Rodriguez performed well in six games with the club, posting a 1.13 ERA. Catcher Stephen Vogt replaced Rodriguez on the active roster.


Athletics promote two pitchers from Triple-A

(5/9/2014) The Athletics have promoted right-hander Fernando Rodriguez and lefty Joe Savery from Triple-A Sacramento.

The former had been sent down in late April. The latter has not pitched for Oakland this season, but did perform well in 18 appearances with Philadelphia in 2013.

(4/4/2014) Athletics reliever Fernando Rodriguez began his minor-league rehab assignment Thursday for Triple-A Sacramento as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Rodriguez pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one run and striking out one batter, while throwing  11 of 18 pitches for strikes.

It is not yet known how long he is expected to remain in the minors on his rehab assignment.

Rodriguez is coming off Tommy John surgery, but was able to toss a simulated game last week. He was initially ticketed to remain in Arizona for extended spring training, but the team has reconsidered after seeing his progress. There's still a possibility Rodriguez remains behind when the team leaves, but there's a chance he won't need it.

(2/25/2014) Athletics pitcher Fernando Rodriguez faced batters Tuesday for the first time since last March as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery, MLB.com reports.

"Not what I expected it to be, I guess, because I had such an adrenaline rush, so the ball was flying out of my hand," Rodriguez said. "It's kind of exciting. It's something I've been waiting for a while. I couldn't have asked for a better day for it being the first time throwing off the mound to hitters."

Rodriguez threw 20 pitches and impressed with improved mechanics in the batting-practice session. He'll progress to simulated games by the end of spring but is still uncertain to see any action in Cactus League games.

Rodriguez said he was ready to go after Tommy John surgery, and that he would receive a lot of work during the spring. That work is likely to come in simulated or controlled games, however. Rodriguez has made progress, and has been able to throw off a mound. He missed all of last season due to the surgery.

Rodriguez is recovering after having Tommy John surgery last season. "I'm told they'll have me doing twice as much as everyone else to test arm," Rodriguez said. "I'm good, been throwing off mound," he added. Rodriguez will compete for a bullpen spot.

A's tender contracts to nine arbitration-eligible players

(12/2/2013) The Athletics opted not to let go of nine arbitration-eligible players, as they tendered contracts to them all prior to Monday's deadline. The players are: catcher John Jason, infielders Daric Barton, Brandon Moss and Jed Lowrie, outfielders Josh Reddick and Seth Smith, and pitchers Jerry Blevins, Jesse Chavez and Fernando Rodriguez.

The team has already reached a one-year contract with Rodriguez, though details have not been announced by the team. They will likely continue to negotiate with the other players prior to arbitration hearings.

Rodriguez missed the entire season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He'll be healthy for the spring and will compete for a bullpen gig. 

Sizemore, who is 28, missed a second consecutive season after he tore his ACL last spring. He's expected back for spring training 2014.

(3/23/2013) The Oakland Athletics claimed first baseman Nate Freiman off waivers from the Houston Astros on Saturday, MLB.com reports.

In order to clear a spot on the roster, Oakland placed relief pitcher Fernando Rodriguez on the 60-day disabled list. Rodriguez is likely done for the season and may need Tommy John surgery. 

Freiman is a Rule 5 draft pick, so the A's will have to keep him on the roster all season or offer him back to the Padres.

Rodriguez, who walked that batter he faced, left the game holding his right elbow and was diagnosed with right elbow tightness. He's allowed three earned runs this spring over four appearances and 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.
