by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/11/2014) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon blew a save Friday against the Braves, but managed to pick up a win.

Rondon entered the game in the top of the ninth with a one run lead. He allowed two hits during one inning of work, including a game-tying single to Christian Betancourt. He struck out one hitter during the appearance and did not issue any walks.

The Cubs found a way to take Rondon off the hook, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning. He moves to 2-3 with the victory.

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/8/2014) Cubs pitcher Hector Rondon was saddled with the loss Tuesday against the Reds.

Rondon came in with the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth. He couldn't seem to get anyone out, allowing three hits, including the game-winner. With men on first and third, Billy Hamilton singled off Rondon, scoring the game-winning run.

Rondon gave up three hits and one earned run during the outing. The loss drops him to 1-3 on the year.

Hector Rondon secures 11th save Tuesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/1/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon gave up a hit during a scoreless ninth inning while striking out one and picking up his 11th save in his team's 2-1 win over the Red Sox Tuesday.

Rondon has secured two saves in two days, with both coming against the Red Sox. The Cubs closer is strengthening his role in the ninth inning after struggling at times during June, and he could pique trade interest if he can continue to have success in July. Rondon owns a 3.62 ERA and 37:12 K:BB ratio 32 1/3 innings.

Hector Rondon earns 10th save Monday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/30/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon picked up his 10th save Monday, giving up just one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to finish off his team's 2-0 win over the Red Sox.

Rondon had his share of struggles in June, giving up five runs in one outing and three runs in another, but he appears to have emerged from the month with the closer role. He owns a 3.73 ERA and 36:12 K:BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings.

Hector Rondon strikes out one in ninth save

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/27/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon bounced back from a subpar performance in his last appearance, as he picked up his ninth save in a 5-3 win over the Nationals.

Rondon worked a perfect ninth in the game, on just 14 pitches. He struck out one batter en route to his 9th save in 11 tries.

Rondon has a 3.68 ERA in 29 1/3 innings, with a 1.26 WHIP and 35 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings.

Hector Rondon blasted in loss vs. Reds Monday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/24/2014) Cubs pitcher Hector Rondon was hit with a loss Monday after giving up five earned runs on four hits and one walk in his team's 6-1 defeat against the Reds.

Rondon (1-2) gave up the go-ahead run on an infield single to Billy Hamilton, and a few batters later Devin Mesoraco put the nail in the coffin with a grand slam. Rondon earned a save in his last appearance, but it remains to be seen how the meltdown will affect his role going forward. He owns a 3.81 ERA and 34:10 K:BB ratio in 28 1/3 innings. Eight of his 12 earned runs allowed have come in his last four appearances.

Hector Rondon save bad news for Neil Ramirez

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/20/2014) The Cubs' murky closer situation became a little clearer Friday when Hector Rondon recorded a save in only his second appearance since his extended absence for an elbow injury. He struck out two in a perfect ninth inning, looking just as dominant as he did in 24 appearances before his disastrous outing June 6 -- his last before his extended absence.

Neil Ramirez, who filled in for Rondon and who many hoped would keep the role given his impressive numbers to date, wasn't even a candidate for the ninth inning in this one. The Cubs used him in the seventh inning. He did fine, issuing one walk and recording one strikeout in a scoreless inning to lower his ERA to 1.00, but how well he pitches is irrelevant in most leagues if he's not getting saves.

He's probably still the Cubs' backup plan, making him worth stashing in deeper leagues where saves are especially scarce, but given how effective Rondon was before the injury, compiling a 1.46 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings, you shouldn't count on him blowing this chance to claim the role all for himself.

Hector Rondon records rare save

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/20/2014) The Cubs have taken great care to manage closer Hector Rondon's workload recently, as he received just his second save opportunity in the last two weeks Friday against the Pirates.

Rondon worked a scoreless ninth inning to close out a 6-3 win. He set the side down in order on just eight pitches, while striking out two batters. Rondon is now 8 of 10 in save chances on the season.

Cubs' closer situation gets all the more confusing

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/2014) Wondering why James Russell got the save in the Cubs' extra-inning win over the Marlins Monday? Yeah, so am I.

Hector Rondon, who has been the closer most of the year, returned from a nine-day absence for an elbow injury with a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit and one walk, but the Cubs clearly didn't reserve him for a save situation, as the road team normally would its closer in an extra-inning game.

So then, they must have been reserving Neil Ramirez, right? After all, he got the save opportunities in Rondon's absence and has the more impressive numbers between the two, leading CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman to suggest on Monday's Fantasy Baseball Today that he may be more than just an injury fill-in.

But when the save opportunity came in the bottom of the 13th inning, it wasn't Ramirez who got the call, but Russell. Ramirez was well rested, too, having thrown just 11 pitches Sunday after sitting out Saturday.

Of course, the Cubs have been extra cautious with Ramirez's workload so far, which may be all there is to it. I still think he's the Cubs' reliever to own here, with Rondon a close second. Hopefully, we'll have some clarity soon.

Hector Rondon has no setbacks with Saturday bullpen

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/14/2014) Cubs pitcher Hector Rondon threw a bullpen session before Saturday's game and had no setbacks with his sore elbow, MLB.com reports.

"Didn't have any setbacks," manager Rick Renteria said. "So we'll see how he feels [Sunday], how he reacts. He looked good."

Rondon could be available to pitch Sunday if he reports improvement in the elbow. He owns a 2.45 ERA and 29:8 K:BB ratio in 25 2/3 innings.

Hector Rondon able to throw off flat ground

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6/14/2014) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon was able to throw off flat ground Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Rondon is dealing with elbow soreness, but believes he'll be fine. It's unclear how soon he'll return to action. Through 25 2/3 innings, he's posted a 2.45 ERA.

Hector Rondon dealing with elbow soreness

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(6/14/2014) Cubs manager Rick Renteria used reliever Neil Ramirez over closer Hector Rondon in the ninth inning of Friday's game against the Phillies because Rondon is battling a sore elbow, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Rondon is expected to test his elbow in a bullpen session Saturday.

Hector Rondon allows three runs in blown save

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/6/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon has been mostly untouchable this season, but he couldn't make a three-run lead stand up Friday against the Marlins.

Rondon entered the game with the Cubs' staff working on a combined shutout, but had trouble closing out the Marlins. He allowed three runs on four hits in the frame, and needed to throw 32 pitches to get out with a tie, while striking out two batters.

Rondon has now blown two saves in nine tries this season, though both ave come in his last four attempts. He has a 2.45 ERA in 25 2/3 innings of work.

(5/30/2014) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon has been placed on the paternity list Friday.

Rondon will need a few days away from the team to be with his family. He should return to action soon. Through 22 2/3 innings, he's posted a 1.59 ERA.

Hector Rondon needs just four pitches for save No. 6

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/25/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon made quick work of the Padres Saturday night, needing only four pitches to secure a 1-2-3 inning for the save and the 3-2 win over the Padres in San Diego.

Rondon bounced back in his first outing since suffering a blown save against the Yankees on May 21. He is 6 for 7 in save chances with a 1.59 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in 22 2/3 innings of relief.

Hector Rondon struggles through first blown save

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/21/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon had a chance to pick up his sixth save of the season Wednesday, but couldn't make a two-run lead stand up against the Yankees.

Rondon, who entered with a 2-0 lead, allowed the Yankees to tie the game on a pair of hits and a walk. He took his first blown save of the season -- and helped extend Jeff Samardzija's winless streak to 16 starts -- while the Cubs went on to lose, 4-2 in extra innings.

Rondon is 5 for 6 on save opportunities this season, with a 1.66 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 21 2/3 innings of work.

Hector Rondon finishes weekend with two saves

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/18/2014) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon worked a scoreless ninth inning during Sunday's 4-2 win against the Brewers to earn his fifth save in as many chances this season.

Rondon allowed a leadoff double to Ryan Braun, but he bounced back to strike out Jonathan Lucroy. He then got Mark Reynolds to pop out to first base before getting Khris Davis to strike out to end the game.

Rondon, who lowered his ERA to 1.33, also recorded a save during Saturday's 3-0 win.

Hector Rondon makes quick work of Brewers

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/17/2014) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon made quick work of the Brewers on Saturday, striking out one and needing just eight pitches to complete a perfect ninth inning for the save. He is 4 for 4 in save chances with a 1.40 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP in 19 1/3 innings.

Hector Rondon a good bet for saves

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/5/2014) Though he hasn't been officially anointed, Hector Rondon sure looked like the Cubs' closer in their three-game series against the Cardinals over the weekend, saving the first two games before blowing the third.

And through he's already been ruled out for Monday's game after pitching in three straight, given all the Cubs have had to deal with in the role, the one blown save probably doesn't overshadow the two converted saves.

They've hinted at using Rondon in the role for a while now. His last five appearances have come in the ninth inning, but with a four-run lead in the first one and a five-run lead in the second. In one of those games, Pedro Strop preceded him, and he was the last Cubs reliever to get a shot at closing before Rondon. He flopped in his only chance, allowing four runs (though just one earned), which is why Rondon probably still has the inside track on the job.

So clearly, you should add him if saves are a big deal in your league. Though either Joe Smith or Ernesto Frieri would be more valuable in the role, because the Angels are undecided between the two, I might actually prefer Rondon to both right now.

Hector Rondon unavailable to pitch Monday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2014) After appearing in all three games this weekend, Cubs reliever Hector Rondon will be unavailable to pitch on Monday, ESPN Chicago reports. Rondon allowed two runs over 2 2/3 innings over the weekend. His ERA went from 0.68 to 1.69 over that span.

Hector Rondon coughs up go-ahead run vs. Cardinals

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2014) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon had an outing to forget and was pegged with the loss at home against the Cardinals on Sunday.

With the game tied, Rondon yielded a two-run single to Yadier Molina with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. He was pulled for Wesley Wright for the final out of the inning. He was charged with two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two in just two-thirds of an inning in a 5-4 defeat.

Rondon saw his ERA balloon from 0.59 to 1.69 after Sunday's loss. Along with three saves, he has a 1.19 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB ratio over 16 innings of relief.
