Matt Dominguez develops into patient hitter

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/26/2013) Astros manager Bo Porter was very complimentary of third baseman Matt Dominguez Sunday, which came a day after he slugged two home runs against the Athletics.

"He's got great pull power and great carry to the pull and his bat stays in the zone long enough where he can also drive the ball out of the park the other way," Porter said, per MLB.com. "Overall, his development has been outstanding. Coming into the season, we knew what we had defensively and we're now starting to see the power display itself. I always go back to the fact he's established himself as a complete hitter, and he understands he has to use the whole field."

Dominguez has been on a roll lately, belting seven home runs and slugging .631 in his last 18 games. Porter said Dominguez has been taking batting practice "with a purpose" and heeding advice to work counts.

"If you're patient and working the pitcher, you get those pitches you want," Dominguez said. "I try to pull the ball only when I've set the pitcher up to give me a ball inside."

Matt Dominguez shakes off rough night

by Adam Moore | CBSSports.com
(5/10/2013) Astros manager Bo Porter said he has no doubt that third baseman Matt Dominguez will be able to shake off the rough defensive night he had Thursday against the Angels. Dominguez, who entered Thursday's tilt with a MLB-leading .990 fielding percentage, committed three errors in the 6-5 defeat.

"I was joking with Matty," Porter told MLB.com. "I told him when I pulled out of the parking garage last night to drive home that it was snowing outside. I told him the odds of me pulling out of the parking garage and it snowing are just as good as the odds of you making three errors in one game. It was part of the game and it can happen to the best of them. It's a prime example of no matter how good you are, you can make errors."

Dominguez getting his chance

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/21/2013) When folks inside the Astros' organization talk about third baseman Matt Dominguez, everyone talks about his defensive presence. “He’s got an incredible glove -- he reminds me of Scott Rolen by the way he plays third base. The sky’s the limit for him," outfielder Justin Maxwell said, per the Houston Chronicle. Now, the question remains will Dominguez develop offensively to keep a job in the majors? “The one thing I know about Dominguez ... defensively, this guy can win 10 Gold Gloves, because he’s that good defensively,” manager Bo Porter said. “The only question mark would’ve been, is the bat going to play well enough in the big leagues? And he will have every opportunity this year to establish himself as an everyday third baseman.”
