Padres C Derek Norris gets a day off Saturday vs. Dodgers

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/23/2015) Padres catcher Derek Norris is out of the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers. Norris had started each of the last five games, collecting just three hits in 18 at-bats over that stretch.

Rookie Austin Hedges will make just his fourth start of his career, as he will be behind the plate and bat eighth for manager Bud Black.

Padres' Bud Black: Derek Norris has been 'great'

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/21/2015) Padres manager Bud Black prased the work of catcher Derek Norris on offense and defense on Thursday, MLB.com reports.

"He's been great. ... Very good on both sides, throwing out runners," Black said. "He's gotten real big hits for us. He's been doing his part."

Norris, who has thrown out a league-leading 14 would-be base-stealers, has hit .291/.329/.475 with three home runs and 25 RBI in 141 at-bats.

"He gives you a tough at-bat, he grinds it out, he fouls pitches off, he swings enough at the first pitch to make the pitcher leery of the first-pitch strike," Black said. "He gives you what you look for in a tough at-bat."

Norris is batting second for the third straight game on Thursday.

Padres' Derek Norris delivers game-winning hit vs. Cubs

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/20/2015) Padres catcher Derek Norris had a two-RBI double in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game against the Cubs, which broke a 2-all tie and eventually stood as the game-winning hit in a 4-3 victory.

Norris is batting just .254 (15 for 59) with 15 strikeouts in 16 May games. However, he has a .492 slugging percentage, one triple, two home runs, six doubles, seven runs and 14 RBI this month.

Padres C Derek Norris homers and triples, drives in five on Friday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/15/2015) Padres catcher Derek Norris had himself a ballgame on Friday against the Nationals. Norris went 2 for 5 with a three-run home run, a double and five RBI, as the Padres cruised to a 8-3 victory.

The three-run bomb, Norris' third of the year, came in the first inning to give the Padres the early advantage, one they would never give back. He added his two-run triple the very next inning, both hits coming off starter Doug Fister.

"I put a couple big swings on a couple mistakes," he said, per MLB.com. "After a bit of a tough road trip for me, it was nice to get off to a good start."

Norris raised his batting average to .304, as he continues to have an impressive start with his new ballclub.

"He's had a nice [first] six weeks of the season," manager Bud Black said. "He's got that [power] in him. That was huge for us tonight."

Padres C Austin Hedges makes first MLB start on Wednesday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/6/2015) Padres top catching prospect Austin Hedges will make his first career start in Wednesday's game against the Padres. Hedges was recalled from Triple-A to make his Major League debut on Monday, and appeared as a pinch hitter that evening.

Hedges will now make the start for Derek Norris who is getting the day off Wednesday. The two will likely be sharing time with Hedges as the season continues. Manager Bud Black insisted that Hedges will get playing time, and Wednesday seems to be an indication of that fact.

Padres' Black on Derek Norris playing first: 'we're thinking about it'

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/6/2015) With the Padres' recent call-up of prized catching prospect Austin Hedges, manager Bud Black has offered a potential solution to getting him in the lineup more often, while also playing current catcher Derek Norris. Black said Tuesday that Norris could start taking some groundballs at first base, and might see some time there this season.

"It would just be against certain left-handed pitchers, we want to keep his bat in the lineup, like for a day game after a night game, or if he's caught consecutive games," Black said, per MLB.com. "Take the load off his feet from catching."

Norris has played just one game at first base during his career, and that was in 2013. But Black expressed confidence that Norris could handle a transition.

"It would be a gradual build-up of reps. We are working through this," Black said. "But he was an amateur third baseman. He has good hands, good feet and a good baseball mind. This will not happen quick, but we're thinking about it."

Black: C Austin Hedges will 'get playing time' for Padres

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2015) Bud Black confirmed Tuesday that newcomer Austin Hedges will receive a significant opporunity to play behind the plate for the Padres.

"I think he makes our roster better," Black told MLB Network Radio. "Derek Norris is our catcher but Austin is going to get playing time."

Norris has certainly not done anything at the plate to warrant a decrease in work. He owns a slash line of .323/.343/.500 with two home runs and 16 RBI. Hedges has been equally impressive in Triple-A with a .343 mark and two homers in 67 at-bats.

Black offered that Norris could be moved on occasion to first base when Hedges catches.

Padres catcher Derek Norris dealing with ankle issue

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4/29/2015) While Padres catcher Derek Norris would've likely taken Wednesday's game off because it was a day game after a night game, the day off also had to do with an ankle injury he suffered in Tuesday's game, reports MLB.com.

"Derek's a little banged up," manager Bud Black said.

Norris took a foul tip off his ankle during Tuesday's game, but he remained in the game. Norris was available to pinch hit Wednesday, but with the Padres also off Thursday, Black said everyone could use the rest.

"It's good for everyone," Black said. "I think that we've played the most games in all of baseball. It's good, because we've played a lot of games here early. It gives the fellas a full day. Off-days at home when you're not traveling are good."

Padres' Derek Norris, Alexi Amarista homer in win

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/26/2015) The Padres got a solo home run each from Derek Norris and Alexi Amarista in Sunday's 3-1 victory over the Dodgers.

Amarista hit a solo shot in the third inning and Norris homered in the seventh. It was both Norris and Amarista's first home run of the season.

Norris finished the game 2 of 3 with two RBI. In the fourth inning, Norris hit an RBI double that scored Matt Kemp. Norris is now hitting .324/.342/.493.

Amarista finished the game 1 of 3 and is hitting .227/.370/.364.

Padres' Justin Upton (quad) out of lineup Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/19/2015) Padres left fielder Justin Upton is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs due to a quad strain.

It'll be the first game this season Upton hasn't started for the Padres. He's hit .326/.373/.630 with three home runs and eight RBI in 46 at-bats. He felt better after receiving postgame treatment, MLB.com reports, and the injury doesn't appear to be serious.

"We’re optimistic about it," manager Bud Black said before Sunday's game, per U-T San Diego. "We will watch it, treat it and hopefully it will be all right (Monday). And if not, hopefully Tuesday. We’re not going to push this. When you’re talking muscle strains, you never really know."

With Upton sidelined, Will Venable will draw the start in left field, while catcher Derek Norris will shift to the cleanup spot after not starting Saturday.

The Padres are underdogs (+120) in Chicago Sunday.

Derek Norris out of Padres lineup on Saturday

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4/18/2015) Padres catcher Derek Norris is not in the team's starting lineup for Saturday's game at the Cubs.

Padres' Wil Myers, Derek Norris back in lineup

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/13/2015) The Padres will have outfielder Wil Myers and catcher Derek Norris are back in the lineup for Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, according to team announcer Bob Scanlan.

Both players had the day off against the Giants, though Myers did see a pinch-hitting appearance during Sunday's 6-4 loss. This move puts Will Venable and Wil Nieves into a bench role for Monday's game.

Padres to start Wil Nieves at catcher Sunday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/12/2015) Padres manager Bud Black has decided to start Wil Nieves at catcher Sunday against the Giants to give Derek Norris the day off, reports MLB.com.

It will be Nieves' first start of the season and first in a Padre uniform since 2002. He hit .254 with one home run and seven RBI in 122 at-bats in 2014 with the Phillies.

Derek Norris off to quick start batting second for Padres

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/8/2015) Padres catcher Derek Norris is off to a quick start this season, batting .444 (4 for 9) with two doubles and two RBI in two games. It's a nice turnaround for Norris, who began spring training mired in a 3-for-31 slump before going 10 for 17 over his final six spring games.

"I had a lot on my plate early in the spring, trying to learn a pitching staff, a coaching staff. Not that I'm complaining, but it's a lot to learn," he said, per MLB.com. "Once I got on the ground with everyone, I focused on my hitting a little more. For me, it's a matter of getting that timing."

Manager Bud Black is pleased with what he is seeing from Norris, who was picked up in a December trade with Oakland.

"He's playing a good all-around game," Black said. "We've talked about both his offensive production that we think is going to be there and the demanding position of handling a pitching staff and doing what we need for him to do behind the plate.

"He's up for it, up for the challenge. We're going to hit him in the second hole and see how that goes."

Padres catcher Derek Norris turning the corner offensively

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2015) Padres catcher Derek Norris is starting to get his timing down at the plate after opening the spring mired in a 2-for-29 slump. He has gone 3 for 5 with one home run and two RBI in his last two spring games, to raise his average from .069 to .147.

“I was starting too late, instead of starting early and being easy with it,” Norris said of his leg kick, per U-T San Diego. “I was being late and quick with it, so it caused a lot of head movement, not recognizing pitches well enough. So I’m just trying to slow the game down and just let my natural ability take place.

“(I've been) just a little jumpy. When you’re a little bit jumpy, it just means you’re late. For me, my leg kick, getting it up early, getting it down, so when your lead foot hits, that’s when you can start to fire and hit. Whenever it’s late, then you have to rush and it all gets out of whack. So just get it up early, nice and easy, and it’s been a lot better the last few days.”

Norris added learning a new pitching staff might have also contributed to his slow start.

“My priority’s definitely getting to know these guys on the mound," he said. "That’s No. 1. Obviously, everybody would love to go 4 for 4 every day. In my case, controlling a pitching staff and getting to know these guys is priority No. 1, and I definitely put that ahead of everything else, ahead of hitting, ahead of weightlifting.”
