Sergio Romo stuck with walkoff loss Monday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9/1/2014) Giants pitcher Sergio Romo was victimized by three singles in two-thirds of an inning to take a walkoff 10-9 loss against the Rockies Monday.

Romo (5-4) surrendered a single to the leadoff batter in the bottom of the ninth, and after a sacrifice sent the runner to second base, a popout to the catcher put Romo one out away from sending the game into extra innings. He couldn't come through, allowing back-to-back singles to end the game. Romo owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 52:12 K:BB ratio in 50 2/3 innings.

Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo to share closer duties moving forward

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/31/2014) Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that relievers Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo will be sharing the closer duties for now, the Bay Area News Group reports.

Casilla coughed up a run despite getting the save Saturday night. He owns a 1.82 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP over 49 1/3 innings of relief. Romo struck out the only batter he faced before Casilla entered the game Saturday. He owns a 3.96 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over 50 innings of work.

Sergio Romo records 23rd save Saturday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8/16/2014) Giants pitcher Sergio Romo picked up his 23rd save Saturday, giving up one hit and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning in his team's 6-5 win over the Phillies.

Romo hadn't received a save opportunity since the end of June before getting the call Saturday. Regualr closer Santiago Casilla has taken losses in back-to-back games and has allowed allowed a run in three straight. It's possible manager Bruce Bochy is leaning toward giving Casilla a break from ninth-inning action, which could open the door for Romo to regain the regular role. Romo owns a 4.34 ERA and 45:11 K:BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings.

Sergio Romo picks up relief win vs. Mets

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/4/2014) Giants pitcher Sergio Romo (5-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and picked up the win Monday afternoon in New York against the Mets.

Romo struck out one and allowed one hit in a scoreless frame, while Pablo Sandoval drove in the go-ahead run on a ground-rule double in the bottom of the frame. He owns a 4.71 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP over 42 innings of relief.

Sergio Romo strings together three excellent appearances

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/16/2014) Giants pitcher Sergio Romo gave up just one hit and walked none in 3 1/3 scoreless innings in his last three appearances before the All-Star break while striking out seven batters.

Romo was removed from the closer role after blowing saves in three of his last five appearances of June, giving up nine earned runs in 4 1/3 innings during that stretch. He's been much better in July, though he did give up two runs in a one-out appearance during the first week of the month. Romo owns a 4.86 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 35:9 K:BB ratio in 37 innings.

Who's next in line to close?

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/8/2014) The funny thing about the closer role is that while innumerable relievers are capable of filling it, only 30 can at any one time, giving those 30 disproportionate value in Fantasy. And while in shallower leagues, 30 is more than enough to go around, in standard 12-team formats, it's a shortage. As a result, anticipating the next to enter the role is well worth your while.

Among all middle relievers, I believe Jake McGee, Jeurys Familia, Sergio Romo, Joaquin Benoit, Neil Ramirez, Brad Ziegler, Jason Grilli and Rex Brothers have the best chance of stepping into the closer role by the end of the month. To read up on them and their chances, check out my latest post to the Fantasy Baseball Today blog.

Sergio Romo picks up relief win Saturday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/5/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo (4-3) picked up a relief win Saturday night against San Diego.

Romo surrendered one hit and one walk while striking out one over one inning of work. Brandon Belt crushed a two-run home run in the 10th inning to give his team the lead for good. He owns a 4.86 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over 33 1/3 innings of relief.

Giants going to closer-by-committee approach

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/29/2014) Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced Sunday he's removing Sergio Romo from the full-time closer's role for the time being. Bochy said he will go to a closer-by-committe approach, which will consist of Jeremy Affeldt, Santiago Casilla and Romo, who will also work in a setup role.

"I think it's time we tweak it a little bit," Bochy said, per MLB.com. "He [Romo] has done a great job. It's fair to say he's having his struggles. We think we can help him late in the ballgame. He'll still be part of the mix, so we're going to back him off a little bit and do it by committee."

Bochy is hoping this move will get Romo back on track.

"He's done that (setup role) before, he's done a great job at it and I think he'll do a great job wherever we use him," Bochy said. "He's fine with it right now. How long this committee thing goes, I can't tell you, but hopefully it gets him going."

Sergio Romo in jeopardy of losing job as Giants' closer?

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/29/2014) Giants manager Bruce Bochy might finally be ready to make a change at closer. After watching Sergio Romo suffer his fifth blown save Saturday against the Reds, Bochy wasn't ready to back Romo as the team's closer after the 7-3 loss.

"Oh, I don’t know. I won’t answer it now," Bochy said when asked if Romo was still the team's closer, per CSN Bay Area. "It’s something I’m sure we’ll talk about here (Sunday). He’s done such a good job for us. I know everybody has their moments. If we have to tweak it, we’ll tweak it. This is not the time to talk about it."

Romo said his confidence isn't wavering despite posting an 18.69 ERA in his last five outings. He has three blown saves in that span.

"I feel I’ve been getting back in the groove again … and today was obviously a setback," Romo said. "It’s legitimately one pitch away. It’s making that last pitch, putting them away. That’s what I’m missing right now. Today was a setback but it doesn’t (affect) my confidence. I’m one pitch away.

"It’s understanding the game, understanding myself and what’s happening. The game adjusts to you, you adjust back."

Sergio Romo blows fifth save as game heads to extras

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/29/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo could not make a late lead stand up for the third time in his last five save chances Saturday against the Reds.

Romo was handed a 1-0 lead in the ninth inning, and gave the lead right back to the Reds. He surrendered a two-run home run to Brandon Phillips to put the Giants down, though the offense rallied to score in the bottom half of the ninth to get him off the hook for the loss and send the game into extras.

Romo allowed two runs on one hit and a walk, which raised his ERA to 5.17 in 31 1/3 innings. He has 22 saves in 27 chances for the season.

Sergio Romo overcomes struggles for save

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/22/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo was shaky again Saturday against the Diamondbacks, but managed to hold on for a 6-4 win.

Romo, who last pitched a week ago when he blew saves on consecutive nights, faced a two-out situation with runners on second and third. Fortunately, he got Paul Goldschmidt to line out to an outfielder to end the game, preserving his 21st save of the season.

Romo is 21 of 25 on save chances this season, but has seen his ERA balloon to 4.91 in 29 1/3 innings.

Sergio Romo given day off after two straight blown saves

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/15/2014) Giants manager Bruce Bochy said closer Sergio Romo will get the day off Sunday against the Rockies after pitching three days in a row. Romo was dealt blown saves Friday and Saturday, as his ERA jumped from 3.00 to 5.08.

"He’s tough enough to handle this and deal with this," Bochy said, per SFGate.com. "The only reason he’s off today is he’s thrown three days in a row."

Sergio Romo blows save, takes loss Saturday vs. Rockies

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/14/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo was stuck with a blown save and a loss Saturday, giving up two earned runs on two hits in one inning of action and striking out one in his team's 5-4 defeat against the Rockies.

Romo (3-3) watched both runs score on an inside-the-park home run by Rockies outfielder Brandon Barnes. It was a discouraging follow-up to Friday's flat performance, in which Romo surrendered five earned runs in another loss and blown save. In two outings, his ERA has risen from 3.00 to 5.08 to go with a 0.95 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB ratio in 28 1/3 innings.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Romo had given up runs in each of his three previous appearances and hadn't pitched for about a week coming into Wednesday's game, but he delivered a textbook save to get back on track. He owns a 3.38 ERA and 19:5 K:BB ratio in 24 innings.

Sergio Romo dodges trouble long enough to record save

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/30/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo got the first two outs of Thursday's ninth inning fairly quickly, but ran into trouble from that point on in trying to close out a win over the Cardinals.

Romo allowed a two-out walk to put the tying run on base, and then Matt Carpenter brought in one of those runs. With the lead cut to one, Romo sat pinch-hitter Shane Robinson down on an infield fly ball to end the game, and a 6-5 Giants win.
