Scuffling Eric Sogard out of Saturday lineup

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/17/2014) Slumping Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard is not in the lineup for the Saturday night game in Cleveland. Nick Punto will man the position instead.

Sogard has gone hitless in eight of the last 10 games in which he has had at least one plate appearance. His 3-for-33 slide in May has lowered his batting average from .217 to .172.

A's appear content with middle-infield alignment

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/29/2014) The Athletics are not considering signing shortstop Stephen Drew and moving Jed Lowrie to second base, sources told FOX Sports.

The A's appear comfortable with an Eric Sogard and Nick Punto platoon at second base. Also, some evaluators believe Lowrie might be more of a defensive liability at second base than he is at shortstop.

Eric Sogard to start at second base in Game 1

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10/3/2013) Athletics manager Bob Melvin revealed Thursday that infielder Eric Sogard will start at second base in Friday's Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Tigers.

Sogard played second base exclusively for the first fourth months of the season before alternating between second base and shortstop in August and September. He hit .266/.322/.364 with two home runs, 35 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 368 at-bats during the regular season.

Eric Sogard comes off bench to keep streak alive

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/7/2013) Athletics infielder Eric Sogard was productive off the bench Wednesday at Cincinnati. Sogard, who replaced the injured Alberto Callaspo (forearm) in the fifth inning, singled and had a two-RBI triple in a 6-5 loss.

Sogard pushed his hitting streak to 13 games Wednesday. He is batting .383 (18 for 47) with one home run, one triple, five doubles and nine RBI in that span.

Eric Sogard scores twice in return to lineup

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/31/2013) Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard returned to the team's starting lineup Wednesday after sitting out Tuesday with a sore elbow, going 1 for 3 and scoring two runs before yielding to pinch hitter Alberto Callaspo in the seventh inning.

Sogard, who has hit .273/.337/.380 in 242 at-bats, is expected to play a reserve role after the acquisition of Callaspo.

Eric Sogard has sore right elbow

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(7/30/2013) Athletics infielder Eric Sogard was hit by a pitch in the right elbow Monday and took Tuesday's game against Toronto off, MLB.com reports. Sogard said the issue is slightly sore, but it is nothing that would keep him from being available off the bench.

Sogard, batting .268 on the year, has gone 12 for 31 (.387) over an eight-game hitting streak for the Athletics. He has a homer and six RBI over that span.

Eric Sogard picks up three hits

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/29/2013) Athletics infielder Eric Sogard collected three hits Sunday against the Angels.

Sogard picked up a double and two singles. He finished the game 3 for 4, with two runs scored and two RBI. Sogard increased his slash line to .272/.336/.383 in 235 at-bats.

Eric Sogard hits a long ball

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/22/2013) Athletics infielder Eric Sogard hit his second home against the Angels Sunday.

In the top of the third inning, Sogard hit a Jerome Williams fastball out to right for a two-run shot. He finished the game 2 for 4, with two runs scored and two RBI. Sogard is hitting .264/.333/.370 in 216 at-bats.

Eric Sogard new backup shortstop for A's

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(7/8/2013) Oakland manager Bob Melvin said Monday that with Adam Rosales designated for assignment, Eric Sogard is the new Athletics backup shortstop, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Sogard, batting .261 on the year, has gone 4 for 12 (.333) over his last three games with four RBI and his first home run since April 27, 2012.

Eric Sogard hits first home run

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/7/2013) Athletics utility player Eric Sogard hit his first home run of the season and drove in three during Sunday's 10-4 win over the Royals.

Sogard doubled in a run in the second and hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to help break the game open for the A's. He finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI, improving his batting average to .261 in 199 at-bats.

Eric Sogard producing with everyday at-bats

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/23/2013) Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard tied a season-high with three hits Saturday at Seattle. He had one double and two runs.

Sogard, who has started 11 straight games at second base, is batting .286 (12 for 42) with three RBI, four doubles, five walks and six runs in his last 14 games. He also has four stolen bases in that span.

Eric Sogard slumping after solid start

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/2/2013) Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard is mired in a slump at the plate, going 3 for 23 in his last 10 games. He hasn't collected an extra-base hit since April 15.

The A's have shown a willingness over the past week to play Jed Lowrie at second base with Adam Rosales manning shortstop. If Rosales continues to hit well and the configuration sticks, Sogard could see a further reduction in playing time.

Eric Sogard hitless again

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/26/2013) Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard went hitless again in Thursday's 10-2 loss to the Orioles, going 0 for 2 before coming out for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. Sogard is 0 for 9 in his last five games, dropping his season line to .250/.333/.321.

Eric Sogard has limited Fantasy upside

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/21/2013) I noticed Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard was on the list of top 100 most-viewed players Sunday. With second base not being a strong Fantasy position, I understand the interest.

But surely Fantasy owners will figure out Sogard is a good contact hitter with little power. He also might be able to sustain a favorable on-base percentage, but the upside is limited with the 26-year-old second baseman. He slugged just .418 in 557 minor-league games and hasn't hit above seventh in the A's lineup this season, so it's not like Oakland is counting on him to be a major run producer.

Eric Sogard just misses hitting for cycle

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/17/2013) Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard fell a home run shy of the cycle Tuesday against the Astros. He finished 3 for 3 with one run, one double and one triple.

Sogard, who has made a team-high 11 starts at second base, is batting .297 (11 for 37) with one RBI and two stolen bases through 12 games.

"It looks like the spring training Sogard, the guy who gets a hit every time up," manager Bob Melvin said, per the Contra Costa Times. "He got a good at-bat against a left-hander, too. That was good to see."

Eric Sogard doubles, steals base

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/13/2013) Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard doubled, stole third base and scored on an error in Friday night's game against the Tigers before being removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning.

Sogard has two steals and a .250 average this season. Friday's double was his first extra-base hit of the regular season after a hot spring (.444/.500/.648 in 54 at-bats).

Is Eric Sogard worth a look?

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(4/3/2013) The Athletics are making good on their plan to use Eric Sogard as their starting second baseman against right-handed pitchers. Given that he will get the larger share of starts in the platoon, it seems curious that Sogard is only owned in one percent of the leagues on CBSSports.com.

Based on his minor league stats and limited major league experience, owners can expect a handful of steals and the possibility of a high batting average, but very little power from Sogard. At minimum, though, AL-only points-leaguers should give Sogard a look, as his minor league history is filled wtih excellent strikeout and walk rates.

Sogard won't be a difference-maker, but with semi-regular playing time and some good hitting skills, he should be getting a little more playing time in Fantasy than he is receiving in the early going.

Eric Sogard expected to get platoon at-bats at second

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(3/29/2013) Eric Sogard is expected to get platoon at-bats at second base for the Athletics to begin the season, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Sogard, 26, is having a scorching spring training, as he owns a .480/.536/.700 line with eight doubles and a home run in 56 plate appearances. Right now, he's slated for a platoon with Scott Sizemore, with Sogard getting the lion's share of at-bats as the right-handed half of the platoon.

Sogard is a .190/.237/.302 (49 OPS+) career hitter in the majors, however, and if he comes out of the gate slow, he could lose his playing time quickly.

Eric Sogard stays hot while fighting for starting role

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/23/2013) Athletics infielder Eric Sogard continued to hit in his bid to win a starting role, reaching base in all four plate appearances against the Giants Saturday, including hitting his first home run of the spring. He's hitting .538 in 45 Cactus League plate appearances and has only struck out twice. The outstanding line could land him the starting job at second base.

"He's certainly right in the middle of the mix," manager Bob Melvin told MLB.com. "He was always in there and probably came out of the pack a little bit, but he's a guy that's played for us before, comes to camp trying to win a job, and he's doing everything he can to do that.

Eric Sogard in the mix for A's second base job

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/16/2013) Athletics infielder Eric Sogard is in the mix for the starting second baseman job, according to the Oakland Tribune.

He collected two doubles in four plate appearances during the team's 13-13 tie with the Angels on Saturday.

"Sogard is right in there,'' manager Bob Melvin said. "Maybe he hasn't read his name in the newspaper as much as he should have, but that's my fault. He's always been right in there. He's certainly made a case for himself.''

Sogard's two hits raise his line to .423/.483/.615 this spring, and he's struck out just once in 29 plate appearances.

He's competing with several infielders for the job, including Jemile Weeks, Jed Lowrie and Scott Sizemore.

Sogard lands on disabled list

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(8/10/2012) Oakland shortstop Eric Sogard was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a back strain, retroactive to last Tuesday, the team announced Friday. Sogard, who was promoted from Triple-A Sacramento in mid-July, was replaced on the roster by starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy.
