(10/17/2013) The Phillies have re-signed outfielder Michael Martinez, MLBDailyDish.com reports. Martinez elected free agency after being outrighted off the 40-man roster in early October but came to an agreement to stay with the team.

Martinez, 31, went 7 for 40 with no extra-base hits in 29 appearances with the Phillies in 2013. He has appeared in 162 games with the team over a three-year span, hitting .187/.234/.261 with five home runs, 34 RBI and four stolen bases in 364 at-bats.

(10/3/2013) The Phillies cleared four spots on the 40-man roster Thursday, outrighting infielders Michael Martinez and Pete Orr as well as pitchers Zach Miner and Mauricio Robles.

Martinez went 7 for 40 with the Phillies this season and has hit .187/.234/.261 with five home runs and 34 RBI in 364 at-bats over his three-year career. Orr went 4 for 20 this season, giving him a .247/.293/.306 line with no home runs, 11 RBI and six stolen bases in 170 at-bats over three seasons with the Phillies.

Miner made 16 relief appearances for the Phillies this season, posting a 4.40 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 20:17 K:BB ratio in 28 2/3 innings. Robles allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings over three appearances with the Phillies while posting a 1.97 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 63:44 K:BB ratio in 64 innings over two minor-league levels in 2013.

Martinez is on his way to Minnesota, where the Phillies are playing. Martinez could replace Cesar Hernandez as the backup infielder, but no move has been announced.
