Patton designated for assignment
(5/21/2010) The Cubs designated RP David Patton for assignment Friday in order to create room on the 40-man roster for recently-signed RP Bob Howry. Patton was 2-1 with a 5.23 ERA in seven relief appearances for Class A Daytona.
(2/11/2010) Cubs RP David Patton will be in camp again this spring, but manager Lou Piniella says it's likely Patton will start the season at Double-A Tennessee, according to The Sports Xchange. Patton was a Rule 5 pick last year, meaning the Cubs had to carry him on the big-league roster all year, even if he wasn't ready. Patton managed to get into 20 games, putting up a 3-1 record with a 6.83 ERA.

Patton intriguing his new brass
(3/24/2009) From the The Sports Xchange: The Cubs say they are "intrigued" by right-hander David Patton, a Rule 5 draft pick. The Reds took Patton in the Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings and traded him to Chicago. Through March 20, Patton had worked in seven Cactus League games, giving up seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. More important, at least in the eyes of manager Lou Piniella, he hadn't walked a batter and had struck out nine. "I'm going to tell you this: He's in the picture here," Piniella said. Patton, 24, is a fastball-curveball pitcher who has impressed the field staff with his aggressiveness on the mound and his willingness to go right after hitters.
