Blue Jays recall Drew Hutchison to start Saturday; Thole optioned

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(8/29/2015) Blue Jays right-hander Drew Hutchison has been recalled to start Saturday's game against the Tigers. Hutchison was sent down to Triple-A Buffalo following his most recent outing, a start on August 16. The Blue Jays did not need a fifth starter up until now, so they moved the young pitcher to the minors to keep him fresh.

Hutchison is 12-2 this year, but he does own a 5.06 ERA over 24 starts with the Jays--a testiment to Toronto's offensive prowess.

Hutchison did make a start for the Bisons since his demotion, allowing two runs on three hits over four innings on Sunday.

To clear room for him on the roster, catcher Josh Thole has been optioned to Triple-A. He is expected to return to the club shortly after rosters expand on September 1.

Blue Jays recall C Josh Thole and option Matt Hague to Triple-A

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(8/23/2015) The Blue Jays have recalled catcher Josh Thole from Triple-A Buffalo. Thole was sent down to the minors in early June, after going 7 for 26 in nine games for Toronto.

His numbers haven't gotten a whole lot better with Buffalo, as he owns a .228 average with no home runs in 45 games.

But, Thole does have plenty of experience in catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who is scheduled to start Sunday against the Angels. So it is likely that Thole will be in the lineup for the series-finale on Sunday.

To clear room on the roster, first baseman Matt Hague was sent down to Triple-A.

In limited playing time as Russell Martin's backup behind the dish, Thole is hitting just .269 (7 for 26) this season. His demotion opens up a roster spot for Dioner Navarro, who was activated from the disabled list.

Russell Martin out, Josh Thole in for Blue Jays on Monday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Josh Thole replaced Martin behind the dish on Monday, as he typically does when knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is on the mound. Expect Martin to return to action on Tuesday.

Gibbons: Dickey won't have personal catcher with Navarro on the DL

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/23/2015) Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters that knuckleballer R.A. Dickey will not have a designated personal catcher while Dioner Navarro is on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury, per the National Post.

Navarro was Dickey's battery mate this season. Toronto called up Josh Thole from Triple-A, who is familiar with Dickey's work. He caught the majority of the knuckleballer's starts during his run with the Mets. Gibbons said he's leaning on having Thole behind the plate catching Dickey on Friday, per Sportsnet.ca.
