Marcus Mateo shipped back to Cubs

(3/13/2014) Right-hander Marcus Mateo is back with the Cubs after the Diamondbacks returned the Rule 5 pick back to his original team.

Mateo performed well in exhibition appearances. He yielded one earned runs in four innings, but Arizona determined it did not plan on keeping him on its roster throughout the year.

(12/12/2013) The Diamondbacks selected reliever Marcos Mateo from the Cubs in the Rule 5 draft Thursday. Mateo, 29, had a 1.74 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings in 24 appearances, including two starts, between three minor-league stops last season.
