Will Smith takes loss Tuesday vs. Rays

(7/29/2014) Brewers pitcher Will Smith was stuck with a loss Tuesday after giving up four earned runs on two hits and three walks in one-third of an inning in his team's 5-1 defeat against the Rays.

The only out Smith (1-3) was able to record was on a sacrifice after the leadoff man reached base via a walk. Two doubles brought home two runs, and Smith walked the bases loaded before being removed. He owns a 3.72 ERA and 65:24 K:BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings.

(7/19/2014) Brewers reliever Will Smith isn't sure how he injured his back, but woke up on Saturday feeling better. Smith is expected to be "back to normal by Sunday," according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"I played catch and I felt fine; I let a few go," said Smith. "It's way better today."

Smith owns a 3.09 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP over 43 2/3 innings of relief this season.

Smith did not pitch in his usual late-inning role, but the team hasn't made any drastic changes to the bullpen. The injury doesn't seem serious, and Smith could return to action soon.

(6/14/2014) Brewers pitcher Will Smith was awarded a win Saturday after giving up one earned run on a solo home run while striking out two in the eighth inning of his team's 4-2 victory over the Reds.

Smith (1-0) has enjoyed a fantastic season to date, but his first home run of the season came Saturday to put his team in a 2-2 tie. The Milwaukee offense was able to regain the lead in the bottom of the eighth and give Smith his first win of the year as a result. He owns a 1.14 ERA and 40:14 K:BB ratio in 31 2/3 innings.


Brewers' bullpen untouchable right now

(4/29/2014) Six Brewers relievers combined to pitch six scoreless innings in Monday's 5-3, 12-inning win in St. Louis, the latest superb effort by Milwaukee's bullpen. The pen has a 2.18 ERA, third-best in the majors, and opponents are batting .195, lowest in the majors, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Closer Francisco Rodriguez and Will Smith have yet to allow an earned run, while Tyler Thornburg (0.71 ERA), Brandon Kintzler (1.29) and Zach Duke (1.46) have been lights out too.

"It's unbelievable the job the young guys in the bullpen are doing," said Rodriguez, who is 12 for 12 in save chances. "It's tremendous. ... It's an unbelievable first month. Even though it's still early, I like our chances because (my teammates) are hungry. They go out and compete every single day, which is something I'm proud of."

(4/13/2014) Brewers reliever Will Smith earned a rare one-out save Sunday afternoon against the Pirates. The left-hander came in for Kyle Lohse with two outs in the ninth and struck out Pedro Alvarez for the final out of the game.

Smith has yet to surrender a run this season and owns a 1.11 ERA over 6 1/3 innings pitched.

(1/23/2014) With Matt Garza agreeing to a four-year, $52 million contract with the Brewers that doesn't bode well for some of the younger starting pitchers -- Tyler ThornburgJohnny Hellweg, Jimmy Nelson and Will Smith -- who were competing for the final spot in the team's rotation.

"I know it stinks for one of the young guys who was going to be competing for that extra spot, but they’ll have their opportunities," Brewers starting pitcher Kyle Lohse said. "This helps out the rotation a lot, I think. It’s a good thing for us."

(12/5/2013) Though left-hander Will Smith, who the Brewers acquired from the Royals in exchange for outfielder Norhichika Aoki Thursday, appeared to break through as a reliever last year, posting a 2.45 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings over 18 appearances after successfully transitioning in the minors, the Brewers are open to using him in the starting rotation, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"I told him to come to camp as a starter and then we'll see," said general manager Doug Melvin. "He has pitched some good games in relief with a lights-out breaking ball. We'll take a look at him and see where he fits best."

Smith has a 5.48 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 6.1 strikeouts per nine innings in 17 career starts. The Brewers already have Tyler Thornburg, Jimmy Nelson, Johnny Hellweg and Hiram Burgos to compete for their final rotation spot.

Smith has enjoyed moderate success with Kansas City this year, as he owns a 3.86 ERA and 15 strikeouts to just one walk in six appearances covering 16 1/3 innings. Smith will likely return to the Royals at some point this year, and he could be returning to Omaha to stretch out as a starter. He has a 2.88 ERA in 68 2/3 innings, largely as a starter, in Omaha this season.

The left-hander was tagged with a two-spot in the first before surrendering a three-run homer to Mike Aviles in the third. He was charged with his final damage in the fourth and was pulled for Bruce Chen after walking the leadoff batter in the fifth.
