David Huff picks up third relief win

(8/24/2014) Yankees reliever David Huff (3-1) picked up his third win of the season Sunday afternoon at home against the White Sox.

The left-hander struck out two and allowed two hits in a scoreless inning of work. Brian McCann belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame to end the game. Huff owns a 4.07 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP over 48 2/3 innings of relief.

(7/5/2014) Yankees veteran left-hander David Huff said he would be open to moving from the bullpen to the rotation after outperforming starter Chase Whitley in relief Friday night.

Huff pitched three hitless innings to get the win in Minnesota, striking out three along the way after Whitley was bombed out to the tune of four runs on eight hits, including two home runs. Whitley has struggled in his last three outings.

Asked if he was ready to assume a starting role, Huff told NJ.com, "I think I am. I don't know how long I could possibly go. But I haven't (started) this year yet, so we'd have to see."

Joe Girardi is not ready to make that move. He expressed confidence after the game that Whitley would figure out the command issues that have plagued him lately. He added nothing about the possibility of Huff becoming a starter.

(6/11/2014) Veteran left-hander David Huff has a new team five days after being designated for assignment by San Francisco. He has been traded to the Yankees for cash and will join the team Wednesday in Seattle.

The 29-year-old Huff was a mess with the Giants, particularly in recent appearances. He surrendered 11 runs on 22 hits in his last 13 innings pitched.

(6/6/2014) Though he was designated for assignment earlier in the day, Giants reliever David Huff told MLB.com he would like to remain in the organization.

"There's no hard feelings," Huff said. "I appreciate what this organization has done for me. If I end up clearing waivers and accepting my assignment, I won't be upset about that."

If Huff gets through waivers without being claimed, the Giants can re-sign him and let him pitch at Triple-A Fresno, where he could start. Huff posted a 6.30 ERA in 16 appearances with the Giants, while battling a quad injury.

(5/9/2014) Giants reliever David Huff began his rehab assignment for Triple-A Memphis Thursday, as expected, as he continues to work his way back from a quad strain.

Huff started the game and tossed three scoreless innings, scattering three hits. He struck out one batter while throwing 32 of 46 pitches for strikes.

Huff had a 3.86 ERA in seven innings of work prior to the injury, and it is not yet clear exactly when he is expected back from the disabled list.

"He had to run curves today," manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday. "I haven't talked to Dave Groeschner our trainer yet, to see how he came out of that. Huff feels great, he'll do some pitchers' fielding practice in the outfield and there's a good chance he could begin his rehab on Thursday in Triple-A."

Huff is sidelined with a strained quad. He is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in seven innings.

(4/4/2014) Giants pitcher David Huff, who allowed one run in his previous outing, got back on track and came away with his first win of the season Friday against the Giants.

Huff (1-0) relieved Ryan Vogelsong in the fifth inning with an 8-2 lead. He tossed 1 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out three. 22 of his 30 pitches were called for strikes.

Huff was pulled just one out into the fourth inning as he allowed nine earned runs on eight hits and no walks over 65 pitches. He struck out two but allowed a two-run homer to Mike Napoli and a three-run shot to Jonny Gomes.

Huff's ERA rose to 6.45 with the poor outing. The Yankees only gave him the start because they decided they could no longer count on Phil Hughes. They may have to go back to Hughes now. If Huff gets another start, it would come Thursday at Baltimore.

Huff received high praise from catcher Austin Romine, who said Huff has been "nothing but consistent" for the team. Manager Joe Girardi said he would "play it by ear" when asked who would start next week. Since being recalled August 15, Huff has given up one run in 14 2/3 innings.
