Matt Dominguez still lacking extended hot streak in 2014

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/28/2014) Astros third baseman Matt Dominguez did not take the momentum from his two-homer game of May 18 and run with it. He has just five hits in his last 31 at-bats since then with one run scored and three RBI.

Dominguez has nearly identical numbers as he produced in his breakout season of 2013, though his stat line of ..247/298/.405 is no more than mediocre. He is also striking out at a far greater pace with 42 in 190 at-bats.

Matt Dominguez proving his worth

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/20/2014) How weak is third base? So weak that the ninth-ranked second baseman, Anthony Rendon, ranks third there and the eighth-ranked shortstop, Yangervis Solarte, ranks sixth.

Which makes the lack of interest in Matt Dominguez even more surprising. He entered Tuesday batting .309 (30 for 97) with five home runs and a .900 OPS in his last 26 games.

This is a 24-year-old who hit 21 home runs as a first-year starter last year, and though he won't be contending for batting titles anytime soon, he has maintained a relatively low strikeout rate in both the majors and minors, which suggests he's better than the .241 batting average he showed last year.

Granted, I rank him only 22nd at the position and agree he doesn't have he upside of a Pablo Sandoval, Chase Headley or Brett Lawrie, but in leagues where they're long gone, check the waiver wire for Dominguez. He's only 50 percent owned.

(3/20/2014) Depending on the source, the Astros are either close or not close to concluding a five-year extension agreement with third baseman Matt Dominguez.
