hits in 19 at-bats against southpaws.

(5/2/2015) Astros catcher Hank Conger went 3 for 4 at the plate in Houston's 11-4 win over the Mariners Saturday. Conger cracked singles in his first two at-bats in the game before going deep in the seventh, taking a Tyler Olson pitch to left center field for a solo shot, his second of the year.

Conger is now hitting .263 with three RBI in 19 at-bats this season.

(4/12/2015) Astros catcher Hank Conger needed just one at-bat Sunday in Houston's 6-4 win over the Rangers in 14 innings. Conger came in as a defensive replacement for Jason Castro in the 12th inning with pitcher Will Harris.

He came up in the 14th with Evan Gattis on first and ripped the first pitch he saw from Logan Verrett to deep right field for a two-run home run, his first of the season. It was Conger's sixth in the last two seasons.

(3/5/2015) Astros catcher Hank Conger is dealing with a minor left wrist injury, according to the Houston Chronicle. However, he could catch in a game this weekend.

“Conger has been delayed a little bit,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “I think we’re going to get him in a game this weekend, he’s not injured. It’s just we’re delaying the start of his spring until most likely this weekend. … We’ve tried to be good to these guys on the health side and our trainers have kept him healthy.

“I think he’s catching a 'pen today. We held him off a couple days, but he’s fine. He just needed a day.”


Astros avoid arbitration with Hank Conger, Tony Sipp

(1/16/2015) The Astros have avoided arbitration with Hank Conger and Tony Sipp prior to Friday's deadline, per the team's official website. Conger signed a one-year, $1.075 million contract, while Sipp settled for $2.4 million.

Conger hit .221 with four homers and 21 RBI over 231 at-bats in 2014. Sipp registered a 3.38 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP over 50 2/3 innings of work last season.

(11/20/2014) The Tigers have had preliminary talks with the Astros about a potential trade involving a catcher, according to FOX Sports reporter Jon Morosi. Houston appears willing to trade Jason Castro, Carlos Corporan or Hank Conger.

However, it appears the talks between the two teams are over, as the Tigers have moved on, a source told MLB.com. The talks were believed to be centered around a deal involving Corporan.
