Pirates send eight to minors


(3/16/2009) The Pirates reassigned 3B Pedro Alvarez, RP Jeff Sues and C Steve Lerud to Double-A Altoona and sent RP Ronald Uviedo to Class A Lynchburg on Tuesday, while SP Daniel McCutchen, SP Jimmy Barthmaier, SP Juan Mateo, 2B Shelby Ford have been reassigned and are likely heading to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Ford makes impression with homer


(2/25/2009) Pirates 2B Shelby Ford, a non-roster infielder, had a pinch-hit, three-run home run to right field in Wednesday's spring training game against the Phillies. It was his only hit in three at-bats. "I went up there just looking to put a good at-bat together," said the 24-year-old Ford, who hit just 15 homers in three minor-league seasons. "When I hit one, it's really got to be up in the air for me to know it's gone."
