Red Sox make a few roster moves Sunday

(3/23/2014) The Red Sox announced Sunday they reassigned catcher Dan Butler, pitcher Dalier Hinojosa and pitcher Rich Hill to minor-league camp. They also announced pitcher John Ely will start the season in extended spring.

(12/13/2013) The Red Sox have signed pitcher John Ely to a minor-league deal, with an invitation to spring training, according to the Houston Chronicle. Ely only pitched four innings last season before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery. He last pitched in the majors for the Dodgers, making two relief appearances in 2012.

Astros claim Ryan Jackson, remove three from 40-man roster

(11/20/2013) The Astros claimed infielder Ryan Jackson off waivers from the Cardinals Wednesday while also releasing pitcher John Ely and designating outfielder J.D. Martinez for assignment. Infielder Jake Elmore was also claimed off waivers by the White Sox.

Jackson went 0 for 7 in seven appearances with the Cardinals last season while also hitting .278/.352/.346 with three home runs, 34 RBI and nine stolen bases in 442 at-bats with Triple-A Memphis. Ely pitched just four Triple-A innings before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Martinez hit .250/.272/.378 with seven home runs and 36 RBI in 296 at-bats with the Astros last season.

(11/20/2013) The Astros released pitcher John Ely on Wednesday. Ely only made one appearance in 2013 -- for Triple-A Oklahoma City -- and had Tommy John surgery in April.

Ely last pitched in the majors for the Dodgers, making two relief appearances in 2012.

(4/22/2013) Houston pitcher John Ely is expected to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery Wednesday, MLB.com reports. The surgery will be performed by Dr. James Andrews. 

Ely, who failed to earn a rotation spot this spring with the Astros due to a poor showing, made one appearance with Triple-A Oklahoma City and earned a save as he went four innings and allowed only two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

(3/3/2013) Houston rotation candidate John Ely didn't put his best foot forward on Sunday in Grapefruit League action against Pittsburgh. Ely was pulled two outs into his second inning and gave up five runs -- three earned -- over that time on the mound. Ely, who was hitting around 88-91 mph on the radar gun, allowed three hits and walked three. He struck out two and his spring ERA is up at 12.27.

(12/19/2012) The Astros traded for pitcher John Ely on Wednesday, sending minor league starting pitcher Rob Rasmussen to the Dodgers. Ely made two relief appearances for the Dodgers in 2012, but he served exclusively as a starter for Triple-A Albuquerque, going 14-7 with a 3.20 ERA.
