Jose Bautista out of Blue Jays' lineup after cortisone shot

(5/24/2015) Blue Jays DH Jose Bautista received a cortisone shot in his shoulder, per Toronto's 590 AM. Bautista is out of the lineup Sunday and will likely miss Monday as well. 

Edwin Encarnacion moves to DH from first base to replace Bautista, with Justin Smoak getting the start at first. 

Munenori Kawasaki also gets his second start of the year second base, replacing Steve Tolleson

Danny Valencia also gets a rest. Chris Colabello moves over from right field to left to replace him. Ezequiel Carrera replaces Colabello in right. 


Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson finally gets a day off Friday

(5/22/2015) Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson will get his first day off this season, as he is being held out of the lineup on Friday against the Mariners. Donaldson has hit well lately, batting .270 with two home runs and seven RBI over his last 10 games, batting solely out of the top two spots in the lineup.

Manager John Gibbons said Donaldson, who has started each of the team's first 43 games this year, has been playing on a "bad calf" and was looking to give him a day off, acording to SportsNet.

Danny Valencia will get the start at the hot corner, while Ezequiel Carrera will move up to the leadoff spot the batting order. 


Blue Jays OF Kevin Pillar gets first day off this year on Wednesday

(5/20/2015) Blue Jays outfielder will be held out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels. Pillar, who has started every game for the Jays so far this year, is really struggling at the plate. He is just 6 for 40 with just one extra-base hit over his last 10 games.

Ezequiel Carrera will handle center field and bat sixth on Wednesday. Pillar should be available as a late-inning option for manager John Gibbons if necessary. 


Blue Jays' Devon Travis held out of lineup

(5/12/2015) Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis is not in the starting lineup on Tuesday. It's the first time in 10 games that Travis hasn't led off or started at second. 

Manager John Gibbons said that it was just a day off for Travis. He admitted that the rookie is a little "banged up" but said he was fine. "He could use a day off," Gibbons said, per the Toronto Star.

Steve Tolleson replaces Travis at second base. It's Tolleson's first start of the year at the position and just his fourth start of the season at any spot for the Jays. Tolleson bats ninth. 

Replacing Travis in the leadoff spot is left fielder Ezequiel Carrera. It's Carrera's first time leading off this season and the first time he's hit higher than seventh in the order. Carrera becomes the Blue Jays' fourth leadoff man of the season. 


Blue Jays to sit Bautista on Monday, start Carrera in left

(5/11/2015) The Blue Jays will sit outfielder/designated hitter Jose Bautista Monday in Baltimore and set their outfield with Chris Colabello in right field, Ezequiel Carrera in left and start Edwin Encarnacion at DH.

Bautista, who has been dealing with a sore shoulder, has started 12 of the last 13 games for the Blue Jays at DH.

Bautista has also struggled against the Orioles starting pitcher for Monday, Ubaldo Jimenez, going 2 for 29 in his career. 

Carrera will make his first start of the season in left, as all six of his starts this season have been in right.

Chris Colabello, who had been manning right field in Carrera's place, moves to left field. He bats sixth. 

The Blue Jays are -120 money line favorites at home against Boston.

Carrera played his first MLB game of 2015 on Saturday, going 1 for 2 with a run scored. He'll bat ninth on Sunday, while Jose Bautista starts his seventh straight game at DH. 


Devon Travis back in Blue Jays' lineup, Ezequiel Carrera starts in RF

(5/2/2015) Second baseman Devon Travis (collarbone) will return to the Blue Jays lineup on Saturday in Cleveland while recently promoted Ezequiel Carrera will make his season debut, batting ninth and playing right field.

Travis was held out of Friday's game to rest a sore collarbone.

Careera gets the nod in right while Jose Bautista continues to serve as the designated hitter to nurse his sore shoulder.

Also, outfielder Michael Saunders will make his first start in left field.

The club purchased the contract of Ezequiel Carrera and Scott Copeland from Triple-A Buffalo. To make room for Carrera and Copeland on the roster, the Blue Jays designated Andy Wilkins and Matt West for assignment.

(4/4/2013) Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said outfielder Ezequiel Carrera was claimed off waivers from the Indians because the team liked his speed and experience off the bench, according to The News Journal.

"He provides some speed and versatility to play all three outfield positions. We’ll see what we got," Amaro Jr. said.

Carrera swiped 11 bases during the spring, which was tops in the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues. 

"I was more aggressive in spring training in trying some things, and the results were the 11 stolen bases," Carrera said. "It’s always been a part of my game, the speed. But I took more chances in spring training, and they paid off.”

Carrera, projected as the fourth outfielder for Cleveland, is batting .286 (12 for 42) through 19 spring games with three RBI and 11 stolen bases.
