Cubs closer Hector Rondon blanks Brewers for fifth save

(5/1/2015) Cubs closer Hector Rondon threw a bit of a scare into his teammates and fans Friday, but all was well when he walked off the mound with his fifth save.

Rondon yielded a two-out double to Brewers first baseman Jason Rogers in the ninth after striking out Ryan Braun and Khris Davis. But he induced Adam Lind to ground out to end it.

The right-hander has held opponents without a run in 10 of his 11 appearances this season.

(4/26/2015) Cubs closer Hector Rondon recorded his fourth save Sunday, giving up one hit but striking out two batters in his team's 5-2 win over the Reds.

Rondon has bounced back nicely since blowing a save opportunity for the first time this season last weekend. He's tossed three scoreless innings while giving up just the one hit Sunday and racking up four strikeouts in his last three appearances. Rondon owns a 1.80 ERA and 9:1 K:BB ratio in 10 innings.

(4/18/2015) Cubs closer Hector Rondon had been a picture-perfect pitcher early in 2015, but was far from perfect on Saturday.

Entering having not yielded a run in six outings, he sought his third save with his team leading 6-2 and two Padres on base in the ninth inning. He allowed a double and two singles, the second of which, by Yangervis Solarte, tied the game.

Rondon did induce a Wil Myers groundout with the go-ahead run on second to escape further damage.

(4/14/2015) Cubs closer Hector Rondon was credited with a win after pitching a scoreless top of the 10th inning in Monday's 7-6 win over the Reds. 

Rondon did allow two hits, with Joey Votto hitting a double and Marlon Byrd reaching on an infield single. However, Votto was thrown out in a fielder's choice to third and Rondon was able to get Jay Bruce to strike out for the inning's third out. 

The Cubs won with a game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th. 

In five appearances this season, Rondon has two saves and a win.

(4/12/2015) Cubs closer Hector Rondon earned a save in Sunday's 6-5 come-from-behind win over the Rockies. 

Rondon entered the bottom of the ninth inning moments after the Cubs' offense rallied from behind with three runs in the top half of the inning. Rondon struck out Troy Tulowitski, got DJ LeMahieu to ground out and got Carlos Gonzalez to pop out. 

He gave up a double to left field from Charlie Blackmon. 

It's Rondon's second save of the season. He's yet to give up an earned run.

(4/8/2015) Cubs closer Hector Rondon recorded his first save of the season Wednesday, retiring the side in the ninth to finish off his team's 2-0 win over the Cardinals.

Rendon needed just six pitches to complete the ninth inning, using nothing but fastballs to earn his first save of the season. He'll serve as the team's regular closer in 2015 after posting a 2.42 ERA and racking up 29 saves last season.


Maddon: Hector Rondon will remain Cubs' closer

(2/21/2015) Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters Saturday that Hector Rondon will remain the closer heading into the start of the season, according to MLB.com. Rondon emerged as Chicago's ninth-inning man in 2014, converting 29 of 33 chances.

Madded also noted that he's a believer of using the right reliever in high leverage situations, and called Jason Motte a "force multiplier," able to "fit in a variety of spots" in the bullpen. 

Motte missed the 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He saved 42 games in 2012 for the Cardinals.


Cubs don't feel they 'need' to acquire closer, sticking with Rondon

(11/11/2014) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon had a pretty good run as the team's closer in 2014, converting 29 of 33 save opportunities and posting a 2.42 ERA in 64 appearances. He also had 63 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings.

Rondon's success in the closer's role has Chicago confident he will be able to handle the job again in 2015.

"We feel really good about Rondon," general manager Jed Hoyer said, per CSN Chicago. "He’s got great stuff, great makeup. (A closer is) not something we feel like we need."

(9/24/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon made things interesting during a save attempt Wednesday.

Rondon entered with a two-run lead, and got himself in some trouble. After quickly picking up two outs, Rondon gave up two straight singles. With the tying run on first, Rondon was able to induce a ground out, ending the contest. It was Rondon's 27th save of the season.

(9/20/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon delivered his 26th save Saturday, striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off his team's 8-7 win over the Dodgers.

Rondon has successfully converted his last 12 save opportunities, allowing only one earned run during that stretch while striking out 12 and walking two in 15 innings. He owns a 2.58 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 61:15 K:BB ratio in 59 1/3 innings.

Rondon has allowed just one earned run in his last 15 innings, but after going 22 innings without walking a batter, he's issued a walk in back-to-back appearances. The closer owns a 2.62 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 60:15 K:BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings.

Rondon entered with a three-run lead, and was able to shut the door without any issues. He tossed a perfect inning, notching one strikeout. He threw 13 pitches during the outing, eight of which were strikes. Rondon lowered his ERA to 2.75.

(8/24/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon picked up his 21st save Sunday, striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off his team's 2-1 win over the Orioles.

The Cubs gave up just one hit as a team Sunday, and Rondon needed just eight pitches for the second straight appearance to rack up the final three outs and send the team home with a win. He owns a 2.81 ERA and 54:13 K:BB ratio in 51 1/3 innings.

Rondon set the Orioles down in order on just eight innings, while picking up two flyball outs and one groundball out. He has now saved six chances in a row, and is 20 for 24 on the season, with a 2.86 ERA In 50 1/3 innings.

Rondon entered with his team up by a run. He ran into some trouble during the inning. With one out, Rondon allowed two batters to reach via singles. With the tying run on second, Rondon struck out the next batter and induced a groundout to end the game. It was Rondon's 19th save of the season.

(8/18/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon earned his second save in as many days during a 4-1 win Monday against the Mets. He now has 18 saves on the season.

Rondon was able to work around a leadoff double to Daniel Murphy to start the bottom of the ninth inning. He got his first out on a strikeout of David Wright. Lucas Duda then hit a deep fly out to center field, which allowed Murphy to tag up and reach third base. But Rondon finished off the win by striking out Travis d'Arnaud.

Monday was the first time in six outings Rondon had multiple strikeouts. He has tossed five straight scoreless outings, allowing just one hit in that span.

(8/17/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon worked a perfect ninth inning during Sunday's 2-1 win against the Mets to earn his 17th save.

Rondon opened the bottom of the ninth inning by getting Daniel Murphy to pop out to shortstop on a 3-2 pitch. Lucas Duda grounded out to first base after two pitches and Eric Campbell ended the game with a strikeout. 

Rondon has three saves since Aug. 12 and has not allowed a run, hit or walk in four straight outings.

Rondon tossed a perfect inning of work. He did not notch any strikeouts during the appearance. Rondon induced a flyout and two groundouts over one inning. His ERA fell to 3.38 following the outing.

Rondon (3-4) pitched the top of the 10th inning after the Cubs tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. He retired the first batter he faced before surrendering three straight singles to tie the game. Rondon owns a 3.53 ERA and 48:13 K:BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings.

(8/6/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon blew an 11th-inning save opportunity Tuesday but picked up a win in his team's 6-5, 12-inning victory over the Rockies.

Rendon (3-3) surrendered one earned run on three hits in one inning of action and struck out two, earning him his fifth blown save of the season. The offense was able to score again in the top of the 12th, and the next reliever up protected the lead the second time around. Rendon owns a 3.40 ERA and 48:13 K:BB ratio in 42 1/3 innings.

(7/31/2014) Cubs closer Hector Rondon was not at his best but still managed to pick up the save Thursday afternoon at home against the Rockies.

Rondon allowed back-to-back singles to start the ninth, but settled down with a pair of strikeouts to close out a 3-1 victory. He allowed two hits and no walks while striking out two over a scoreless frame. He has converted 14 saves in 17 attempts, with a 3.35 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 40 1/3 innings.
