News: Atlanta relief pitcher Buddy Carlyle allowed two runs and three hits in four innings during the Braves' 7-5 victory over the Mets in a Grapefruit League contest on Tuesday. Carlyle, making his first appearance of the spring, finished with two strikeouts and a walk. His ERA stands at 4.50.
Analysis: Carlyle rejoined the Braves after being designated for assignment by the Yankees during the offseason. The right-hander appeared in eight games for New York last season, his first since 2009. He is unlikely to break camp with Atlanta and should be ignored in all Fantasy formats.
News: The Yankees released RP Buddy Carlyle on Saturday. He was ineffective for New York earlier this year with a 4.70 ERA over eight appearances.
Analysis: Carlyle was actually decent down at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but the Yankees needed someone to help in the major league bullpen. The 33-year-old has no Fantasy value at this time.
News: The Yankees outrighted RP Buddy Carlyle to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre on Wednesday. Carlyle had been designated for assignment on June 29.
Analysis: Carlyle allowed two runs in an inning of work during his lone appearance as his ERA swelled to 4.70 this season. The veteran right-hander had nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings, but also struggled with his control. He should continue to be ignored in all Fantasy formats.
News: The Yankees designated RP Buddy Carlyle for assignment after acquiring Sergio Mitre from Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Carlyle was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday after Jeff Marquez was placed on the disabled list.
Analysis: Carlyle (0-1) allowed two runs in an inning of work during his lone appearance as his ERA swelled to 4.70 this season. The veteran right-hander had nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings, but also struggled with his control. He should continue to be ignored in all Fantasy formats.
News: Yankees RP Jeff Marquez was placed on the 15-day disabled list after the first game of Wednesday's day/night doubleheader in Cincinnati with a shoulder issue. He was replaced on the roster by RHP Buddy Carlyle.
Analysis: Carlyle will provide the team with a fresh arm in the bullpen. He will pitch in middle relief and may not be up in the big leagues long, making him a player to avoid in Fantasy.
News: The Yankees recalled SP Hector Noesi prior to Friday's series opener against Boston. Buddy Carlyle was sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to clear room on the roster.
Analysis: Carlyle allowed two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings in seven appearances. As an expendable middle reliever, he has minimal Fantasy appeal.
News: New York RP Buddy Carlyle made his debut on Saturday night against Baltimore. Carlyle issued one walk in his inning of relief following eight stellar innings from CC Sabathia. New York would go on to win the game, 15-3, as Carlyle didn't allow a hit or rally by the Orioles in the ninth.
Analysis: Carlyle was called up on Friday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to give the Yankees another solid long-relief pitcher. Carlyle was 0-1 with 3.52 ERA in five outings in Triple-A. Fantasy owners shouldn't pay much attention to Carlyle as he's merely a middle reliever. Despite getting his first action, he can be ignored in all formats.
News: According to The Journal News, the Yankees called RP Buddy Carlyle up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. They sent pitcher Hector Noesi to Triple-A to make room on the roster for Carlyle. Manager Joe Girardi said Carlyle will be able to give them three innings, if necessary, much like fellow reliever Lance Pendleton.
Analysis: Carlyle was 0-1 with 3.52 ERA in five outings in Triple-A. He's struck out 11 batters and issued just three walks. Fantasy owners shouldn't pay much attention to Carlyle as he's merely a middle reliever. He can be ignored in all formats.
News: The Yankees made several more cuts on Sunday morning, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. New York cut Buddy Carlyle, Brian Anderson, Andy Sisco, Hector Noesi and Adam Warren.
Analysis: Carlyle had one appearance in spring training and allowed two earned runs over an inning. Even if he had made the roster, he would have been bullpen depth. He has little Fantasy value.
News: The Yankees signed RP Buddy Carlyle to a minor league deal on Thursday, according to the New York Post. Carlyle spent 2010 playing in Japan and last pitched in the majors in 2009 for Atlanta. The 32-year-old has pitched 245 2/3 innings for three different major league teams, compiling a 5.61 ERA.
Analysis: Carlyle has tended to give up a lot of home runs over the course of his career, making him a questionable fit for the Yankees, who play in a great home run environment at home. Carlyle would be a marginal pitcher for Fantasy anyway, but now he can definitely be avoided in all formats.
News: Atlanta Braves pitcher Buddy Carlyle signed to play in Japan for the Nippon Ham Fighters.
Analysis: Carlyle can be ignored in all Fantasy leagues. He wasn't going to have much of a role with the 2010 Braves anyway.
News: The Braves removed Jordan Schafer (wrist surgery) from the 60-day DL. Also, they outrighted pitcher Buddy Carlyle, pitcher Jorge Campillo (shoulder), reliever Vladimir Nunez and outfielder Reid Gorecki to the minor leagues.
Analysis: Schafer could be a sleeper in deeper leagues in 2010 as a reserve outfielder, but these others are nothing more than organizational depth at this point. Ignore them in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Braves called up RP Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday. He was on the DL for 2 1/2 months with an upper back strain and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes during his layoff.
Analysis: Carlyle might not be in the bigs for long since the Braves have to open up a roster spot for Tim Hudson before Monday. He has started in the past, but right now he's just a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: The Atlanta Braves optioned RHP Buddy Carlyle to the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves, removing him from the 15-day DL.
Analysis: Carlyle is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues right now.
News: MLB.com reports that Braves RP Buddy Carlyle had his rehab start rained out on Saturday, so he will next start for Class A Rome on Tuesday and is scheduled to pitch two innings. "I feel really good right now," Carlyle said. "My arm feels good, my body feels good and I've been managing the blood sugar. My velocity has been a lot better."
Analysis: Carlyle is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues, when healthy.
News: Braves RP Buddy Carlyle, pitching for the first time since being diagnosed with diabetes a month ago, began a rehab assignment for Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. He pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two.
Analysis: The Braves might not even need Carlyle when his rehab assignment ends. He's just a middle reliever and not worth owning in Fantasy.
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Braves RP Buddy Carlyle (diabetes, back) is scheduled to begin a Triple-A rehab assignment on Monday.
Analysis: Carlyle is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues, when healthy.
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Braves RP Buddy Carlyle (back) threw BP on Thursday and could be ready for a rehab assignment soon.
Analysis: Carlyle is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues, when healthy. Continue to ignore him while he's on the DL.
News: RHP Buddy Carlyle, placed on the 15-day DL on May 26 with an upper back strain, has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after his sudden loss of about 15 pounds, according to manager Bobby Cox.
Analysis: Carlyle is dealing with a variety of medical issues at the moment that may delay his return from the disabled list. He is not a recommended option in Fantasy leagues.
News: The Braves placed right-hander Buddy Carlyle on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with an upper back strain and activated righty Jorge Campillo from the DL. Campillo missed 35 games with rotator cuff tendinitis in his throwing shoulder.
Analysis: Carlyle is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: From the The Sports Xchange: RHP Buddy Carlyle has given up two grand slams this season, one each in his last two appearances, May 13 at the Mets and May 16 at home against the Diamondbacks. Those are the only two slams the pitching staff has allowed.
Analysis: Carlyle is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: The Braves apparently will recalled pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes for their vacant rotation spot Tuesday. Chuck James and relievers Jeff Bennett and Buddy Carlyle have been passed up for the spot.
Analysis: Reyes is nothing more than a high-risk starting pitcher for the deepest NL-only leagues at this point. He has long-term potential, though, unlike Bennett and Carlyle, who are nothing more than low-end middle relievers for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: Atlanta Braves right-hander Buddy Carlyle (neck) was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday, and reliever Chris Resop was designated for assignment.
Analysis: Carlyle was placed on the disabled list on May 10, retroactive to May 9, with a strained left neck muscle. Carlyle is needed because the Braves are not certain Jorge Campillo, who has blisters on two fingers on his pitching hand, will be able to make his next scheduled start Thursday at Milwaukee. Carlyle made 20 starts for Atlanta in 2007, when he was 8-7 with a 5.21 ERA, and he's once again worth a look in NL-only leagues.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Buddy Carlyle says his strained left neck muscle is improving, but he still can't turn his head to his right very far or very naturally when spoken to.
Analysis: Carlyle is a journeyman reliever and spot starter who is nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues when he gets spot starts. He is not worth owning in Fantasy leagues right now.
News: The Atlanta Braves recalled Chuck James from Triple-A Richmond to start Saturday night's game against the Pirates and placed reliever Buddy Carlyle on the 15-day disabled list with a strained neck. James was 2-1 with a 7.62 ERA in three starts with Atlanta earlier this season.
Analysis: Carlyle is a journeyman reliever and spot starter who is nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues when he gets spot starts. He is not worth owning in Fantasy leagues right now.
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that while the Braves have not officially named a starter for Saturday's game in Pittsburgh, they will likely go with Chuck James. Since they have to make a roster move to get him up from Triple-A Richmond, the team might put Buddy Carlyle (stiff neck) on the 15-day disabled list after colliding with 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff on Thursday. Carlyle didn't pitch Friday at Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Carlyle is a journeyman reliever and spot starter who is nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues when he gets spot starts. Track his progress through the weekend before considering him in deeper leagues.
News:Buddy Carlyle left Thursday's game against San Diego in the top of the fifth inning after colliding with Kevin Kouzmanoff on the basepath to first base. The third baseman's left thigh rammed into Carlyle's head as the pitcher bent down to field the ball and apply a tag.
Analysis: Carlyle came into the game to replace Jo-Jo Reyes, who had left with a developing blister. If Reyes cannot make his next start, and Carlyle feels up to it, he could be a candidate to make a spot start next week. He is a journeyman reliever and spot starter who is nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues if he gets spot starts. Track their progress through the weekend before considering either of them viable for those deeper leagues they might be needed in.
News: Braves left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes left Thursday's game against San Diego after developing a blister on his left index finger. Reyes, making his second start of the season, gave up five hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings. He was removed in the third inning after issuing his second walk. Buddy Carlyle relieved Reyes.
Analysis: Reyes is a risky option for Fantasy Week 7 (May 12-18) at this point. He is a decent long-term prospect, but you clearly will have to expect inconsistency this season. If Reyes cannot make his start, Carlyle could be a candidate to make a spot start next week. He is a journeyman reliever and spot starter who is nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues if he gets spot starts. Track their progress through the weekend before considering either of them viable for those deeper leagues they might be needed in.
News: The Braves will likely turn to Buddy Carlyle, called up Tuesday to take Peter Moylan's spot on the roster, to start Friday's game against the Dodgers, according to MLB.com.
Analysis: The Braves need an extra arm with both Mike Hampton and Chuck James on the disabled list. Carlyle went 8-7 with a 5.37 ERA in 20 starts last year, so he's not worth adding outside of deeper AL-only leagues.
News: The Braves called up reliever Buddy Carlyle and placed Peter Moylan (right elbow soreness) on the 15-day DL. Manny Acosta, who is sporting a 7.20 ERA, is likely the first in line to save games. Lefty Will Ohman could be an option in certain situations, too.
Analysis: Moylan was a workhorse last season, but elbow issues are risky propositions that need time to calm down. Acosta is a must-add in all NL-only leagues, while Ohman is an option for deeper formats where middle relievers are used. Ohman could be used to close if the Braves need a lefty for matchups. Carlyle could be a spot start candidate for Tom Glavine (hamstring) or a long relief option out of the bullpen. He is nothing more than a low-end, high-risk NL-only option at this point.
News: The Braves set their 25-man roster by optioning RHP Buddy Carlyle to Triple-A Richmond on Saturday. RHP Jeff Bennett claimed the final spot in the bullpen.
Analysis: Carlyle became a regular in the Braves rotation for a while last year, but desperate times called for desperate measures. He's nothing more than organizational depth right now, so leave him off Fantasy rosters.
News:Mike Hampton threw a simulated game on a practice field Wednesday and walked away with a smile on his face. Trying a comeback after missing the past two seasons with injuries, the Atlanta left-hander threw 59 pitches during a four-inning stint before the Braves' 11-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Buddy Carlyle started against Cleveland in place of Hampton and gave up three homers, but the Braves scored nine runs in the fourth. Carlyle gave up homers to Asdrubal Cabrera, Beau Mills and Grady Sizemore -- all left-handed hitters -- in his three-inning outing. "It seemed like they came on similar pitches," the right-hander said. "They just dropped the bat head." He allowed five hits and struck out four.
Analysis: The Braves had Carlyle on the roster in 2007 to act as a middle reliever. However, when injuries depleted the rotation as early as May, Carlyle stepped into the rotation and performed admirably through September. Carlyle will not open the season in the rotation in 2008, but might be called on as a spot starter. His Fantasy value lies in the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle (elbow) made his final start of the 2007 season on Sunday against the Astros. He allowed five hits and three runs in four innings. He walked two and struck out five. Carlyle had not pitched since Sept. 15.
Analysis: Carlyle helped the Braves out in a pinch in 2007 as injuries devastated the rotation. He started off well, but wore down as the season went on. Carlyle might get a shot to start come spring training. If the longshot somehow wins a job, he would be nothing more than a risky NL-only Fantasy option.
News: Braves RHP Buddy Carlyle has a hyperextended right elbow and will miss his Tuesday start. Jo-Jo Reyes is expected to start in his place.
Analysis: Carlyle could return over the weekend, but that's not enough to consider him in any league for Fantasy Week 25 (Sept. 17-23). Keep the back-end starter reserved in all formats.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle made a rare relief appearance Saturday, as starter Lance Cormier only lasted two innings and the Braves didn't want to tax their bullpen. The Braves might have preferred a tired bullpen in retrospect because, while batting in the fourth inning, Carlyle hyperextended his right elbow. The Braves removed him from the game after he threw his warmup pitches when he came out for the fifth inning. He pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Analysis: No word yet on how much time Carlyle will miss. The right-hander has come way back down to earth after a surprising start and doesn't even make a good NL-only option anymore. This setback probably gives Fantasy owners an excuse to cut him in all leagues.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle, staked to an early 9-0 lead in the Braves' 13-5 win at the Mets on Tuesday, couldn't get out of the third inning, leaving with the Braves ahead 10-3. He didn't earn a decision, giving up six hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Analysis: The nine percent of Fantasy owners who started Carlyle would've liked him to pick up the W. The right-hander has come way back down to earth after a surprising start and doesn't even make a good NL-only option anymore. Reserve him in all but the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: Manager Bobby Cox said RHP Buddy Carlyle will start on Tuesday at the New York Mets. Cox waited to announce the starter in case Carlyle was needed in relief during the weekend. LHP Jo-Jo Reyes was the alternate starter if needed.
Analysis: Carlyle has been terrible lately after a surprising start and should only be used in the deepest of NL-only formats heading into Fantasy Week 24 (Sept. 10-16).
News: Buddy Carlyle (8-6) lasted just 1 2/3 innings in Tuesday's start against the Phillies, giving up four hits, three runs and three walks in the shortest start of his career. The right-hander, who struck out one, has allowed 12 homers in his past 11 starts.
Analysis: Carlyle has been terrible lately after a surprising start and should only be used in the deepest of NL-only formats heading into Fantasy Week 24 (Sept. 10-16).
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle, who had lost his past three starts, gave up two homers but departed after five innings with a 7-3 lead Wednesday against the Marlins. He earned his eighth win as the Braves held on to a 7-4 decision. Carlyle allowed four hits, three runs and three walks. He struck out six.
Analysis: Carlyle was able to keep the Marlins off the scoreboard for the most part after allowing 11 runs and 16 hits in his previous two starts. Carlyle is still having trouble pitching deep into games, but playing for the contending Braves makes him a low-end Fantasy option in larger league. His next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Phillies.
News: The Braves reportedly will start John Smoltz at the Marlins on three day's rest Tuesday, moving Buddy Carlyle to Wednesday. This will allow the Braves to align their weekend rotation vs. the Mets, Tim Hudson, Chuck James and Smoltz on Sunday.
Analysis: Carlyle had a snow ball's chance in Haiti to be a two-start pitcher this week anyway. He will be pitching for his rotation spot Wednesday and might not make another start down the stretch with the pending return of Chuck James (shoulder) this weekend.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle remained winless in three starts (0-2) after Thursday's no-decision against the Reds. He allowed six hits, six runs and one walk in five innings. He struck out three. Carlyle has allowed 22 hits and 14 earned runs in his last three starts.
Analysis: The wheels finally seem to be coming off at the wrong time for Carlyle. After a great start with the Braves, he seems to be settling into his potential. He still remains a decent low-end Fantasy option pitching for the playoff contending Braves, just keep expectations in line. His next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Marlins.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle went five horrible innings during Saturday's loss to the Diamondbacks. He gave up 10 hits, eight runs -- five earned -- with two walks while striking out four. It was his second consecutive loss.
Analysis: Carlyle has allowed five or more runs in just three starts this season. He hasn't been that bad of a pitcher for the Braves, but still should be used in only the deepest of Fantasy leagues. His next scheduled start is for Thursday against the Reds.
News: Buddy Carlyle gave up four runs -- three earned -- and six hits in 4 1/3 innings in Sunday's start at Philadelphia. The big blow was a three-run home run to Ryan Howard, a 391-foot shot. "We lost on a ball that just happened to go out of the ballpark," teammate Jeff Francoeur said. "That's all I can say. It's tough to lose that way."
Analysis: Carlyle will face probable starter Micah Owings and the Diamondbacks on Saturday. He remains a useful only in most NL-only leagues heading into Fantasy Week 20 (Aug. 13-19).
News: Nobody appreciated the early runs more than Buddy Carlyle (7-3), who worked the first five innings Tuesday night. "It's easier to pitch when you get those early runs," Carlyle said. "I know my role. Try to keep my team in the game every game, give my team a chance to win. If I can do that, I've done my job."
Analysis: Carlyle is a sleeper for deeper leagues, especially on the contender in Atlanta and because they have a great bullpen that will shorten the game for him. He should win more games down the stretch, so take the flier now and use him in two-start weeks or out of necessity.
News: RHP Buddy Carlyle, who injured his side while batting in his previous start and had to leave after five innings, threw a regular bullpen session Sunday. He said he felt fine and would be the starter Tuesday against the Mets.
Analysis: Carlyle would be a two-start sleeper, but at the New York Mets and at Philly are a pair of tough matchups for the journeyman back-end Braves starter. Use him at your own risk in Fantasy Week 19 (Aug. 6-12).
News: Atlanta RHP Buddy Carlyle, who left Wednesday night's game in the sixth inning with a hyperextended elbow, shouldn't miss a turn. "He told me he'd be fine," manager Bobby Cox said.
Analysis: Carlyle has been a solid back-end pitcher for the Braves, winning five of his last seven starts. He hasn't allowed more than four earned runs during that seven-game stretch. Carlyle's next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Mets. When healthy, he is a solid NL-only and larger mixed league Fantasy flier.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle gave up five hits and two runs in five innings during Wednesday's win against the Astros, but left the game with an elbow injury. He left after experiencing apparent discomfort while warming up in the sixth. Carlyle, who appeared to wince in pain while swinging and missing a pitch in the bottom of the fifth, is listed as day to day. He struck out two batters Wednesday.
Analysis: As absurd as this might sound, this might be a huge loss for the Braves. Carlyle has been a solid back-end pitcher for the Braves, winning five of his last seven starts. He hasn't allowed more than four earned runs during that seven-game stretch. Carlyle's next scheduled start for Tuesday against the Mets is in jeopardy. When healthy, he is a solid NL-only and larger mixed league Fantasy flier.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle lost for the first time in six starts Thursday against the Giants. He allowed nine hits, four runs and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four. Carlyle came into the game a winner in three straight starts. He allowed just seven earned runs in that span.
Analysis: Carlyle has come out of nowhere to be a Fantasy friendly player. He didn't pitch all that bad Thursday, he just ran up against another red hot pitcher in rookie Tim Lincecum. Continue to view Carlyle as a low-end mixed league Fantasy option at this time. His next scheduled start is for Wednesday against the Astros.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle allowed seven hits and three runs on his way to winning for the fifth time this season during Saturday's game against the Cardinals. He walked one and struck out two. Carlyle is 4-0 in his last five starts. He has allowed eight earned runs in that span.
Analysis: Carlyle has come out of nowhere to be a Fantasy friendly player. While he is on a roll and racking up wins, he has become a viable Fantasy option in all formats. His next scheduled start is for Thursday against the Giants.
News: Buddy Carlyle pitched eight impressive innings to win his third straight decision and the surging Atlanta Braves got four hits from Edgar Renteria, completing a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-1 victory Sunday. Making his first career appearance against Pittsburgh, Carlyle (4-2) gave up one run and four hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. The right-hander improved to 3-0 over his last four starts.
Analysis: Carlyle has allowed one or fewer earned runs in three of his last four starts. He is starting to develop into a nice pitcher for the Braves and likely has solidified his spot in the rotation. Use him in larger Fantasy leagues at this time. His next scheduled start is for Saturday against the Cardinals.
News: Buddy Carlyle pitched eight strong innings against his former team as the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 7-4 on Friday. Carlyle (3-2), who made his big league debut with San Diego in 1999, went a career-high eight innings and matched his career best with seven strikeouts. He allowed three runs and eight hits while walking one. Carlyle also hit an RBI single. Carlyle has now won two of his last three starts.
Analysis: Carlyle has now allowed a total of four earned runs in 15 innings during his two recent wins. Don't get excited just yet. He will need to string many more wins together before becoming a viable mixed league Fantasy option. Continue to use him in larger NL-only leagues. Carlyle likely won't make another start until Fantasy Week 16 (July 16-22).
News: Braves manager Bobby Cox said RHP Buddy Carlyle, whose start on Sunday at Florida was shortened to 38 pitches over three innings because of a 1 1/2-hour rain delay, will not come back on short rest to make his next start.
Analysis: Carlyle is going to remain at the back end of the Braves rotation as long as an extra arm is needed. He is nothing special, so he remains just a NL-only option. His next scheduled start is Friday at San Diego.
News: Atlanta's Buddy Carlyle allowed one hit in three scoreless innings Sunday at Florida, but he did not return to pitch after a lenghty rain delay. He struck out two and walked none.
Analysis: Carlyle is going to remain at the back end of the Braves rotation as long as an extra arm is needed. He is nothing special, so he remains just a NL-only option. His next scheduled start is next Friday at San Diego.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle, coming off a dismal outing against the Boston Red Sox, did not get off to a great start Tuesday against the Nationals, but eventually settled down for the win. The Nationals strung together three straight hits in the first, but the last of those got Atlanta out of the inning. Felipe Lopez attempted to score on Dmitri Young's sharp single to left, only to get thrown out at the home by Matt Diaz. After blocking the plate and tagging out Lopez, catcher Brian McCann spotted Ryan Zimmerman trying to sneak from second to third. He, too, was thrown out to end the inning with a most unusual double play. Score it 7-2-6. Carlyle settled down after that, giving up just two more hits in his seven-inning stint. The last of those came in the third, a run-scoring double by former Atlanta outfielder Ryan Langerhans.
Analysis: Tuesday was quite a turnaround from Carlyle's last outing, when he lasted just 3 2/3 innings against the power-hitting Red Sox, surrendering seven runs and nine hits in an 11-0 loss. Of course, he was facing a less intimidating offense this time -- the Nationals are the NL's lowest-scoring team. Don't get excited just yet. Carlyle has to show more consistency to be considered outside of NL-only Fantasy leagues. His next scheduled start is for Monday against the Dodgers.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle lasted just 3 2/3 innings while earning his second loss of the season during Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. He allowed nine hits, three walks and seven earned runs. He had four strikeouts, but also allowed three homers. Carlyle has allowed a total of 12 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings during his two losses.
Analysis: Hand it to Carlyle. When he loses, he goes down in a firestorm. Carlyle is going to remain at the back end of the Braves rotation as long as an extra arm is needed. He is nothing special, so he remains just a NL-only option. His next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Nationals.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle pitched six innings Friday against the Indians, but wound with a no-decision. He allowed six hits, two walks and three runs (two earned) before hitting the showers. He also struck out two. It was his second straight no-decison.
Analysis: Carlyle has been a good filler for the Braves as they deal with a handful of injuries to their pitching staff. Still, he is nothing more than a NL-only flier. His next scheduled start is for Wednesday against the Red Sox.
News: John Smoltz, given his choice by manager Bobby Cox, will start Saturday at Cleveland, a move that lets RHP Buddy Carlyle start Friday, on his regular day. It also gives Smoltz another day to rest on the off day June 21.
Analysis: Carlyle gets the start Friday in Cleveland knowing he could cement a spot in the starting rotation with another good outing. In the last month, he has been the only consistent starter in the back end of the rotation, which includes RHP Kyle Davies and LHP Chuck James. Even if he does see another start or two, he remains useful only in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues at this time.
News: Buddy Carlyle will start for the Braves on Friday for the beginning of a three-game series at Cleveland, the team announced Wednesday. He allowed four earned runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings on Sunday against the Cubs, as he got the start in place of John Smoltz (shoulder).
Analysis: Carlyle might hang around with the Braves with Lance Cormier (arm) back on the 15-day disabled list even with Smoltz returning on Saturday. Even if he does see another start or two, he remains useful only in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues at this time.
News: Buddy Carlyle allowed four earned runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings on Sunday against the Cubs, as he got the start in place of John Smoltz (shoulder).
Analysis: Carlyle might hang around with the Braves with Lance Cormier (arm) back on the 15-day disabled list. Even if he does see another start or two, he remains useful only in the deepest of NL-only Fantasy leagues at this time.
News: Atlanta Braves veteran right-hander John Smoltz will miss his scheduled start Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. The Braves recalled pitcher Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Richmond to start Sunday against the Cubs.
Analysis: Carlyle (1-1) allowed only one hit in seven innings in a 3-1 win over Florida on Tuesday but was optioned to Richmond because the team needed another arm for the bullpen for the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday night. He will might just make one start again for the Braves, but with Lance Cormier going on the DL Saturday, there is a chance he sticks around with a solid outing Sunday. Consider him nothing more than a NL-only option at this time.
News: Buddy Carlyle pitched one-hit ball over seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday, getting his first big-league win since 1999 with the Braves' 3-1 victory over the Marlins. He allowed just three walks and a hit batsman in the quality start. The right-hander went 7 years, 269 days between wins, the longest among active pitchers until he was farmed out, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Analysis: Carlyle barely had time to savor the win -- just the second of his career -- before he was given the bad news by manager Bobby Cox. "I can't say I'm not disappointed," said Carlyle, who was optioned to Triple-A Richmond between game. "We play the game to be in a clubhouse like this. Obviously, I'm disappointed. But there's nothing I can do about it." He definitely made an impression and might be back if the Braves need another starter.
News: RHP John Smoltz's shoulder is improving, but the 40-year-old isn't sure if he will be able to make his scheduled start Sunday. Smoltz threw a side session before Friday's game. He said he was able to throw all his pitches, but they were lacking some sharpness. "It was OK," Smoltz said. "But come tomorrow, and even closer to Sunday, if I don't have the sharpness then I'm not going to pitch. I'll probably need a couple extra days."
Analysis: If Smoltz isn't ready, manager Bobby Cox said RHP Buddy Carlyle would start Sunday, with Smoltz going Tuesday against Florida. Treat Carlyle as a NL-only stopgap option when he returns to being a starter.
News: Braves SP Buddy Carlyle, coming off his first start of the season Saturday, received some encouraging news Sunday that he will stick around for the time being, according to MLB.com. "We don't need another starter until (June 5)," manager Bobby Cox said. "So yeah, we'll keep Buddy and he can pitch in relief (starting Monday)."
Analysis: The Braves will likely need Carlyle's arm on June 5 in a doubleheader against the Marlins. However, he is just a relief option heading into Fantasy Week 9 (May 28-June 3). Treat him as a NL-only stopgap option when he returns to being a starter.
News: Atlanta suffered its ninth loss in 13 games as Buddy Carlyle, called up from Triple-A Richmond for the start, gave up five runs in four innings Saturday. Carlyle (0-1) made his first major league appearance since May 25, 2005 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his first start since Oct. 2, 1999 for San Diego at Arizona.
Analysis: Carlyle gave up six hits and five runs in four innings, including four runs in the third, when the Phillies sent 10 batters to the plate. Carlyle was 5-2 with a 2.59 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings spanning nine starts for Richmond. This could be a one-and-done for Carlyle, so he is nothing more than a NL-only stopgap option at this time.
News: The Braves optioned RP Joey Devine to Double-A Mississippi on Friday and purchased the contract of SP Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Richmond so he could start Saturday's game against the Phillies.
Analysis: Carlyle was 5-2 with a 2.59 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings spanning nine starts for Richmond. Carlyle might only make one start for the Braves, so he is nothing more than a NL-only stopgap option at this time.
News: The Braves will call up Buddy Carlyle, not Trey Hodges, to start Saturday. Because of an off day next week, Lance Cormier, who needs just one more rehab start, could return to the rotation the next time the Braves have the No. 5 spot up. Carlyle is 5-1 with a 2.22 ERA in eight starts, including a complete game.
Analysis: Consider the Braves' No. 5 fill-in nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues. It might be a one and down, because the No. 5 spot could then be skipped and Cormier could return from the DL and his rehab assignment in early June.
News: Joey Devine might be up only until Saturday, when the Braves will need a fifth starter. The two leading candidates are RHPs Trey Hodges or Buddy Carlyle, both off to strong starts at Triple-A Richmond. Hodges was 2-2 with a 2.06 ERA in seven starts, while Carlyle was 5-1 with a 2.22 ERA in eight starts, including a complete game.
Analysis: Consider the Braves' No. 5 fill-in nothing more than a high-risk option for the deepest of NL-only leagues. It might be a one and down, because the No. 5 spot could then be skipped and Lance Cormier could return from the DL and his rehab assignment in early June.
News: The Braves released LHP Mark Redman and recalled RHP Joey Devine from Double-A Mississippi. The Braves now need a No. 5 starter, which could reportedly by journeyman Buddy Carlyle up from Triple-A on Saturday. He could be one and done in the rotation with Lance Cormier able to return from the DL the next time the No. 5 spot in June.
Analysis: Carlyle is 5-2 with a 2.59 ERA in nine Triple-A starts. He struck out six in four abbreviated innings Tuesday. Although his numbers look great, he's not a top prospect and would be nothing more than a low-end NL-only option.
News: Manager Bobby Cox said he hasn't decided on a starting pitcher for Tuesday night against San Diego. The rotation spot was left open when LHP Mark Redman was placed on the DL. LHP Oscar Villarreal could start if not needed in relief before Tuesday, but GM John Schuerholz indicated to MLB.com on Sunday the club could either go with Kevin Barry or someone from Triple-A Richmond. Jonathan Johnson, who pitched an abbreviated outing Sunday, Anthony Lerew, Macay McBride, Trey Hodges and Buddy Carlyle have all been pitching well in the Triple-A rotation. Schuerholz told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Barry and Lerew are the top candidates and McBride is not yet an option.
Analysis: Lerew leads the team in innings and is the most intriguing Fantasy flier in deeper NL-only leagues, especially since it will be his day to throw. Whoever gets that call -- we say Lerew -- will be a sleeper in deeper leagues because it's a two-start week for a contending team.

News: The Braves reassigned RHP Buddy Carlyle, LHP Steve Colyer, OF Doug Clark, INF Yunel Escobar, INF Willie Harris and C Corky Miller to their minor league camp on Friday.
Analysis: None of these players should be on Fantasy rosters at this time, while they are not on a major league roster.
News: The Braves invited RHP Buddy Carlyle, LHP Steve Colyer, OF Doug Clark, C Iker Franco and C Corky Miller to attend spring training.
Analysis: None of these players have real Fantasy value on Draft Day because they are more minor-league depth. Miller has an outside chance of being a backup catcher this season with the big club, though.
News: The Marlins optioned RHP Logan Kensing to Triple-A Albuquerque and reassigned RHP Buddy Carlyle, RHP Eddie Gaillard, 2B Mickey Lopez and 3B Scott Seabol to minor league camp.
Analysis: Carlyle is nothing more than a journeyman middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues if he ever saw big league action in 2006. Ignore him on Draft Day.
News: The Marlins agreed to contract terms and offered spring training invitations to OF Matthew Cepicky, OF Mark Little, 3B Lenny Harris, 2B Mickey Lopez, 3B Michael Kinkade, RHPs Buddy Carlyle and Ryan Rupe, and LHP Joshua Stewart. They also extended spring training invitations to LHP Taylor Tankersley and Cs Brad Davis, Brett Hayes and Ryan Jorgensen.
Analysis: All of these players are nothing but spring competitors for a reserve role. Even if they break camp with the Marlins, there role would be too limited to help any Fantasy team.
News: The Dodgers designated right-handed pitcher Buddy Carlyle for assignment. He appeared in 10 games during his two stints with the Dodgers this season, allowing 13 earned runs, 16 hits and four home runs in 14 innings. He was optioned to Triple-A following Friday night's game at Arizona to make room for left-hander Derek Thompson.
Analysis: The Dodgers have 10 days to trade or release Carlyle. If he is on your Fantasy roster, you just haven't bothered to cut him. Do so now.
News: The Dodgers optioned RHP Buddy Carlyle to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room for LHP Derek Thompson, who will start Saturday night's game.
Analysis: Carlyle is not worth owning in most Fantasy leagues.
News: The Dodgers purchased the contract of Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Analysis: Carlyle will be back in the bullpen for Tuesday's game at San Francisco. He has no Fantasy appeal.
News: The Dodgers designated Carlyle for assignment on Wednesday.
Analysis: Carlyle was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. He is expected to clear waivers.
News: The Dodgers optioned Buddy Carlyle to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Analysis: Carlyle might be back at some point, but he is not worth using in any Fantasy league.
News: Among those on the roster for the Dodgers' opener at San Francisco are right-handed pitchers Scott Erickson, Buddy Carlyle and Steve Schmoll, and lefty Kelly Wunsch. The Dodgers purchased the contracts of the four from the minor leagues Saturday.
Analysis: Carlyle is only around to provide bullpen depth. He will be the mopup man in blowouts.
