Twins place Casey Fien on DL, promote Michael Tonkin

(4/30/2015) The hope of the Twins that key reliever Casey Fien could avoid a stint on the disabled list has been dashed, FoxSportsNorth is reporting. The right-hander has been placed on the 15-day DL with a shoulder injury sustained during his ninth-inning appearance Wednesday against Detroit.

Fien has had two poor performances since his three scoreless, hitless appearances to start the season. His ERA catapulted from 1.93 to 4.35 when he allowed three runs on five hits to the Tigers.

His replacement is fellow righty Michael Tonkin, who has been promoted from Triple-A Rochester. Tonkin pitched in 25 games for Minnesota a year ago and had yielded just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level in 2015.

(4/29/2015) Twins reliever Casey Fien took the loss and was removed from Wednesday's contest against Detroit mid-batter in the ninth inning with a shoulder issue, according to MLB.com.

Fien allowed three runs on five hits over one inning of work before departing. The Twins remain hopeful that Fien will avoid a stint on the disabled list. He is expected to be further evaluated on Thursday.

"Hoping for a good report," Molitor said of Fien, per the Pioneer Press.

Fien has not pitched in a game since making his season debut Thursday at Detroit.

Manager Paul Molitor said Saturday that he doesn't think Fien's shoulder issue is serious. General manager Terry Ryan said that the pitcher's throwing session Saturday "went OK" and hopes he won't need a stint on the disabled list. Fien pitched a scoreless inning in his only appearance during the regular season.

(4/1/2015) The Twins have optioned left-handed reliever Caleb Thielbar down to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

With Thielbar heading down to the minors to start the season, Minnesota's seven-man bullpen will include Glen Perkins, Casey Fien, Brian Duensing, JR Graham, Blaine Boyer, Mike Pelfrey and Tim Stauffer.

(1/16/2015) The Twins have avoided arbitration with third baseman Trevor Plouffe, shortstop Eduardo Nunez, and reliever Casey Fien agreeing on 2015 salaries of $4.8 million, $1.025 million and $1.275 million respectively, according to St. Paul Pioneer Press and MLB.com.

Plouffe hit .258 with 14 home runs, 40 doubles and 80 RBI in 136 games in 2014. Nunez, a first-time arbitration qualifier, hit .250/.271/.382 with four homers, 24 RBI and nine stolen bases in 213 plate appearances. Fien posted a 3.98 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP over 63 1/3 innings in 2014.

Those players include: Third baseman Trevor Plouffe, reliever Brian Duensing, outfielder Jordan Schafer, shortstop Eduardo Nunez, pitchers Tommy Milone and Casey Fien.

Jared Burton, Casey Fien could get save chances

(9/7/2014) According to MLB.com, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire could turn to Jared Burton and Casey Fien to close games while incumbent closer Glen Perkins is out with a stiff neck. Perkins is expected to miss a few days with his injury.

Burton was called in to pitch the final innings of each of the Twins' last two games, and he took the loss in both contests. While Burton has converted his one and only save opportunity this season, Fien is 1 for 5 in his attempts to convert saves.

(7/21/2014) Twins pitcher Casey Fien gave up an earned run on two hits in the eighth inning Monday but still picked up a win in his team's 4-3 victory over the Indians.

Fien (5-4) surrendered a two-out single and allowed a runner on second base to come home and tie the game, but the Twins were able to retake the lead in the bottom half of the eighth inning. He owns a 2.34 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB ratio in 42 1/3 innings.

(6/18/2014) Twins manager Ron Gardenhire revealed after Wednesday's game at Boston that he had to go with Casey Fien to close out the game in the 10th inning as closer Glen Perkins was unavailable due to a sore back. Unfortunately, Fien didn't get the job done in a 2-1 loss.

After Chris Parmelee put Minnesota ahead 1-0 in the top of the 10th with a solo home run, Fien retired Dustin Pedroia leading off the bottom of the inning on a fly out to right field. Unfortunately, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli followed with back-to-back solo home runs, sending Boston to the 2-1 win.

Fien (3-4) has suffered losses in each of his last two appearances. His ERA now stands at 2.76.

(6/15/2014) Twins reliever Casey Fien was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Tigers.

Fien came in with the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning. After giving up a leadoff single, Fien managed to get a lineout against the next batter. Victor Martinez managed to reach first on an error, which allowed the runner on first to advance to third. J.D. Martinez then lofted a sac fly, winning the game for Detroit.

The loss dropped Fien to 3-3 this season.

(6/11/2014) Twins reliever Casey Fien recorded the first save of his career Wednesday, as he picked up the final four outs in a 7-1 win over the Blue Jays.

Fien entered the game with runners on the corners and two out in the eighth inning, and got out of the jam with a fly ball out. He closed out the ninth inning with ease, setting the side down in order while striking out one batter, for the first save of his career.

Fien has been a solid middle-relief option this season, posting a 2.30 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 27 1/3 innings of work.

(5/16/2014) Twins reliever Casey Fien was able to return to action Thursday.

Fien had not pitched since May 11 due to an arm injury. He was hit by a line drive while pitching, and suffered a contusion. Fien was able to play catch prior to Thursday's game, and it was determined he was ready to return. Fien tossed a perfect inning during the outing. He did not record any strikeouts. 

Fien has a 2.20 ERA over 16 1/3 innings.

Fien has been sidelined the past few days due to a bruised arm, but is ready to return. He was able to play catch prior to Thursday's game, and will be good to go. He was considered day-to-day prior to Thursday's session.

Fien hasn't pitched in a game since May 11, after he was hit in the arm by a line drive. He was unavailable for Wednesday's game due to the injury, and remains day-to-day. The Twins will not rush him back from the injury. It's still unclear how soon he'll appear in games.

(5/7/2014) Twins pitcher Casey Fien was the losing pitching in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Indians, giving up two hits and one earned run in two-thirds of an inning.

Fien (3-1) gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth, and after the runner was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, the Minnesota reliever induced a ground ball for the second out. He wasn't as fortunate with the next batter, who smacked an RBI single for a walkoff win. Fien owns a 2.63 ERA and 10:2 K:BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings.

(4/24/2014) Twins reliever Casey Fien picked up a win Wednesday after pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his team's 6-4, 12-inning win over the Rays.

Fien (3-0) was perfect in his outing, retiring all seven batters he faced, two by strikeout. He's been excellent since giving up three runs on April 4. Fien owns a 3.00 ERA and 7:2 K:BB ratio in nine innings.

Fien (2-0) worked his way around a base hit and needed just 16 pitches to make it out of the eighth inning unscathed. He owns a 4.50 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP with a 4:2 K:BB ratio over six innings pitched this season.
