David Carpenter allows unearned run in loss vs. Pirates

(8/20/2014) Braves pitcher David Carpenter took the loss Wednesday, giving up one unearned run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning in his team's 3-2 defeat against the Pirates.

Carpenter (4-3) surrendered a leadoff single but retired the next batter before an error put runners on second and third with only one out. A sacrifice fly by the next man up ended the game in walkoff fashion. Carpenter owns a 3.69 ERA and 57:11 K:BB ratio in 46 1/3 innings.

Carpenter, who was designated for assignment last week, pitched three innings of shutout ball in his only appearance with the Angels this season.

(7/2/2014) The Braves have activated right-hander David Carpenter off the disabled list. Carpenter had been out since June 16 with a biceps injury.

Carpenter was struggling before going down. He had given up seven runs in 18 hits in his last 5 1/3 innings pitched as his ERA skyrocketed from 2.42 to 4.23.

"Velocity was good, arm strength was good. Threw a couple of good breaking balls," manager Fredi Gonzalez said of Carpenter's outing Saturday. "When we DL'ed him, we knew that it wasn't anything major. It was right on the bicep. Some weakness there."

Carpenter tossed a scoreless first inning in the start, racking up 22 pitches before finishing the frame. He struck out one batter in the appearance.

(6/25/2014) Braves reliever David Carpenter made it through a bullpen session without incident Tuesday, and is now ready for the next step in his recovery from a biceps injury.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Carpenter will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett Saturday. The expected length of his assignment is not yet known.

Carpenter allowed two hits and one walk while striking out two in a scoreless innings of work before leaving the game. He is listed as day to day moving forward, leaving his status uncertain for Tuesday's game against Philadelphia.

(6/8/2014) Braves pitcher David Carpenter was hit with a loss Saturday, giving up one earned run on two hits and one walk in two-thirds of an inning in his team's 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Carpenter (4-1) recorded the last out of the 10th inning and remained in to pitch the 11th, but after retiring the first batter of the inning, he gave up a single, a walk and another single to give the Diamondbacks a walkoff win. He owns a 4.01 ERA and 29:7 K:BB ratio in 24 2/3 innings.

(5/11/2014) Braves reliever David Carpenter picked up his second save in three opportunities Sunday by tossing a perfect ninth inning against the Cubs. Carpenter struck out one and closed out the 5-2 victory as closer Craig Kimbrel watched. Kimbrel had pitched Friday and Saturday.

Carpenter is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings pitched.

Carpenter (2-0) has been an incredible asset for the Braves in recent weeks, with his last earned run surrendered back on April 12. He owns a 1.93 ERA and 17:4 K:BB ratio in 14 innings.

(4/14/2014) Braves pitcher David Carpenter earned his first save of the season Monday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning in his team's 9-6 win over the Phillies.

The Braves decided to rest closer Craig Kimbrel Monday despite the two offenses coming alive in the eighth and ninth innings, as the team's combined to score 12 runs in the final two innings while passing the lead back and forth. Carpenter was able to slam the door by giving up just one walk and striking out one. He owns a 4.50 ERA and 8:3 K:BB ratio in six innings.

Carpenter will take the spot of Luis Ayala, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an anxiety disorder. Carpenter is 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA through 15 1/3 innings in the minors. He has yet to make an appearance with the Braves this season.

(4/20/2013) The Braves recalled pitcher David Carpenter from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday to fill the roster spot vacated by second baseman Blake DeWitt after he was placed on the disabled list. Carpenter, who was one of Atlanta's final cuts during the spring, posted a 1-2 record and 4.76 ERA over four relief appearances for Gwinnett.

(3/26/2013) David Carpenter and Mitch Stetter are fighting for the final spot in the Angels' bullpen.

The team could also send Garrett Richards to Triple-A to act as an emergency starter, but he has a 1.88 ERA in 14 1/3 innings this spring.

Carpenter has been bothered by a back injury during the spring, which pushed his debut back to March 17.

Stetter was a non-roster invite to camp, and has been strong against lefties over his career. 


Braves begin to finalize roster

(3/26/2013) The Atlanta Braves announced Tuesday that Jordan Schafer has made the opening day roster, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Atlanta optioned infielder Tyler Pastornicky, outfielder Jose Constanza and reliever David Carpenter to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Braves skipper Freddi Gonzalez said Pastornicky, who hit .375 this spring with two homers and 14 RBI over 56 at-bats, remains a valuable piece for the team. He will play second, shortstop and some outfield in the minors. He'll play mostly second after Paul Janish returns. 

The 26-year-old Schafer hit .241 this spring with four stolen bases. The speedster will be a backup outfielder.
