by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com

David Huff blasted by Red Sox

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(9/7/2013) With the Yankees bullpen depleted due to injuries and overuse and Phil Hughes demoted, New York turned to David Huff to start Saturday against Boston. Huff didn't provide any relief for manager Joe Girardi.

Huff was pulled just one out into the fourth inning as he allowed nine earned runs on eight hits and no walks over 65 pitches. He struck out two but allowed a two-run homer to Mike Napoli and a three-run shot to Jonny Gomes.

Huff's ERA rose to 6.45 with the poor outing. The Yankees only gave him the start because they decided they could no longer count on Phil Hughes. They may have to go back to Hughes now. If Huff gets another start, it would come Thursday at Baltimore.

Hughes, who has struggled all year, retired four of five batters before being removed after a nearly two-hour rain delay. Huff came on after the delay and went 5 2/3 innings on just 62 pitches. He gave up a run on five hits with no walks and three Ks.

"He was outstanding," Derek Jeter said. "We needed someone to step up. He deserves all the credit today."
