(5/12/2014) The Phillies announced Monday outfielder Darin Ruf (oblique) and pitcher Ethan Martin (shoulder) had their rehab assignments moved from Class A Clearwater to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ruf hit .250 (3 for 12) with two RBI in three games for Clearwater, while Martin tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings over three relief appearances. He allowed three hits and issued three walks.

(5/5/2014) Phillies pitcher Ethan Martin (shoulder) started a minor-league rehab assignment on Sunday, tossing a scoreless inning with Class A Clearwater, MLB.com reports. The Phillies are expected to bring him back as reliever, when healthy.

"There's some grooming there, but it'll also allow him to build his arm up at a reasonable pace, reasonable time frame, but also keep tabs on him," manager Ryne Sandberg said.

(2/27/2014) Phillies right-hander Ethan Martin was accompanied off the mound by a trainer Thursday after yielding three quick runs against Detroit and lacking velocity on his fastball. He topped out at 85 mph, per the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 24-year-old Martin is working as a starter, but is not expected to land a spot in the rotation after splitting time in the bullpen last year and compiling a gaudy 6.08 ERA in 15 appearances, including eight starts. Control was an issue - he walked 26 in just 40 innings.

Martin impressed pitching coach Bob McClure in a bullpen session Tuesday. McClure said Martin will continue to prepare as a starter. Last year, Martin filled both roles in 40 innings with the club. While Martin will be stretched out, he could still wind up in the bullpen. "For me, if he's lengthened to three or four innings and then hold him there for a while, you can lengthen him from there for starting or put him in the 'pen," McClure said.

Martin, who was moved back to the bullpen toward the end of the season, made his first start since Sept. 3, allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two over three innings pitched for a no-decision.

He finished the year with a 6.08 ERA, a 1.70 WHIP and a 47:26 K:BB ratio in 40 innings pitched.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, the game went deep into extra innings and they had to use scheduled Sunday starter Tyler Cloyd to pitch multiple innings. Martin earned the win, his second as a major leaguer, as he gave up just two runs on four hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six in the performance.

Martin lowered his ERA to 5.23 in throwing 90 pitches. He's 2-2 and has allowed six runs over his last 16 1/3 innings. He's been solid of late and Philadelphia's new manager Ryne Sandberg will give him another start Saturday against Arizona.

Martin has allowed four earned runs over his last 10 innings pitched. He has allowed four home runs over his first three starts this season. He owns a 6.59 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP over that span. He is scheduled to make his next start Monday at home against Colorado.
