Derek Norris sidelined with back spasms

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3/7/2014) Back spasms had Athletics catcher Derek Norris scratched from the lineup on Friday. He was originally scheduled to handle the duties for the Oakland debut of left-hander Scott Kasmir. Norris is expected to remain out through at least Saturday.

Norris has experienced the same symptons before. He missed some games last August with back spasms.

Athletics' catcher situation could create a win-win scenario

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(1/27/2014) When the San Francisco Chronicle recently reported that Stephen Vogt and Derek Norris will likely platoon at catcher this season for the Athletics, leaving John Jaso to serve frequently as the designated hitter, the news hardly set the Fantasy world on fire. While Jaso's shift away from catching won't have an impact in shallower leagues, it's a noteworthy development for some standard mixed league owners and all deep league owners.

Jaso, who was out due to a concussion from late July through the postseason in 2013, should play more often and be less vulnerable to injury as a DH, and the extra plate appearances catapult him into relevance in two-catcher mixed leagues. As a left-handed hitter, Vogt is expected to assume the larger role in the catching platoon with Norris, and he has enough power to be worth a pick or a few dollars in deeper mixed leagues and AL-only formats. His limited upside in terms of batting average and on-base percentage does keep him from mattering in standard and shallow mixed leagues.

Norris will fill a similar role to the one he had over the second half of last season, so of the A's catching trio, he is the only one who doesn't stand to gain much Fantasy value. Owners can relegate him to AL-only leagues.
