A's send three down to minor-league camp

(3/16/2014) Athletics first baseman Luke Montz, shortstop Jose Martinez and reliever Fernando Nieve were all reassigned down to minor-league camp following Sunday's Cactus League loss to the Reds, the Bay Area News Group reports.

Luke Montz could be used as DH in exhibition games

(2/20/2014) Athletics catcher Luke Montz has been limited to catching bullpen sessions following his right shoulder surgery last year, MLB.com reports. He could still see time at first base and as a designated hitter once spring training games start next week.

"It all depends," manager Bob Melvin said. "He could potentially DH, and we'll see how he feels at first."

(9/3/2013) The Athletics announced Tuesday that the team has released catcher Luke Montz, MLB.com reports. 

The 30-year-old backstop went 5 for 28 (.179) for the A's this season over 13 games. He had one home run and five RBI in his first taste of the majors since 2008.

Montz hit just .179 in 28 at-bats for the A's, while starting eight games.

(5/5/2013) Athletics designated hitter Luke Montz made his third start of the season Sunday in New York. Batting seventh, his highest spot in the order yet, Montz delivered an excellent performance. 

Montz went 2 for 4 in the game and belted his first home run. He went deep for a solo shot off Andy Pettitte in the fourth inning. Montz added a double and is batting .273. 

Montz has gone 3 for 11 with two RBI over his first three games for the A's.

(5/1/2013) The Athletics have called up catcher/first baseman/DH Luke Montz from Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced Wednesday.

Montz was hitting .283/.406/.679 for Sacramento with five home runs in 15 games. He'll give the Athletics some punch off the bench with Coco Crisp on the disabled list.
