Blue Jays sign Lopez, Fox, Gindl to minor-league deals

(12/12/2014) The Blue Jays signed pitcher Wilton Lopez, first baseman Jake Fox and outfielder Caleb Gindl to minor-league deals with invitations to spring training, Sportsnet.ca reports.

Lopez made four appearances with the Rockies in 2014 while also delivering a 4.57 ERA and 35:6 K:BB ratio in 43 1/3 Triple-A innings. Fox last played in the majors in 2011 and spent 2014 in Double-A, the Mexican League and the independent Atlantic League, posting a combined .309/.387/.592 line with 38 home runs and 118 RBI in 517 at-bats. Gindl made eight appearances with the Brewers in 2014 while hitting .227/.310/.354 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 362 at-bats with Triple-A Nashville.

Gindle had just three hits in 19 at-bats with the Brewers earlier in the season, while Burgos finished the season with a 6.50 ERA in 18 innings at Triple-A Nashville before undergoing shoulder surgery.

Gindl has received significant playing time his promotion Friday, but hasn't had a hit since his first game. Davis has been equally cold. He's in a 5-for-37 slide.

(2/9/2014) Although it appears Khris Davis is the favorite to open the season in left field for the Brewers, manager Ron Roenicke said he will have to earn the job this spring, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"I think we have three guys we're going to look at — Caleb Gindl, Logan Schafer and Khris," Roenicke said. "I'm not saying we're going into camp saying, 'You're definitely our left fielder.' He'll have the opportunity certainly because of what we think he can be offensively, and he did a nice job for us defensively. I'll get him out there as much as we can.

"If we get close to the season and he's not swinging it at all, and Gindl and Schafer are swinging, an opportunity (for them) will be better. Khris has more of an upside offensively, especially from a power and RBI standpoint, so that's how we're looking at it."

(9/16/2013) Brewers outfielder Caleb Gindl had a monster game Monday night during a win over the Cubs. Gindl reached base four times and drove in three runs.

Gindl helped the Brewers win the game 6-1 as he went 3 for 3 with a walk. He finished just a double shy of the cycle as he hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning and a two-run homer in the seventh. He added a single and scored three times. He's batting .261 after the big performance.

The 25-year-old has homered in back-to-back games and now has five on the year to go with 14 runs batted in over his first 49 games at the major league level.

(8/11/2013) Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Saturday he will continue to play the hot hand in left field, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He's used Logan Schafer, Caleb Gindl and Khris Davis in left field since Ryan Braun was suspended for the rest of the season, with Gindl getting the most playing time as of late.

"I've got three guys I like and want to put out there," Roenicke said. "Gindl's out there because he's swung the bat better than all of them. If he continues, then he'll be out there."

Manager Ron Roenicke said Gindl has earned his way into the starting lineup since he is batting .385 (10 for 26) with one home run, four RBI and six doubles in his last nine games.

Gindl, who went 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter in the loss, was 5 for 20 with two runs, one RBI and one stolen bases. He has hit .274/.341/.456 with eight home runs, 38 RBI and one stolen base in 237 at-bats in Triple-A this season.

"The last two weeks, he has really swung the bat well," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said to MLB.com. "He hangs in there, gives you a nice at-bat.
