Rays-Orioles game postponed Tuesday

(4/15/2014) The Rays/Orioles game was postponed Tuesday due to inclement weather. No date yet has been announced for a makeup game.

Jake Odorizzi was scheduled to start for the Rays before he was scratched in favor of reliever Brandon Gomes because of the weather. Miguel Gonzalez was expected to start for Baltimore.

(4/15/2014) Rays starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi was unable to start Tuesday at Baltimore, a day after being sent back to the team's hotel because he wasn't feeling well. Reliever Brandon Gomes was tabbed to make the emergency start for Tampa Bay.

Odorizzi said he feels better and could have started Tuesday, but the team decided not to start him cause of the bad weather in Baltimore.

(4/5/2014) Rays pitcher Brandon Gomes was awarded the win on Saturday against the Rangers.

Gomes (1-0) needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order in the eighth inning. James Loney doubled in two runs in the bottom of the frame and Grant Balfour picked up the save in the ninth, securing a 5-4 win. He has allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three over 2 2/3 innings pitched this season.

Gomes threw a scoreless inning in his first appearance since a setback in early June. He is expected to be ready in early August but could be optioned to Triple-A upon his return. He owns a 5.40 ERA in 11 2/3 innings this year.

(7/7/2013) Rays reliever Brandon Gomes resumed throwing Saturday after discomfort in his strained right lat caused him to miss a rehab start earlier last week. The Rays have yet to set a date for his rehab assignment.

"We wanted to let it slow down," Gomes said, per MLB.com. "Hopefully, that's the end of it and we can move the process along quicker than it was the last time."

Gomes suffered a setback in his recovery in late June and has been sidelined since May 7 with the injury. The Rays have not announced a concrete timetable for his return.

(5/10/2013) The Rays placed pitcher Brandon Gomes on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained right lat, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The move is retroactive to Wednesday, the day after the right-hander's last appearance.

Gomes has worked 1/3 of an inning in each of his previous three games to trim his ERA to 5.40. The Rays promoted Josh Lueke from Triple-A Durham to take his spot on the roster.

(3/26/2013) Tampa Bay has optioned pitcher Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. "I knew it was a possibility," Gomes said. "I'm not happy about it, but that's how it goes."

With Gomes cut, that means reliever Jamey Wright has made the Rays' bullpen. Wright, 38, has allowed seven earned runs this spring over 10 innings for a 6.30 ERA with three strikeouts and had an opt-out clause if he didn't make the team.

Gomes, 28, pitched to a 1.74 ERA this spring over 10 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts. He made 15 appearances for the Rays last year and went 2-2 with a 5.09 ERA. Gomes was much sharper the year prior for Tampa Bay with a 2-1 record and 2.92 ERA over 40 appearances.
