Jason Motte save Sunday throws Cubs closer role into question

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/7/2015) Joe Maddon declared Saturday that his removal of closer Hector Rondon from a save situation did not signal his loss of that role.

Well, Rondon did not come out to pitch the ninth for the Cubs on Sunday - he had already thrown a scoreless eighth. Jason Motte earned the save instead.

Since Pedro Strop finished the game Saturday, it remains to be seen which one of those three is now the closer or if Maddon is opting for a by-committee approach.

Motte, who won in relief Saturday and peaked in 2012 with 42 saves for St. Louis, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth Sunday. He has not allowed a run in his last nine appearances.

Hector Rondon still Cubs closer despite getting pulled Saturday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/6/2015) Joe Maddon has quelled any closer controversy brewing with the Cubs.

Maddon called on Pedro Strop in the ninth inning Saturday to shut down the Nationals after usual closer Hector Rondon walked Anthony Rendon upon entering. But he announced after the game that it was a one-time deal.

"For me, it was about winning the game today," he told the Chicago Tribune. "I am not ordaining anyone new."

Rondon has converted 10 of 13 save opportunities this season. But he has allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks in his last 7 1/3 innings. The free passes were issued in his last two appearances.

Strop, who fanned Clint Robinson and Ian Desmond to snag his second save, had been shaky as well before recording four consective scoreless outings.

Cubs closer Hector Rondon is learning from his mistakes

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/23/2015) Cubs closer Hector Rondon blew a save Friday night in Arizona, his third blown save of the season. The right-hander served up a game-tying two-run home run to Paul Goldschmidt in the 10th inning in the eventual 5-3 Diamondbacks win.

But Rondon, who is in the third season of his career, knows where he went wrong.

"I need better location," Rondon said Saturday, per MLB.com. "I know that pitch ran up a little to the middle [to Goldschmidt]. I think that's why we lost the game yesterday, those pitches."

Manager Joe Maddon has expressed faith in his 27-year-old closer, and a change does not seem to be in the cards, at least for now.

"He knows what he did wrong," said Maddon. "I'll say [to him], 'Hey, listen, everything's cool. I still have a lot of trust and support.' It's one of those things that happens in our game."

Rondon has blown two of his last three save opportunities.
