Sergio Romo remains perfect in fourth save

(4/17/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo picked up his fourth straight save to open the season Wednesday, in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers.

Pitching with just a one-run lead and little margin for error, Romo was perfect Wednesday. He retired all three batters in order on 11 pitches, including two via strikeout.

Romo has allowed just one run in seven appearances this season, and it came in his first trip to the mound. He has a 1.29 ERA in seven innings, with three hits and one walk allowed, while striking out four.

(4/13/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo was awarded the win Sunday afternoon against the Rockies.

Romo worked a scoreless ninth, allowing just one hit while striking out one, needing only 10 pitches. Brandon Crawford delivered in the bottom of the ninth with a walkoff home run, giving his team a 4-3 win.

Romo owns a 1.80 ERA and 0.60 WHIP in his first five innings pitched. He is 3 for 3 in save chances.

(4/12/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo downplayed the illness that afflicted him in his last outing, and then went out and proved it by picking up his third save of the season Friday against the Rockies.

Romo pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the 6-5 win, retiring each batter on strikeouts on 17 pitches. He now has three saves in three opportunities, with just one run allowed in four innings of work on two hits.

(4/11/2014) Giants reliever Sergio Romo appeared in his first game in over a week Thursday against the Diamondbacks, but he doesn't appear to have been at full health.  

Romo pitched one scoreless inning of relief and needed just eight pitches to do so while allowing one hit. He might have been able to continue pitching, but he had to be attended to by trainers in the dugout afterwards. He was dealing with stomach cramps, and manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after the game Romo has the flu.

Romo has appeared in just three games this season, and it is not clear if this illness is expected to follow him moving forward. He is likely day to day moving forward, heading into Friday's series opener against the Rockies.

(4/3/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo picked up his second save of the season Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, and this one was a lot easier than the last.

After being taken deep and allowing he tying run to reach base in his first outing, Romo retired the Diamondbacks in order Wednesday. He struck out one batter en route to his second save, in a 2-0 win.

Romo allowed just five home runs last season, so that probably won't be a problem for him after his shaky debut.

(4/1/2014) Giants pitcher Sergio Romo picked up his first save of the season in his team's 9-8 win over the Diamondbacks Monday, giving up a leadoff home run but giving up just one earned run on two hits while striking out one.

The Diamondbacks opened the ninth inning with a home run and a single but couldn't scrape together a second run to tie the game. Romo gave up just five home runs last season while posting a 2.54 ERA and recording 38 saves in his first full-time shot at the closing job.

(2/4/2014) Giants closer Sergio Romo said he's going to try and be a better teammate this season, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Romo wouldn't get into too many specifics, but said he could have handled things better last season. Romo indicated that while he appreciated his teammates, he didn't show them as much as he should have. He added that being in the closer role made him focus more on himself, which isn't what the game is about. 

Romo posted a 2.54 ERA in 60 1/3 innings last year. He saved 38 games in 43 chances.

Romo is 38 of 43 in save chances, with a 2.58 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 59 1/3 innings.

It was Romo's second consecutive successful save after taking his fifth blown save and eighth loss on Sept. 18. He owns a 2.62 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 57:12 K:BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings.

Romo struck out one batter in notching his 36th save. His season ERA now rests at 2.67.

(9/19/2013) Giants closer Sergio Romo entered Wednesday's game against the Mets facing a touch situation, and was unable to put out the fire in a 5-4 loss.

Holding a 4-1 lead with runners on first and second and one out, Romo immediately allowed a leadoff double. He followed that with an RBI single, putting the Mets down just one run. He was able to record the second out of the inning, but not before loading to bases. Mets infielder Josh Satin ended the game with a two-run single, securing a 5-4 loss for the Giants.

Romo has five blown saves in 40 opportunities, with a 2.72 ERA and 1.12 WHIP for the season in 56 1/3 innings of work.

(8/21/2013) Giants closer Sergio Romo picked up his fourth win of the season Tuesday, as he pitched a scoreless top of the ninth in a 3-2 win over the Red Sox.

Romo pitched a low stress inning, picking up three groundball outs on 10 pitches with the game tied 2-2. The Giants went on to win on a walkoff walk by Marco Scutaro.

Romo is now 4-6 with 30 saves and a 2.72 ERA on the season.

The right-handed 30-year-old closer has suffered two losses and one blown save over his last 10 appearances, but also has seven saves over that span. His ERA is at 3.02.

(7/27/2013) Giants closer Sergio Romo (3-5) ran into trouble as he suffered his fourth blown save and took the loss Friday night against the Cubs.

Romo, who entered the game in the ninth with a one-run lead, allowed two runs to score on an error by first baseman Brandon Belt. The right-hander surrendered two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning in a 3-2 defeat. He owns a 2.79 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in 38 2/3 innings of relief.
