Mets happy with Greg Burke since recall

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/18/2013) In his first stint with the Mets, reliever Greg Burke allowed six earned runs in 7 1/3 innings before being sent down to Triple-A.

He was recalled last week and has been a pleasant surprise, allowing just one hit and one walk in 2 2/3 innings over the last three appearances.

"In the three games he's pitched since he's been back, I've seen much more confidence in his stuff -- much more confidence in his delivery," manager Terry Collins told MLB.com Saturday. "This is a new thing to him. But I thought the ball is getting more movement to it than it was before. I think his offspeed stuff is better than it was in the beginning."

(5/12/2013) After placing Jeurys Familia on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis, the Mets recalled Greg Burke from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday to take his spot in the bullpen. Burke went 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA over seven games during his first stint with New York earlier this season.

Mets expected to recall Greg Burke

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/11/2013) The Mets are expected to recall reliever Greg Burke from Triple-A Las Vegas, according to ESPN. Burke has a 4.66 ERA with seven strikeouts through 9 2/3 innings of work in the minors.

Manager Terry Collins is looking for additional bullpen depth after he told reporters that his bullpen is overwhelmed due to the the inability of his starters to go deep into games.

"The one thing you really need are those guys that really can go almost every day -- the real durable guys that can give you three or four in a row, an inning at a time,” Collins said.

(4/17/2013) The Mets have optioned reliever Greg Burke to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced.

Burke allowed nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits and three walks in his 7.1 innings with the Mets. Jeurys Familia will take his place on the roster.

Mets shore up bullpen

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/29/2013) The Mets continued shaping their roster for opening day, awarding spots in the bullpen to Jeurys Familia and Greg Burke, ESPN.com reports. Both pitchers, whom are right-handed, are entering their first full season with New York.

Mets to carry two left-handed relievers

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/20/2013) Mets manager Terry Collins said during a radio interview Wednesday on WFAN that the team intends to carry two left-handed relievers. ESPN predicted one of the spots will go to Josh Edgin, while Pedro Feliciano, Robert Carson and Scott Rice vie for the other left-handed role in the bullpen.

ESPN also reported this news likely means there will only be room for either Greg Burke or Jeurys Familia in the team's rotation.

Mets GM upbeat about bullpen

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/20/2013) The New York Post reports Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is optimistic the team's bullpen will be much better in 2013 after he has seen promising performances this spring from newcomers Brandon Lyon, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchison, Greg Burke and Pedro Feliciano. The Mets' bullpen ranked 29th in the majors last season in ERA (4.65).

“I think we have a little more confidence in the bullpen than we had toward the end of spring training last year,” Alderson said. “It’s all about performance in the regular season, but it seems that we have a better assortment of veteran arms and we’ve got several pitchers from both the right and left side coming up through the system to give us a lot more depth and are competing for a spot in the bullpen, so that’s a very different situation than we had last year.”
