(9/17/2014) Giants pitcher Sergio Romo picked up a win Wednesday, giving up one hit and striking out one in a scoreless inning of work in his team's 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Romo (6-4) threw 12 of his 14 pitches for strikes while delivering his third straight scoreless outing. After struggling in June and losing the closer role, he's performed well over the last month and a half, giving up just two earned runs in 13 1/3 innings since the beginning of August. Romo owns a 3.90 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 57:12 K:BB ratio in 55 1/3 innings.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

He couldn't come through, allowing back-to-back singles to end the game. Romo owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 52:12 K:BB ratio in 50 2/3 innings.

Romo hadn't received a save opportunity since the end of June before getting the call Saturday. Regualr closer Santiago Casilla has taken losses in back-to-back games and has allowed allowed a run in three straight. It's possible manager Bruce Bochy is leaning toward giving Casilla a break from ninth-inning action, which could open the door for Romo to regain the regular role. Romo owns a 4.34 ERA and 45:11 K:BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings.

Who's next in line to close?

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/8/2014) The funny thing about the closer role is that while innumerable relievers are capable of filling it, only 30 can at any one time, giving those 30 disproportionate value in Fantasy. And while in shallower leagues, 30 is more than enough to go around, in standard 12-team formats, it's a shortage. As a result, anticipating the next to enter the role is well worth your while.

Among all middle relievers, I believe Jake McGee, Jeurys Familia, Sergio Romo, Joaquin Benoit, Neil Ramirez, Brad Ziegler, Jason Grilli and Rex Brothers have the best chance of stepping into the closer role by the end of the month. To read up on them and their chances, check out my latest post to the Fantasy Baseball Today blog.

(7/5/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo (4-3) picked up a relief win Saturday night against San Diego.

Giants going to closer-by-committee approach

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/29/2014) Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced Sunday he's removing Sergio Romo from the full-time closer's role for the time being. Bochy said he will go to a closer-by-committe approach, which will consist of Jeremy Affeldt, Santiago Casilla and Romo, who will also work in a setup role.

"I think it's time we tweak it a little bit," Bochy said, per MLB.com. "He [Romo] has done a great job. It's fair to say he's having his struggles. We think we can help him late in the ballgame. He'll still be part of the mix, so we're going to back him off a little bit and do it by committee."

Bochy is hoping this move will get Romo back on track.

"He's done that (setup role) before, he's done a great job at it and I think he'll do a great job wherever we use him," Bochy said. "He's fine with it right now. How long this committee thing goes, I can't tell you, but hopefully it gets him going."

Sergio Romo in jeopardy of losing job as Giants' closer?

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/29/2014) Giants manager Bruce Bochy might finally be ready to make a change at closer. After watching Sergio Romo suffer his fifth blown save Saturday against the Reds, Bochy wasn't ready to back Romo as the team's closer after the 7-3 loss.

"Oh, I don’t know. I won’t answer it now," Bochy said when asked if Romo was still the team's closer, per CSN Bay Area. "It’s something I’m sure we’ll talk about here (Sunday). He’s done such a good job for us. I know everybody has their moments. If we have to tweak it, we’ll tweak it. This is not the time to talk about it."

Romo said his confidence isn't wavering despite posting an 18.69 ERA in his last five outings. He has three blown saves in that span.

"I feel I’ve been getting back in the groove again … and today was obviously a setback," Romo said. "It’s legitimately one pitch away. It’s making that last pitch, putting them away. That’s what I’m missing right now. Today was a setback but it doesn’t (affect) my confidence. I’m one pitch away.

"It’s understanding the game, understanding myself and what’s happening. The game adjusts to you, you adjust back."
