(4/26/2013) The Indians are expected to assign first baseman Matt LaPorta to Triple-A within the next week after beginning the year in extended spring training.

"He's still coming back from the hip procedure and he had a minor setback with a wrist injury, but he's been playing games in extended spring training and we'll send him to Columbus in the next week or so," Indians director of player development Ross Atkins told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

LaPorta is a career .238/.301/.393 hitter in 1,068 plate appearances with the Indians.

(3/11/2013) The Indians reassigned first baseman Matt LaPorta to minor league camp Monday. LaPorta hasn't appeared in a spring game because of his surgically repaired hip.

LaPorta feels 'million times better'

(2/10/2013) Indians first baseman Matt LaPorta underwent surgery on his hip last October but told MLB.com on Sunday that he has made some solid progress the last few months. "I feel a million times better," LaPorta said. The 28-year-old enters camp fighting for a starting job in Cleveland and is focusing on remaining healthy. "Any chance I get to put a uniform on is an opportunity," he said. "I'm still here. I'm getting healthy. The main thing is getting healthy. I don't want to put the cart before the horse and be thinking this or that. None of that matters if I'm not healthy."
