News: FOXSports.com reports the Braves signed reliever Chad Durbin to a one-year, major-league contract on Tuesday. Durbin was in camp with Washington this spring.
Analysis: Durbin had a so-so spring. He did strike out 15 batters in 15 1/3 innings, but he also had a .333 opponents' batting average and 1.57 WHIP. He didn't make the cut for the Nationals' bullpen, but apparently Atlanta saw enough to offer him a spot in its bullpen. Durbin still has marginal Fantasy appeal.
News: The Nationals signed RP Chad Durbin to a minor league deal on Wednesday, according to ESPN.com. Durbin appeared in 56 games for the Indians last year, going 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA.
Analysis: Durbin was hit hard last season, and he may have trouble cracking a fortified Nationals bullpen. Should he win a middle relief role, there will still be better options out there for owners in leagues that use middle men.
News: After posting an 8.38 ERA in 10 appearances during April, Indians RP Chad Durbin has looked much better in May. He has worked two scoreless outings this month, striking out two in 2 1/3 innings while earning the win in both. "He's pitched ahead better than the last couple of outings that he's had, and that's a key for a guy like him," manager Manny Acta told MLB.com. "Earlier he was just pitching behind in the count the whole time. And you can't afford to do that unless you have that overpowering type of stuff."
Analysis: Durbin has been able to collect some wins out of the bullpen the last few seasons and usually sees a save opportunity or two from time to time. The right-hander seems to have straightened out his early season struggles and should be able to get back on track. But since his role limits his Fantasy value, continue to view Durbin as more of a low-end option for the deepest of AL-only formats that utilize middle men at this point.
News: Cleveland RP Chad Durbin (0-1) worked a wild 2/3 of an inning, allowing one run on one hit and two walks in the Indians' 4-3 loss to the Angels in 12 innings on Wednesday. Durbin replaced RP Chris Perez in the top of the 12th inning and allowed two of the first three batters he faced to reach base. He then uncorked a wild pitch to advance the runners before yielding a game-winning sacrifice fly to Jeff Mathis. "Making them hit a ground ball was all I was thinking," said Durbin, who took the loss. "I kept trying to throw sinkers middle-away and let it run off the plate or down, but I wasn't very efficient. I wasn't being aggressive over the plate. That's what a reliever has to do -- attack the zone."
Analysis: Durbin was making his fifth appearance of the season and was tagged for a run in his third outing. In his last four contests, he has collected only four outs as his ERA has sky-rocketed to a woeful 10.13. Durbin has been burdened by high walk rates and the inability to escape trouble in games. Fantasy owners should consider him a marginal Fantasy RP option -- at best -- and should be utilized in AL-only formats for now.
News: MLB.com reports the Indians have finalized their bullpen for opening day. Joining closer Chris Perez will be Chad Durbin, Frank Herrmann, Justin Germano, Vinnie Pestano, Rafael Perez and Tony Sipp.
Analysis: Durbin was only signed after camp opened, but his track record speaks for itself. He posted a 3.80 ERA in 2010 with the Phillies and his vast experience will be needed in Cleveland's bullpen. He might be up for some late-inning situations, but Durbin won't be a regular for save chances. He is still just a Fantasy RP in leagues that use true middle men.
News: Cleveland RP Chad Durbin worked a scoreless inning on Tuesday in his debut with the Indians. He struck out two batters in the B-game against the Reds. "I felt good," Durbin told The Akron Beacon Journal. "I was doing a lot of this stuff at home waiting to sign. The only thing I couldn't get used to was standing on my feet for four hours in spikes. My wife frowned on me walking around the house in spikes. That's tough on the hardwood floors." The Indians would win the game, 7-6.
Analysis: Durbin was signed at the beginning of the month by the Indians and he had been working out his arm over the past week. Durbin went 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA in 64 games last season with the Phillies. Fantasy owners shouldn't have to much interest in Durbin though, as he's likely going to provide depth for the bullpen. Continue to view him as a RP option in deeper mixed-leagues that value true middle men or an AL-only option on Draft Day.
News:The Akron Beacon Journal reports Indians newly-signed reliever Chad Durbin has been working out his arm in anticipation of some game action, but it won't come for at least another week. 'He's thrown a number of bullpens, but it probably will take seven to 10 days before he can pitch in a game,'' general manager Chris Antonetti said.
Analysis: ''Durbin makes us better,'' manager Manny Acta said. ''That's what it's all about. He gives us a good guy to go to in the middle innings.'' Several teams were interested in the 33-year-old when he was in talks to come back to the league, but the Indians moved the quickest. That allowed him to sign with them, but his debut will take a bit more time. He went 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA in 64 games last season with the Phillies. Durbin has minimal Fantasy value as a middle reliever, so don't select him on Draft Day unless the format is very deep, or Al-only.
News: The Cleveland Indians signed reliever Chad Durbin to a one-year contract on Saturday. He will report to the team's training camp in Goodyear, Ariz., for a physical Sunday. The Indians have at least two bullpen openings, one of which will go to Durbin.
Analysis: The Indians were one of several teams interested in the 33-year-old right-hander. Durbin pitched for the Indians in 2003-4 and spent the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. He went 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA in 64 games last season. As a middle reliever, his Fantasy value is limited.
News: According to ESPN.com, the Indians and RP Chad Durbin have agreed on one-year, $800, 000 contract. The deal, which was announced late Friday, could be worth as much as $1.8 million with incentives. Durbin went 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA in 64 appearances for the Phillies last season.
Analysis: Durbin, who has started before in his career, will be used out of the bullpen in Cleveland and should be a well-used option in 2011. He likely won't see many save chances with Chris Perez in town, but the right-hander has posted 60-plus strikeouts each of the last four seasons and could be an intriguing Fantasy option. The deal is pending a physical so keep an eye out for when it is finalized and target Durbin in AL-only formats that utilize middle men on Draft Day.
News:The Sports Xchange reports RP Chad Durbin probably is a long shot to rejoin the Phillies. The free agent reliever is seeking a multi-year deal on the open market, along with a raise from the $2.13 million he made in 2010. But after signing J.C. Romero to a one-year, $1.35 million contract this week, Phillies' general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. hinted his team could be finished with adding parts to his team before spring training. "I'm pretty comfortable with what we have," Amaro said. "I can't say we're (definitely) done, but at some point take look at our club and let it happen on the field."
Analysis: Durbin was an effective arm out of the Phillies bullpen last season, going 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA in 64 games. It's not like Philadelphia wouldn't want Durbin back, but with all the money they have been spending the Phillies probably can't afford to meet Durbin's demands. He is likely to pitch somewhere this season, but Durbin is only going to be a middle reliever and have marginal Fantasy appeal.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin (2-1) earned his second win in a week on Thursday as he pitched 2/3 of an inning against the Cardinals. The Phillies went on to win the game 2-0 in 11 innings. Durbin struck out one and lowered his ERA to 3.23.
Analysis: Durbin has 33 strikeouts and 13 walks in his 39 innings of work for Philly this year. He was on the disabled list with a hamstring injury and didn't return until July 15 and has just three games back. Durbin is a low-end middle reliever beset left for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: The Phillies have activated reliever Chad Durbin (hamstring) from his rehab assignment and the 15-day DL on Thursday. To make room on the roster, they have designated right-hander Nelson Figueroa for assignment. Durbin's presence in the Phillies bullpen allows the team to use all of their relievers. "Guys will be able to throw in roles that they're used to and comfortable with," Durbin told MLB.com. "I think that's most of the battle when it comes to a bullpen, bringing guys in in comfortable situations so they are not in pressure."
Analysis: Durbin said that he does not feel any problems with his hamstring but recognizes how sensitive they are. "Not that I can tell," Durbin said. "But hamstrings are fickle." Durbin had a 3.31 ERA in 29 appearances this season but is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin (right hamstring) struck out two in a scoreless inning for Class A Clearwater on Saturday. It was his first rehab outing with the club. Durbin last pitched for the Phillies on June 23.
Analysis: Durbin is important to the Phillies bullpen, but that doesn't equal a whole lot of Fantasy value. He is 0-1 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 appearances this year with Philadelphia. When healthy and active, he holds value in leagues that utilize true middle men.
News: Philadelphia general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said on Tuesday that two relievers will begin minor-league rehab assignments on Saturday. Right-handed reliever Chad Durbin (right hamstring) and lefty Antonio Bastardo (ulnar neuritis in left elbow) will both throw for Class A Clearwater, reports MLB.com.
Analysis: Durbin has made 29 appearances this season for the Phillies and is 0-1 with seven holds and a 3.31 ERA. He is an important part of the Philadelphia bullpen but won't get any saves. He only has Fantasy value, when activated, in Fantasy leagues that use true middle men.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin (hamstring) is rehabbing in Clearwater, Fla. and could be throwing bullpen sessions and rehab appearances within the next week, according to MLB.com. There is a slim chance he'd be back before the All-Star break, but is more than likely going to return after it.
Analysis: Durbin has a 0-1 record and 3.31 ERA in 29 appearances for the Phillies this year. In 35 1/3 innings he's struck out 31 and walked 11. Pretty good numbers for the righty, but as a middle reliever has very little Fantasy value. He is a filler in leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Phillies reliever Chad Durbin (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, as had been anticipated by the Philadelphia Inquirer on Wednesday. Durbin sustained a Grade 1 hamstring strain on Wednesday against the Indians. Nelson Figueroa was called up to take his spot on the roster.
Analysis: The Phillies initially thought Durbin sustained a major injury on Wednesday, but it appears to be far less severe. He is going to need at least 15 days to recover. Still, Durbin was more of a middle reliever for Philly, so he didn't have much Fantasy value to begin with. He is just a flier in leagues that use true middle men when healthy.
News: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Phillies RP Chad Durbin sustained a Grade 1 hamstring strain on Wednesday against the Indians. He allowed one run and two hits in one inning of work before leaving the game. The Phillies said Durbin will need a stint on the DL.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Phillies RP Chad Durbin has allowed a run in four of his seven relief appearances in June. But Durbin, arguably the most consistent arm in an inconsistent bullpen, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning Sunday against the Twins. One of several Phillies relievers bogged down by injuries a year ago, Durbin has a 3.15 ERA after 2 1/2 months of the 2010 season. The 33-year-old has struck out 31 while walking 11 in a team-high 34 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
Analysis: Durbin has gotten a few saves over the last couple of seasons but has been used only as a middle reliever so far this year. Unless he gets some save opportunities, Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin faced two batters during Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Mets. Durbin relieved Cole Hamels in the seventh with one out and a runner on second. He walked Luis Castillo and struck out Jason Bay before being relieved by Antonio Bastardo. Durbin hasn't allowed a run in his last three outings (2 1/3 innings).
Analysis: Durbin has been a relatively effective arm out of the Phillies' bullpen. He has a 2.49 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings. He has gotten a few saves the last couple of seasons in Philly, but Durbin mostly pitches in middle relief. Consider him more of a flier in NL-only Fantasy leagues that use true middle men.
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Chad Durbin has been arguably the most important piece in the Phillies' bullpen this season. The 33-year-old has a 1.72 ERA in a role where he has bridged the gap between the starting pitchers and the back of the bullpen. Of the four runners Durbin has inherited, none has scored. He has struck out 14 and walked five in 15 2/3 innings.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: RP Chad Durbin agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract with the Phillies worth $2,125,000, a deal that avoided salary arbitration.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: Philadelphia RP Chad Durbin picked up his second save of the season in Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Cubs. Durbin pitched the 12th inning and allowed only a walk against him. He struck out one and his ERA is at 4.53 on the year.
Analysis: Durbin was coming off a game in which he allowed three runs and did not record an out so the save was a nice rebound. He's seen saves in two of his last three appearances but doesn't figure to overtake a struggling Brad Lige as the team's closer anytime soon. Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: The Phillies activated reliever Chad Durbin (back) from the 15-day DL and sent long reliever Rodrigo Lopez to the minor leagues.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career.
News: From The Sports Xchange: RHP Chad Durbin (strained back muscle) pitched one scoreless inning Sunday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley in what he hopes will be his last minor-league rehab appearance. Durbin has been sidelined since July 23.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin (back) will make a rehab appearance at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin made a rehab appearance for Class A Clearwater on Wednesday. Durbin pitched an inning in relief and allowed one base hit and struck out two. He walked one.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: From The Sports Xchange:Chad Durbin (strained back muscle) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday at Class A Clearwater.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Phillies RP Chad Durbin (shoulder strain) long-tossed on Tuesday.
Analysis: When healthy, Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: Phillies relievers J.C. Romero and Chad Durbin were placed on the disabled list Thursday. Romero has a strained left forearm and Durbin strained a muscle in his back. Tyler Walker and Andrew Carpenter were recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill their roster spots.
Analysis: Durbin, a right-hander, is 1-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 42 games. When healthy he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: Philadelphia RP Chad Durbin picked up a rare save on Monday night against the Cubs. He went three innings in relief of Rodrigo Lopez for his first save of his season and third of his career. Durbin gave up just one hit and no runs and struck out two. His ERA is at 4.07 on the year.
Analysis: Durbin has one save per season over the last three years so don't expect another one. Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career.
News: From the The Sports Xchange: RHP Chad Durbin notched a two-out single in the fifth inning, only his second hit in 16 career at-bats. He also tossed a scoreless inning after yielding four runs in two innings to open the season. Pitching coach Rich Dubee attributed the improvement to better mechanics. "His delivery was quiet, his head was quiet, and he had a much better path to home plate," Dubee said. "It was less violent."
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin (hamstring) was able to get back onto the mound on Tuesday against the Reds. Durbin pitched one scoreless inning and didn't allow a hit. It was his first appearance of the spring.
Analysis: Durbin went 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA in a career-high 71 appearances last season, his first with the Phillies. He led NL relievers in innings (87 2/3) and appeared in six playoff games. Consider him nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin (hamstring) was supposed to throw 30 pitches in his return Wednesday, but he never got in the game.
News: The Delaware News Journal reports that Phillies RP Chad Durbin (hamstring) will throw 30 pitches in his return Wednesday.
News: The Delaware News Journal reports that Phillies RP Chad Durbin has a slight strain in his right hamstring.
News: Philadelphia announced a one-year contract with reliever Chad Durbin worth $1,635,000. "Chad came to Philadelphia and in his first season of being a full-time reliever helped solidify what we believe to be one of the best bullpens in baseball," assistant GM Scott Proefrock said. Durbin had requested $1.95 million and had been offered $1.35 million.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Chad Durbin has been a pleasant surprise for the Phillies this season, and with setup man Tom Gordon lost for the season with an elbow injury, Durbin will need to maintain his dominance down the stretch. But he allowed the tying run in the eighth inning Tuesday night in an eventual 4-3 loss to the Dodgers. Durbin, who has a 1.90 ERA in 50 appearances, loaded the bases when Matt Kemp singled, Jeff Kent walked and Manny Ramirez was hit by a pitch. Then, Casey Blake lofted a sacrifice fly that scored Kemp with the tying run.
Analysis: Durbin is a candidate for relief victories, but he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career.
News:Chad Durbin finished off Saturday's game against Pittsburgh for his first save of the season after allowing a run in the ninth. Brad Lidge, who is 28-for-28 in save chances, was unavailable after throwing 24 pitches in one-third of an inning Friday.
Analysis: Durbin is a candidate for relief victories, but he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point. Do not rely on him for saves.
News: The Phillies have relied on Chad Durbin as their primary right-hander in the seventh or eighth inning. Durbin, primarily a starter before this season, appeared in five of the Phillies' six games last week in Washington and St. Louis. Manager Charlie Manuel said he is leery of overusing Durbin, lefty J.C. Romero and even closer Brad Lidge. And with veteran Rudy Seanez (right shoulder inflammation) on the disabled list until Aug. 16, the underbelly of the Phillies' bullpen (recently recalled lefties J.A. Happ and Les Walrond) was exposed for five runs in the final three innings Tuesday night. "I'm concerned about getting to the back end of our bullpen," Manuel said. "Romero has been up a lot, and it's Durbin's first time being in the bullpen and having this big a workload. If we can get to the back end of our bullpen, I feel like we could be good. But getting there, that's where it's important that our starters give us six innings."
Analysis: Durbin is a candidate for relief victories, but he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News:Chad Durbin (4-2) got the victory Sunday despite allowing a run on two hits and a walk in one inning.
Analysis: Durbin is a candidate for relief victories, but he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News:Fernando Tatis hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning, lifting the Mets to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies on Sunday in a game that ended more than seven hours after it started. Jayson Werth hit a two-run shot off Billy Wagner with two outs in the ninth to send the game into extra innings after it was delayed 2 hours, 50 minutes because of heavy rain in the bottom of the eighth. But the Mets avoided another devastating loss in a season filled with them when Tatis connected off Chad Durbin (2-2) with one out in the 12th for his second homer of the season.
Analysis: Durbin is a candidate to stretch out for the rotation, but until that happens -- and it is unlikely right now because the Phillies like the makeup of their bullpen presently -- he is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: With Brett Myers sent to Triple-A to work on his stuff, J.A. Happ is a leading candidate to be called up to start Friday against the Mets. Double-A prospect Carlos Carrasco struggled mightily in his last start, while Class A lefty Joe Savery is clearly not ready, Double-A lefty Antonio Bastardo is on the DL and Double-A lefty Josh Outman has worked mostly as a reliever to date. The Phillies have not stretched out reliever Chad Durbin and likely will keep him in the bullpen, which has been the best in the NL this season.
Analysis: Happ, who is 5-6 with a 3.54 ERA and a .243 batting-average against, is a must-add in all deeper leagues immediately. There is the potential he can be a winner for an offensively potent contender in Philly. Carrasco, Bastardo, Savery and Outman are prospects long term, but they clearly need more work. Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: With Brett Myers slated to start Thursday night in Atlanta, Manuel said the Phils could move right-handed reliever Chad Durbin to the rotation, although he has been a critical part of their best-in-the-league bullpen. The Phillies could summon a starter from the minors, either Triple-A lefty J.A. Happ or Double-A right-hander Carlos Carrasco, their top pitching prospect. Right-hander Kris Benson continues to progress from March 2007 shoulder surgery, although after allowing four runs in four innings Sunday in his first Triple-A start, it seems Benson needs a few more starts before he is ready to return to the majors. "I'll think about what I want to do," Manuel said. "We could do something with Durbin. I think it depends on how far we think Myers can go in our bullpen. If something like that would happen and he could end up helping out in the back end of our bullpen, if we could see that kind of improvement in him, yeah, that might be."
Analysis: Durbin has pitched well in the bullpen, but he hasn't been stretched out, so we don't see him starting in Fantasy Week 14 (June 30-July 6) at this point. Consider him a candidate to become a starter in the second half, but we tend to think the Phillies will solved their rotation issues outside of the organization via trade.
News: Struggling right-hander Brett Myers could soon be out of Philadelphia's starting rotation and back in the bullpen. Manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee talked to Myers before the game Saturday night in Texas, a night after Myers gave up five runs and was pulled without recording an out in the third inning of an 8-7 loss to the Rangers. While Manuel didn't announce any changes, it was clear he and Dubee aren't pleased with how things are going in Myers' return to the rotation. "I talked to (Myers) for quite a while. He's struggling and trying to find it. Whatever he tries doesn't seem to work," Manuel said. "I'll think about what I want to do the next few days and we'll come up with something. We don't have a lot of options." Dubee said Myers' struggles have been a combination of mental approach and mechanical problems. Myers was a starter his first five major league seasons, then began last year in the rotation. He made only three starts before 48 relief appearances, serving as the closer with 21 saves. With an off day Monday, the Phillies could skip Myers' next turn in the rotation, Thursday at Atlanta. Or they could move setup man Chad Durbin into the rotation. Dubee said the Phillies don't have to make the decision before Tuesday. But he's not sure if a return to the bullpen would make Myers more comfortable. "I get different reads on him," Dubee said. "He's a hard read."
Analysis: Since winning consecutive decisions in mid-April, Myers (3-9, 5.84 ERA in 17 starts) is 1-8 in his last 13 starts. The NL East-leading Phillies have won only two of those games. In his lone victory since April, Myers struck out 11 over eight innings in a 12-3 victory over Florida on May 30. He was supposed to start Thursday in Atlanta, but that could now go to Durbin. If Myers is dropped from the rotation he becomes nothing more than an NL-only middle relief option. Durbin, 2-1, 1,47 ERA in 30 games, would become an NL-only candidate to start, but we'd give him at least one start to see if he is worth playing.
News: Phillies RP Chad Durbin, boasting a 1.89 ERA in 33 1/3 innings of relief, continues to thrive out of the bullpen. The former starter often works multiple innings, but he's only once allowed an earned run when pitching one inning or less. "I like the way we have been able to use him in so many different ways," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We can let him throw one or two innings, or we can use him in situations. He might go one inning one day and three or four the next time out."
Analysis: Durbin is a spot starter candidate this season, but his primary role as long reliever makes him nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News: Phillies reliever Chad Durbin has a 1.64 ERA in 22 relief innings this season.
Analysis: Durbin is a spot starter candidate this season, but his primary role as long reliever makes him nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
News:Chad Durbin tossed two scoreless innings in relief Tuesday for Philadelphia.
Analysis: Durbin is a solid middle reliever for NL-only leagues that use true middle men. He also might position himself for a potential rotation spot if he keeps this up. Take that flier if you can use a middle reliever and wait on a potential starter for an expected contender.
News: Phillies P Chad Durbin started Saturday's game against the Tigers and pitched three perfect innings in a game eventually canceled due to rain. "I feel like I can help the team however, whether it's starting, middle relief or the seventh inning," Durbin said. Durbin's versatility should help the Phillies, who used a team-record 28 pitchers last season. Durbin started 19 games last season for Detroit and pitched in 17 others out of the bullpen. He finished 8-7 with one save and a 4.72 ERA.
Analysis: Entering spring training, Durbin was one of several candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation. Though the Phillies haven't officially named the No. 5 starter, it's almost certainly Adam Eaton's job. Eaton is coming off a terrible season, but he's pitched well his last two outings and has a big contract. "I'm not paid to think," Durbin said. "Next time they put my name on the list, I'll pitch." Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues on Draft Day. Even if he makes a start at some point, he doesn't have enough upside to make a difference in Fantasy.
News:Chad Durbin kept his name in the mix for the vacant fifth starter's job with a good outing Monday against the Indians. He allowed three runs on four hits in five innings, striking out one while walking two, to earn the win. "I'll go out there and do what they tell me to do and whatever happens, happens," Durbin said. "If everybody's pitching well and we're healthy, then we're in good shape."
Analysis: Consider Durbin a sleeper in deeper leagues if he gets starts for the offensively potent Phillies, but he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues on Draft Day.
News:Chad Durbin has yet to start a game this spring, which likely means he is ticketed for the bullpen and a spot-starting role with the Phillies.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues at this point.
News: Philadelphia agreed to a $900,000, one-year contract with right-hander Chad Durbin, a 30-year-old who went 8-7 with a 4.72 ERA in 36 games last season with Detroit. He started 19 games and went 2-0 with a 4.18 ERA in 17 relief appearances. Durbin said was excited to join the Phillies, a team he saw overtake the New York Mets in the final days for the division title. "It was a lot of fun watching this team play last year," he said. "Being in the AL I got to start pulling for some favorite teams and this is one of them."
Analysis: Durbin said he hopes to compete for a job in the rotation but would be comfortable in the bullpen if that's where he ends up. "If I'm out in the 'pen that means guys are healthy and that's a definitely good sign across the board," said Durbin, 25-37 with a 5.75 ERA in 114 career games. Consider him a sleeper in deeper leagues if he gets starts for the offensively potent Phillies, but he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues on Draft Day.
News: The Tigers decided not to offer right-hander Chad Durbin a 2008 contract, making him a free agent Thursday. Durbin was 8-7 with a 4.72 ERA in 36 games, including 19 starts.
Analysis: The Tigers' Durbin filled in admirably in the rotation last year, but he is better suited to a relief role. Consider him as such in deeper leagues on Draft Day. In the right situation, he could start and be a sleeper in deeper leagues, but he is not worth counting on in Fantasy at this point.
News: Jim Leyland announced Wednesday Yorman Bazardo will start Saturday in Minnesota, with Kenny Rogers moving back to Monday's series opener in Cleveland. Rookie Jair Jurrjens is expected to pitch Sunday's game. Chad Durbin, who struggled Tuesday, might be back in the bullpen for the rest of the season.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a risky option for the deepest of leagues if he were to get another start down the stretch. With a day off next week, the Tigers won't need a No. 5 starter after Bazardo pitches Saturday, so Durbin will likely be used out of the bullpen in the critical Indians series in Fantasy Week 25 (Sept. 17-23). Consider Durbin nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point.
News: Tigers SP Chad Durbin, making only his second start since returning to the rotation, gave up five runs -- four earned -- and six hits in 2 2/3 innings in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday. He walked none and struck out none, falling to 8-7 in the Tigers' 13-6 loss against the Rangers.
Analysis: With the Tigers not wanting to start Andrew Miller again this season, Durbin likely will stay in the rotation, though his presence only hurts the Tigers' chances of making the playoffs. Don't allow him to do the same for your Fantasy team. Leave Durbin on the waiver wire in mixed leagues.
News: Tigers RHP Chad Durbin, making his first start since Aug. 18, gave up four hits in five scoreless innings against the White Sox Thursday. He also walked one and struck out one. Durbin has bounced between starting and relieving all year, but the Tigers recently removed LHP Andrew Miller from the rotation, creating an opening for Durbin.
Analysis: Thursday's outing likely cements Durbin's position in the rotation for now. Despite the Tigers shuffling him around their pitching staff, Durbin deserves a look in AL-only leagues.
News:The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Chad Durbin will be Detroit's starter Thursday against the White Sox and he has a chance to remain in the Tigers' rotation the rest of the season. Durbin has bounced between starting and relieving all year and manager Jim Leyland acknowledges his appreciation of the fact Durbin has dealt with the shuffling without complaint. The Tigers lost RHP Jair Jurrjens to injury and patched the hole with RHP Virgil Vasquez for one start; but removing LHP Andrew Miller created another vacancy and Leyland says neither Jurrjens nor Miller is likely to start again this season.
Analysis: Durbin is worth looking at in larger AL-only leagues, despite being shuffled in and out of the rotation.
News: The Tigers optioned struggling former No. 1 pick Andrew Miller to Class A, removing him from the rotation. Virgil Vasquez was recalled to start Friday night and Chad Durbin will be moved back to long relief. Next Wednesday will feature start two of Vasquez or a potential return of Kenny Rogers (elbow), who will throw a three-inning simulated game Friday.
Analysis: Durbin is still a candidate for spot starts if Rogers cannot return and Miller doesn't, but right now he is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: Jair Jurrjens (shoulder) said he would not throw for six days, then expected to work his way back on to the roster. Manager Jim Leyland said there was a "strong possibility" he would be used out of the bullpen after spot starting this season. Leyland said RHP Chad Durbin will likely take Jurrjens' spot in the rotation Friday night in the series opener at Oakland.
Analysis: Jurrjen remains on the 15-day disabled list at least until mid-September. Durbin is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues at this point. If he starts Friday in Oakland, he'll be opposed by probable starter Joe Blanton.
News: Tigers starter Jair Jurrjens left Sunday's start vs. the N.Y. Yankees after just 1 1/3 innings with a shoulder injury. He allowed a solo home run to Jason Giambi with one out in the second inning and told catcher Ivan Rodriguez that something was wrong with his shoulder. He was taken out of the game immediately and was placed on the 15-day disabled list after the game. The Tigers had no decision yet as of Sunday afternoon. Their options would be to either move Durbin in from the bullpen, which they did earlier this month when Kenny Rogers went on the DL, or make a move to call up someone from the Minor Leagues.
Analysis: Durbin piched three innings in relief of Jurrjens Sunday, allowing three earned runs while striking out two. Consider him worth a flier in deeper AL-only leagues, but we wouldn't recommend starting him until he is officially named the starter.
News: Chad Durbin (8-6) pitched the 11th to earn the win against the Yankees Friday.
Analysis: Durbin is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues at this point.
News: Durbin was originally listed as the scheduled starter for Friday's game against the Yankees in the opener of a four-game series, but manager Jim Leyland said Durbin will be replaced by Andrew Miller (hamstring). Miller was impressive in his last rehab start on Monday for Triple-A Toledo and will come off the 15-day disabled list then.
Analysis: Durbin is expected to be headed back to long relief, as rookie Jair Jurrgens allowed just one hit in 6 2/3 innings in his start on Tuesday against the Indians and will likely draw another start. Durbin is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only Fantasy leagues at this point.
News: Tigers starter Chad Durbin allowed four runs in five innings in a loss Saturday at the Yankees. He allowed two home runs, four hits and a walk. He struck out one.
Analysis: Durbin will likely remain in the rotation while Kenny Rogers and Andrew Miller are on the DL. He is still nothing more than an AL-only Fantasy option at this time.
News: Chad Durbin (7-5) gave up six runs -- five earned -- six hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings on Monday against the Athletics. "Durbin's control wasn't good and he hung a couple of breaking balls," manager Jim Leyland said.
Analysis: Durbin will get a second start in Fantasy Week 20 (Aug. 13-19), working against probable starter Roger Clemens in New York against the Yankees. He better not hang any of those breaking balls to Alex Rodriguez or the rest of the Bronx Bombers or it might be another short outing for him.
News: Tigers P Chad Durbin, making his first start since June 19, allowed three runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings during Wednesday's loss to the Devil Rays. He walked two and struck out three. Durbin has allowed three or fewer runs in his last four starts.
Analysis: Durbin will likely remain in the rotation while Kenny Rogers and Andrew Miller are on the DL. He is still nothing more than an AL-only Fantasy option at this time. His next scheduled start is for Monday against the A's. He is on track to be a two-start pitcher during Fantasy Week 20 (Aug. 13-19).
News: RHP Chad Durbin will take LHP Andrew Miller's place in the rotation Wednesday against Tampa Bay. Manager Jim Leyland made the decision after LHP Kenny Rogers (elbow inflammation) did not feel ready after throwing Sunday morning.
Analysis: Durbin, who rejoined the club Sunday after his wife gave birth to the couple's first child, is 6-3 with a 4.37 ERA in 14 starts this season. He was solid as a starter earlier this season before going on the DL. He remains an AL-only Fantasy option at this time.
News: The Tigers hoped to give RP Fernando Rodney another rehab appearance at Triple-A Toledo but called him up Saturday because they don't expect RP Chad Durbin to return until Monday. Durbin's wife gave birth to the couple's first child Friday.
Analysis: The reason the Tigers recalled Rodney was because they had to place starter Andrew Miller (hamstring) on the DL. Manager Jim Leyland said he wasn't sure who would replace Miller (hamstring), who was scheduled to start Wednesday against Tampa Bay, but Durbin might be a candidate. He was solid as a starter earlier this season before going on the DL. Either way, he remains just an AL-only Fantasy option at this time.
News:The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Chad Durbin wasn't particularly sharp when he entered the game against the Angels Sunday, hitting Vladimir Guerrero with a pitch while the bases were loaded courtesy of starter RHP Jeremy Bonderman. He then made a fat pitch to Garret Anderson, who drove in two more runs, and a fourth scored on a fielder's choice groundout.
Analysis: Durbin, who warmed up each of the first three innings, followed with a too-late scoreless inning, but like the rest of Detroit's pitchers, right now he's poor to inconsistent. Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues.
News:The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Chad Durbin, who pitched well initially when converted from starter to reliever, had his second straight tough outing Friday night at Anaheim. Durbin got a key third out to close the sixth in relief of LHP Nate Robertson but ran into trouble after getting the first out of the seventh.
Analysis: Durbin made some bad pitches, got a bad break when LF Craig Monroe overthrew the cutoff man on a single allowing the runner to reach second then served up a two-run double to turn a two-run deficit into a five-run Angels' lead. Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues.
News: The Tigers called up Virgil Vasquez from the minors to start in Tuesday's doubleheader. Jordan Tata was a candidate who was passed up and former rotation member Chad Durbin was kept in relief.
Analysis: Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men, while Tata is nothing more than a low-end prospect flier.
News: The Tigers reportedly are leaning toward Virgil Vasquez making a start in the doubleheader Tuesday. Chad Durbin will be kept in the bullpen. Jordan Tata was another option.
Analysis: Vasquez is the one to take the flier on in deeper AL-only leagues apparently. It will be a one-shot deal, but the Tigers are a contender with a great offense. Durbin is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men, while Tata is nothing more than a low-end prospect flier.
News:The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Chad Durbin solidified his position in the Detroit bullpen Wednesday night with a sharp performance in a pressure spot. Durbin was brought in with a man out and runners on first and second -- and hit pinch-hitter Mike Redmond with his first pitch to load the bases. But while Durbin has a starter's assortment and does not hesitate to mix them up, he tried jamming the hitters with his fastball. He jammed DH Jeff Cirillo and got him to foul out on a 1-2 pitch, and then induced CF Lew Ford to fly out to shallow center on an 0-2 pitch that was up in the zone.
Analysis: Durbin has looked decent in his role out of the bullpen with his assortment of pitches. As a part-time starter and long reliever, Durbin is still worth using in AL-only formats.
News:The Sports XChange notes: RHP Chad Durbin made one mistake against Cleveland Tuesday, and it cost his team a 4-3 lead. Durbin threw a fastball for his first pitch of the eighth inning, and pinch hitter Ben Francisco smoked it for a solo home run to left field to tie the score at 4-4. He also walked the leadoff man in the ninth, but the runner was eventually stranded.
Analysis: Durbin has looked decent in his new role out of the bullpen with his assortment of pitches. As a part-time starter and long reliever, Durbin is still worth using in AL-only formats.
News:The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Chad Durbin has been a find in a late-inning role through his first two bullpen appearances. Looking for steady performances in his bullpen, manager Jim Leyland has gotten two straight from Durbin since bumping him from the starting rotation to make room for rookie LHP Andrew Miller. Durbin got a three-inning save in his first relief appearance and Thursday worked two scoreless one-hit innings (seventh and eighth) to keep Texas at bay.
Analysis: Durbin's assortment of pitches is what enabled him to do a creditable job as a substitute starter while LHP Kenny Rogers healed and it's serving him nicely in the bullpen. As a part-time starter and long reliever, Durbin is still worth using in AL-only formats.
News: Andrew Miller and the Detroit Tigers certainly enjoyed interleague play. Miller combined with Chad Durbin for a six-hit shutout, and the Tigers beat the slumping Atlanta Braves 5-0 Sunday night for their seventh straight win -- all on the road against National League teams. Miller (3-1), who was pitching for North Carolina in the College World Series a year ago, called his quick rise to the major leagues "a wild ride." But Leyland stressed Miller is "a work in progress. I like what I see," Leyland said. "I'm not going to get carried away by tonight. He did a good job."
Analysis: Chad Durbin, who lost his spot in the rotation despite having a 6-3 record, finished up to earn his first career save. "Here's a kid that says 'Skip, what can I do for the team,"' Leyland said. "When you have that kind of attitude ... that's a good sign. He didn't do anything to pitch his way out of the rotation. He was hopefully a beneficiary of the situation. I don't want to say he was a victim." As a part-time starter and long reliever, Durbin is worth using in AL-only formats.
News:The Sports Xchange reports RHP Chad Durbin is being bumped to the bullpen as Detroit remakes its starting rotation. Durbin, scheduled to start Monday, will be available to return to the rotation if things don't work out with LHPs Andrew Miller and Nate Robertson, manager Jim Leyland said. "I want to make this perfectly clear: He didn't do anything wrong," Leyland said. "Chad Durbin did not pitch his way out of the rotation. We've been put in some situations recently where we had to make some very important decisions. He was really a victim of the situation."
Analysis: Durbin made 14 starts for the Tigers this season on his way to a 6-3 record and 4.37 ERA. He might get the occasional spot start out of the bullpen, but won't see a full-time starter's role until some goes down with injury. Treat him as a middle relief Fantasy option heading into Week 13 (June 25-July 1).
News: According to MLB.com, Tigers SP Nate Robertson (arm) will come off the 15-day DL on Tuesday to make a start against the Rangers. Chad Durbin will head to the bullpen to make room for Robertson.
News: Chad Durbin (6-3) made a case to remain in the Tigers' rotation by giving up one run on five hits in six innings Tuesday. He struck out five and walked none. In a rotation anchored by Justin Verlander, Kenny Rogers and Jeremy Bonderman, Durbin is competing with Nate Robertson (shoulder, 15-day DL), Mike Maroth and Andrew Miller for two spots. "You go out and you do your work, and the decisions they make are going to be the right decisions no matter what they are," Durbin said.
Analysis: Durbin's rotation spot looks safe at this point. He will be a two-start pitcher sleeper for deeper leagues in Fantasy Week 13 (June 25-July 1), barring a removal from the rotation before then.
News: Chad Durbin (5-3) perhaps hurt his chances of staying in the rotation when Kenny Rogers and Nate Robertson return from the DL in the next couple of weeks. Durbin lasted just 3 2/3 innings Thursday -- matching his shortest outing this season -- allowed eight hits and seemed fortunate to give up just two runs. Detroit's bullpen woes continued when Wilfredo Ledezma replaced Durbin and gave up three runs -- one when he dropped the ball and was charged with a balk and another on a wild pitch -- and then Jason Grilli allowed Corey Hart's solo homer in the eighth to give the Brewers a 6-3 lead.
Analysis: Durbin has a high ERA and will be pitching for his rotation spot in the coming weeks. Consider him an option in deeper leagues when the matchups are right.
News: Tigers SP Chad Durbin gave up three runs on six hits in eight-plus innings during Friday's 3-0 loss to the Mets.. He struck out four and walked one in his longest outing since April 25. It was also the first loss for Durbin since April 9 -- his first start of the season against the Orioles.
Analysis: Durbin rebounded nicely after a poor outing in his last start against the Indians, when he allowed five runs and eights hits in 5 1/3 innings. Durbin has been a decent option for deeper AL-only leagues, especially because he pitches for a contender in Detroit, which has had a productive offense. His next scheduled start is for Thursday against the Brewers.
News: Even when Kenny Rogers (shoulder) returns by late June, the Tigers seem to be leaning toward keeping right-hander Chad Durbin, who has won games but has piled up scads of pitches by the fifth inning in most of his starts. When Rogers returns, it will mean goodbye to one of Detroit's current starters -- and other teams know this. One, Oakland, had a scout at Tuesday's game presumably to evaluate starting left-hander Nate Robertson. Detroit also reportedly has shopped left-hander Mike Maroth, who has been so-so in his comeback from elbow surgery last year.
Analysis: Durbin has been a decent option for deeper AL-only leagues, especially because he pitches for a contender in Detroit, which has had a productive offense.
News: Tigers SP Chad Durbin allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings during Saturday's 9-5 win over the Indians for his fifth victory of the season. He hasn't lost since his first start of the season against Baltimore on April 9, a span of 10 starts. The right-hander allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out one. Durbin gave up a two-run homer to Casey Blake in the third and a solo shot to Grady Sizemore, who had three hits, in the sixth. It was the first time he allowed more than four earned runs in a start since April 14 against the Blue Jays.
Analysis: Durbin was great in May, not allowing more than three earned runs in any of his six starts. However, since he doesn't have that high of a strikeout total, he remains just an AL-only option. His next scheduled start is for Friday against the Mets.
News: Durbin allowed two runs -- one earned -- and three hits in six innings on Monday at Tampa Bay. He also walked three batters in the quality start, but did not figure into the decision.
Analysis: He'll get a second start in Fantasy Week 9 (May 28-June 3) against the Indians over the weekend. His Fantasy value remains limited to AL-only leagues at this point.
News: Tigers SP Chad Durbin went five innings Wednesday against the Angels to notch his fourth win of the season. He allowed eight hits, one walk, two homers and three earned runs. He also had three strikeouts. Durbin has three wins in his last four starts and has not lost since April 9.
Analysis: Durbin has been solid on the hill in his last six starts. He has allowed three runs just once, while allowing two or fewer runs in five starts. He has emerged as a useful AL-only option and it helps his cause that he is backed by the potent Tigers offense. Durbin is scheduled next to take the hill Monday against the Devil Rays. He is also in line to be a two-start pitcher for Fantasy Week 9 (May 28-June 3) with his second start coming against the Indians.
News: Tigers starter Chad Durbin recovered from a poor start in which he issued four walks in the first two innings of Thursday's second game of a doubleheader at Boston. The Red Sox left a total of five runners on base in those two innings. He ended up allowing two runs -- one earned -- and three hits in 5 1/3 innings in the no-decision. He also walked five and struck out four.
Analysis: Durbin will look to bounce back in Fantasy Week 8 (May 21-27) when he'll square off against probable starter Bartolo Colon and the Angels on Wednesday. He is only worth a look in deeper AL-only leagues.
News: The game between the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed because of rain. It was called about 15 minutes before it was supposed to begin. The game will be made up Thursday as part of a day-night doubleheader. The first game will begin at 12:35 p.m. and the night game will be at 7:05 p.m. Tigers SP Mike Maroth and Red Sox SP Julian Tavarez, Wednesday's starters, will now take the mound in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader. Thursday's regular starters, Chad Durbin and Curt Schilling, will pitch the nightcap.
Analysis: The Tigers have a day off on Monday, so Maroth still will likely take the hill Tuesday against the Angels, keeping him on track to be a two-start pitcher for Fantasy Week 8 (May 21-27). He is just a low-end Fantasy SP at this time. Tavarez next start was scheduled for Monday, which now might be pushed to Tuesday, if he can't go on short rest. Keep an eye out for any news on Tavarez. He is just a low-end AL-only option at this time. Schilling and Durbin remain on schedule for their following starts. Schilling is always a must-start, whereas Durbin is a low-end AL-only option.
News: RHP Chad Durbin solidified his tenuous position in Detroit's starting rotation Saturday with a solid six-inning effort. Detroit staked him to a big early lead and RHP Aquilino Lopez worked the final three innings for his first save since2003. It was the second straight start Durbin had protected a lead. "That's a couple of games in a row," he said, "where you just start pounding the zone and getting guys to put it in play. But if you get too far away from your game plan, that's how you let a team back in the game."
Analysis: Manager Jim Leyland noted Durbin was able to use all his pitches for strikes. "When you can throw something other than a fastball when you're behind in the count," the manager said, "you have a chance. But I think we relaxed him a little bit when we scored a couple of runs." He is still not a recommended Fantasy option outside of the largest AL-only leagues, though.
News: Chad Durbin allowed two runs, seven hits and three walks in six innings Saturday afternoon at Minnesota, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Analysis: Durbin, who allowed six runs in each of his first two appearances this season but has been better over the past two weeks, had no trouble pitching with a big lead. He is still not a recommended Fantasy option outside of the largest AL-only leagues, though.
News: Chad Durbin (2-1) gave up two runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings, with three strikeouts and no walks Sunday at Kansas City. He cruised into the eighth with a two-hit shutout but the Royals loaded the bases with three singles and scored a run on Shane Costa's double-play grounder. Tony Pena Jr. then chased Durbin with an RBI double.
Analysis: Durbin stepped up in place of Jeremy Bonderman and ended up getting two starts this week. He remains a very low-end Fantasy starter despite the win, though.
News: Tigers SP Jeremy Bonderman's scheduled start on Sunday against the Royals has been moved back to Tuesday against the Mariners because he has a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. SP Chad Durbin, a former Royal, will start on Sunday against Kansas City.
Analysis: Durbin wasn't expected to make another start until Wednesday against the Mariners, and now will be a two-start pitcher for Fantasy Week 5 (April 30-May 6). He is still not a recommended Fantasy option outside of the largest AL-only leagues.
News: Tigers LHP Nate Robertson and RHP Chad Durbin will swap starting assignments next week, a maneuver manager Jim Leyland can make because Detroit did not play Thursday and has another day off scheduled Monday. "That's what I wanted to do," Leyland said. "I'm not going to go into an explanation." Robertson, who started Wednesday, will have one extra day of rest when he takes the mound Tuesday against Seattle. Durbin, who started Tuesday, will have a full week off before his start next Wednesday. Durbin has made just one excellent start for Detroit as the stand-in for LHP Kenny Rogers, but Detroit has won three of his five starts.
Analysis: Consider Robertson a solid option in all formats, and Durbin should be limited to deep AL-only leagues at this point.
News: Tigers starter Chad Durbin only lasted 3 2/3 innings in Tuesday's game against the Orioles. He allowed two runs and three hits, but walked six. "This was a lucky game for us," said Tigers' manager Jim Leyland. "To walk that many guys."
Analysis: Durbin was making his fifth start of the season, and second against Baltimore. He is 0-1 with an 8.64 ERA in just 8 1/3 innings in two starts against the Orioles. His Fantasy value remains limited to the deepest of AL-only leagues at this point.
News: The game between the Tigers and the White Sox scheduled for Thursday night was rained out. The Tigers will push back Nate Robertson, Justin Verlander and Mike Maroth to start this weekend. Jeremy Bonderman will pitch Monday, followed by Chad Durbin.
Analysis: Bonderman loses his second start this weekend, while Maroth gets to keep his. Bonderman will be a must-start two-start pitcher in Fantasy Week 5 (April 30-May 6). Durbin loses his two-start week for that period. Tigers starters are decent options in most leagues because of the contender they pitch for.
News: Chad Durbin struck out a career-high nine in eight innings as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-2 on Wednesday night. Durbin (1-1), the journeyman right-hander who took Kenny Rogers' spot in the rotation when the veteran left-hander went on the disabled list with a blood clot, gave up just three hits in his 60th career start. He retired the first seven batters and retired the final 10 in order. He allowed no runs while seeing his ERA dwindle down to 6.65.
Analysis: After having three sub-par outings, Durbin sorely needed an outing like Wednesday to get his confidence up and for the team to have confidence that he is the guy to hold down Rogers' spot in the rotation. Despite the strong outing, he remains just a low-end AL-only option. His next start is scheduled for Monday against the Orioles. He gave up six runs in his first outing against the Orioles on April 9. Durbin also could make two starts in Fantasy Week 5 (April 30-May 6) if the team doesn't skip his second start because of an off day.
News: Tigers SP Chad Durbin pitched five innings, allowing three hits, four walks and four runs in a no-decision against the White Sox Friday. Durbin struck out two, but his ERA remained in double-digits at 10.54.
Analysis: Durin's outing Friday was an improvement over his previous two, in which he allowed six runs in each start. The Tigers are committed to Durbin at the time, so he remains just a low-end AL-only option. He has a rematch against the White Sox scheduled for Wednesday.
News: According to MLB.com, Tigers manager Jim Leyland is going to leave SP Chad Durbin in the starting rotation despite two poor outings. Although he is sticking with Durbin, Leyland added that he is throwing too many "hittable" pitches at this time.
Analysis: Durbin has a 12.46 ERA through two starts. While Leyland is sticking with him for now, he will have to get better to keep his job. Durbin's next start is scheduled for Friday against the White Sox. Not a favorable matchup for the righty. Continue to use him in the deepest of AL-only leagues.
News: Tigers SP Chad Durbin allowed six runs and eight hits over four innings during Saturday's start against the Blue Jays. He walked one and struck out two in the no-decision. He now has a 12.46 ERA through two starts.
Analysis: Durbin has been awful in two starts for the Tigers. The team might have to rethink naming him the injury replacement for Kenny Rogers, who is out for at least half the season. Perhaps Andrew Miller could be on his way to the majors. Although it is highly unlikely since he is at Class A right now. Durbin's next start is scheduled for Friday against the White Sox. Not a favorable matchup for the righty. Continue to use him in the deepest of AL-only leagues.
News: Chad Durbin allowed six runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings on Monday at Baltimore in his first start in the majors since 2004. He was getting the nod in place of the injured Kenny Rogers (shoulder). "I thought I'd be a lot more emotional, a lot more nervous than I was," Durbin said. "Maybe afterward I'll think about it. This is one game. I threw a lot of strikes and this is something to take into next game -- maybe just throw some better ones."
Analysis: Durbin took the loss and is now 0-3 with a 10.45 ERA in four appearances at Baltimore. Avoid him in all Fantasy leagues, even if he is given another opportunity.
News: Thanks to a re-shuffling of the rotation thanks to weather issues, Tigers righty Chad Durbin will make his first big league start since Aug. 26, 2004, Monday at Baltimore.
Analysis: Despite his two-start status, Durbin is still a very risky play for Fantasy Week 2 (April 9-15) in all AL-only formats.
News: The Toronto Blue Jays-Detroit Tigers game scheduled for Thursday afternoon was postponed because of cold weather. The game will be made up on Sept. 10 at 7:05 p.m. The Tigers rotation will now go Justin Verlander, Mike Maroth and Jeremy Bonderman over the weekend. Nate Robertson and Chad Durbin will pitch the first two games next week and be two-start pitchers.
Analysis: Verlander, Maroth and Bonderman are solid starts in most Fantasy leagues because of the contender they pitch for. Bonderman keeps his second start this week, thankfull. Robertson is a solid two-start option for Fantasy Week 2 (April 9-15), while Durbin is a risky one.
News: Kenny Rogers is out until at least the All-Star break, leaving the Detroit Tigers to defend their AL pennant without one of their top pitchers. Two days after saying his arm felt tired, Rogers had surgery Friday to remove a blood clot from his left shoulder and repair arteries. "We might have been the only club in baseball with five established starters," Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said. "It's an edge we have here and all we did was lose a little of the edge. We still have a great club with four established starters and a strong bullpen." When the Tigers put Rogers on the disabled list Thursday, Chad Durbin became their fifth starter behind Jeremy Bonderman, Justin Verlander, Nate Robertson and Mike Maroth.
Analysis: Durbin was 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA in three relief appearances with Detroit last year. "I have confidence in Chad Durbin, but can anyone replace Kenny Rogers? No," manager Jim Leyland said. Durbin is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 21 2/3 spring innings. Durbin is nothing more than a low-end option in AL-only play.
News: The Detroit Free Press reports that Tigers SP Kenny Rogers had a blood clot in his pitching shoulder. He underwent surgery on it on Friday and will miss the first half of the 2007 season. The Tigers expect Rogers to being throwing again in six-to-eight weeks, with a target return date of July following the All-Star Break. Chad Durbin will take Rogers' spot in the rotation for now, with Andrew Miller a possible replacement if Durbin falters.
Analysis: Rogers should only be kept in leagues that have DL spots available to owners. If you don't have that option, cut him for a more viable option. Durbin is nothing more than a low-end option in AL-only play, but we'd like to see Andrew Miller get some time. One of the best pitching prospects in baseball, Miller would be worth owning in all leagues, especially if he starts the year hot in the minors. If he gets a shot at the major leagues, make moves to grab him.
News: Tigers SP Chad Durbin allowed five hits, two walks and no runs during 5 2/3 innings Thursday against the Astros. He also had two strikeouts. Durbin wrapped up the spring with a 3-0 record and a 2.08 ERA.
Analysis: Durbin wasn't supposed to start the season in the rotation, but with an arm injury to Kenny Rogers, he will make one start on April 8 at Kansas City. Durbin is an option in deeper AL-only leagues in Fantasy Week 1 (April 1-8), especially with that projected matchup in Kansas City. The long reliever and spot starter is too risky for mixed leagues, though.
News: The Tigers placed Kenny Rogers (2.05 spring ERA) on the 15-day DL to start the season, because of what they're calling a "fatigued arm," according to MLB.com. "I don't think it's a long-term thing," Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told the official website. The move is retroactive to March 25 and the Tigers can activate Rogers as soon as April 9, which would cost him one start. Chad Durbin will make one start in Rogers' place April 8 at Kansas City. The Tigers purchased the contract of left-handed reliever Bobby Seay, who was sent down Monday.
Analysis: Durbin is an option in deeper AL-only leagues in Fantasy Week 1 (April 1-8), especially with that projected matchup in Kansas City. The long reliever and spot starter is too risky for mixed leagues, though.
News: The Tigers cuts Monday kept infielder Neifi Perez and right-handed pitcher Chad Durbin on the team. "He's pitched well for us at Triple A," Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said of Durbin to the Detroit News. "He pitched well for us this spring against good lineups; it looks like he has a knack for pitching. He really earned the spot."
Analysis: Perez is nothing more than a versatile reserve for the Tigers and deeper AL-only Fantasy rosters. Durbin is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever. Ignore them at this point, because of their limited roles.
News: Chad Durbin and Zach Miner didn't make it any easier for manager Jim Leyland to decide who'll get the last spot in the Detroit Tigers' bullpen. "I thought they both actually threw the ball good," Leyland said Saturday. Durbin allowed one run and two hits in four innings, and Miner gave up four runs and four hits in four innings as a Detroit Tigers split squad beat the Houston Astros 7-5.
Analysis: Miner provides the Tigers with a little more versatility because he can step in and pitch long relief or possibly make an emergency start. Regardless of who wins the final job, they would be nothing more than a middle relief option in Fantasy leagues to open the season.
News: Phillies 2B Chase Utley hit his first home run this spring Sunday, a solo shot in the bottom of the first off Tigers starter Chad Durbin. It was the only run the right-hander allowed in three innings.
Analysis: Durbin has a chance to be the Tigers' long reliever, which could make him someone to use as a stopgap in the deepest of AL-only Rotisserie leagues this season.
News: Tigers RHP Chad Durbin got off to a good start in his spring campaign to get noticed. Durbin, 29, is competing for one currently open spot in the Detroit bullpen. He is out of options, so Detroit would have to put him through waivers to send him back to Toledo. And he had a good enough season for the Mud Hens last summer to lead the Tigers to believe he'd be claimed. Durbin worked two scoreless innings in Detroit's Feb. 28 win over the New York Mets. He says all he's worrying about is pitching well. "I can't control those variables," Durbin said of where he might end up. "I tried to when I was young and couldn't control them then. I'm older and can't do it now, either."
Analysis: Durbin made 28 starts at Toledo in 2006. He went 11-8 with a 3.11 ERA and 149 strikeouts. The Tigers have no plans to put him in the rotation, so if he were to make the team, it would be as a middle reliever. In the event that happens, consider him only in AL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: The Tigers purchased the contracts of right-hander Chad Durbin and catcher Mike Rabelo from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday and designated the contract of right-hander Colby Lewis.
Analysis: Durbin was 11-8 with a 3.11 ERA in 28 starts for the Mud Hens. He has no Fantasy value.
News: The Tigers optioned LHP Wilfredo Ledezma to Triple-A Toledo of the IL and assigned RHP Chad Durbin, RHP Lee Gardner, RHP Kevin Hodge, C Brian Peterson, C Max St. Pierre, 1B/DH Josh Phelps, OF Ryan Ludwick and OF Reggie Taylor to their minor league camp.
Analysis: Durbin didn't pitch in the majors last season and he officially looks like a journeyman reliever at this point. Ignore him on Draft Day.
News: Detroit invited RHP Tim Crabtree, RHP Chad Durbin, RHP Lee Gardner, RHP Kevin Hodge, RHP Colby Lewis and LHP Bobby Seay to spring training Wednesday.
Analysis: Durbin didn't pitch in the majors last season and he officially looks like a journeyman reliever at this point. Crabtree, Gardner and Hodge likely won't make the team out of camp. Don't concern yourself with them come Draft Day.
News: Chad Durbin received a invitation to spring training as a non-roster player with the Nationals.
Analysis: Durbin will need to pitch lights out during the spring to earn a roster spot.
News: Durbin was claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Analysis: Durbin might get a start or two with Arizona, but he is not worth using in most Fantasy leagues.
News: The Indians designated Chad Durbin for assignment on Friday. The club has 10 days to trade, release or outright him to the minors.
Analysis: Durbin was ineffective as a starter. He'll likely clear waivers and report to the minor leagues. He could be recalled in September to pitch in middle relief as well.
News: Chad Durbin allowed five hits and five runs in just two-thirds an inning on Thursday against the White Sox.
Analysis: Durbin has allowed five runs in each of his past two starts. He's scheduled to face the Yankees next week. Keep him reserved for this matchup.
News: Chad Durbin allowed just two hits in five shutout innings Sunday against the Twins. He did not factor in the decision.
Analysis: Durbin is 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA in his last six games. He is worth considering in AL-only leagues for favorable matchups.
News: Chad Durbin allowed four hits and three walks in seven scoreless innings on Tuesday against Toronto to improve to 5-4. He also struck out seven batters.
Analysis: Durbin has shown glimpses of the potential he displayed before elbow and shoulder problems set him back. He is still only worth using in larger AL-only leagues when the matchup is favorable.
News: The Akron Beacon Journal notes that Chad Durbin has taken Kazuhito Tadano's spot in the rotation Thursday against Toronto.
Analysis: Durbin compiled a 3-3 record with a 3.46 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Buffalo. Consider picking him up for favorable starts in AL-only leagues.
News: The team's official website reports manager Eric Wedge is considering moving Chad Durbin into the rotation in favor of Kazuhito Tadano. "This is a guy [Tadano] who has primarily been a bullpen guy since we've had him," Wedge said. "You have to take a look at the workload. Between him and Durbin, you have to determine who's better suited to start and who's better suited for the bullpen. That's what we're looking at right now."
Analysis: Jason Davis might get a shot at the rotation spot in September with a strong showing at Triple-A Buffalo. Neither of the triumvirate are useful from a Fantasy perspective.
News: Chad Durbin allowed one earned run on six hits in nine innings against Kansas City Saturday.
Analysis: Durbin had been 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA in his four previous starts. Let him piece together a string of quality starts before picking him up.
News: Right-hander Chad Durbin was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.
Analysis: Durbin might get a spot start this Saturday against Kansas City. He has little Fantasy value.
News: The Indians need an extra starter for Saturday's doubleheader against Kansas City, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Manager Eric Wedge hasn't announced who will make the emergency start, but it's likely the team will promote either Kyle Denney or Chad Durbin from Triple-A Buffalo.
Analysis: Kansas City's offense is so poor that whoever gets the spot start might actually be useful in an AL-only league that allows daily transactions.
News: The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Chad Durbin (shoulder) is expected to have arthroscopic surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder and will miss about a month.
Analysis: Durbin was 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA at Double-A New Britain.
News: Indians manager Eric Wedge will likely plug Chad Durbin into the rotation in place of an ineffective Jeff D'Amico (back).
Analysis: Durbin has a poor 11.77 ERA, but he is better suited to starting as opposed to coming out of the bullpen. He is still not worth using in AL-only leagues as a starter.
News: The Akron Beacon Journal reports that Chad Durbin is not enjoying much success as a starter-turned-reliever this season. "I'm finding out that hitters approach relief pitchers different than they do starter," said Durbin. "Hitters are more aggressive against relievers. And for the relievers, the situations are tighter, with guys on base. I'm learning, but I'm learning the hard way."
Analysis: Durbin has given up three walk-off home runs already this season.
News: Chad Durbin started in place of Jason Stanford (forearm) was touched for six runs in only 1 1/3 innings against Kansas City on Tuesday.
Analysis: Durbin has been awful so far for the Indians. He might find himself back with Triple-A Buffalo before too long. He is certainly not worth any Fantasy consideration.
News: Chad Durbin is expected to start Tuesday against the Royals in place of Jason Stanford (forearm).
Analysis: Durbin might also be called on for next Sunday's start at Detroit if Stanford is not ready, but he is not worth adding to a Fantasy roster.
News: Chad Durbin will begin the season in the bullpen after losing out in the race for the fifth starter job to Jason Stanford.
Analysis: Durbin won't offer any useful Fantasy statistics in a relief role.
News: Chad Durbin started on Wednesday in place of C.C. Sabathia (flu-like symptoms). He allowed five earned runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings at Kansas City.
Analysis: Durbin will likely return to the bullpen. He is not a useful Fantasy pitcher.
News: The Indians recalled Durbin from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday.
Analysis: Durbin might get a few starts in September, but right now he'll be used in middle relief. He's not worth adding to a Fantasy roster.
News: Durbin, who is out with an elbow injury, made his first rehabilitation appearance for Double-A Wichita on Tuesday. "His velocity is up to where it should be, but he's not close to the competitive level he'd expect of himself," general manager Allard Baird told The Kansas City Star. Durbin wasn't much of a Fantasy pitcher even before the injury, so don't expect much from him if he returns this year.
Analysis:
News: Durbin was optioned to the minor leagues by the Kansas City Royals. The team is consisdering bringing up one of four pitchers - right-handers Bryan Rekar, Chris Fussell and Mike MacDougal and left-hander Chris George - to replace Durbin in the starting rotation. None of the four will be solid Fantasy players at this point, although you might want to conisder stashing George on your bench in an AL-only league.
Analysis:
News: Durbin had another subpar outing on Thursday, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks against the Red Sox. "It wasn't disastrous, but I wouldn't call it a positive outing," Tony Muser told The Kansas City Star. Durbin is in danger of losing his spot in the starting rotation, which would decrease his already minimal Fantasy value.
Analysis:
News: According to The Kansas City Star, Durbin has one last chance to keep his spot in the starting rotation. "I'll give him another start, and we'll see what happens," manager Tony Muser said. "We're at the point now where we're trying to win baseball games. If he's not pitching well, that's not a way to win them." Durbin has very minimal Fantasy value at this point, and a demotion would make him virtually worthless. The Royals might promote Chris George from Triple-A Ohama if Durbin is demoted.
Analysis:
News: Durbin assumes the Royals' fourth starter job now that Darrell May is on the disabled list. Durbin still hasn't proven himself at the major-league level, and he's too risky to count on right now.
Analysis:
News: Durbin won his second straight start for the Royals Thursday, improving his record to 2-2. He pitched seven innings and allowed only two earned runs. Durbin might be worth tacking on to your roster if he continues to pitch well. Wait and see how he does in his next start. Although he beat a good Minnesota team for his first win Thursday's victory was over a struggling Devil rays team.
Analysis:
News: It was not a good major league homecoming for Durbin. One day after being called up from Triple-A Omaha, Durbin was charged with seven runs on five hits through four innings. Durbin believes he was pitching better than it showed. "I feel like my stuff was good enough to get people out. No confidence was lost, because when I made my pitches, they didn't hit them. When I made mistakes, Double-A or Single-A guys are going to hit that stuff." Keep Durbin out of your lineup until he learns to minimize his mistakes.
Analysis:
News: Durbin was recalled from the minors and will make his first start Tuesday when the Royals begin a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians. He was 2-2 with a 3.33 ERA in five starts with Omaha and led the PCL with 35 strikeouts. Don't pick him up just yet. Durbin is an unproven pitcher playing for a mediocre team.
Analysis:
News: Was called up to replace Dan Murray, who was sent to AAA. Durbin replaces Laxton in the rotation. He was hit around during his first stint with KC and without more AAA experience, expect more of the same.
Analysis:
News: Has won the 4th starter position. This should be temporary since pitchers with no AAA experience struggle in the bigs. Either Blake Stein or Brett Laxton could take this spot from Durbin.
