Christian Friedirch sent down, leaving Sunday start open

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(7/3/2014) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs Thursday, to make room on the active roster for Nolan Arenado's return from the disabled list.

Sending Friedrich down opens up a spot in the rotation for the Rockies, as he was set to start Sunday against the Dodgers. The team's plans are not yet known.

Christian Friedrich struggles in loss vs. Nationals

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/1/2014) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich took a loss Tuesday after giving up five earned runs on five hits and four walks in just 3 1/3 innings and striking out three in his team's 7-1 defeat against the Nationals.

Friedrich (0-3) gave up three runs in the first inning, and the Nationals were able to score four more in the fourth, with two of those runs getting charged to the starter. His outings have gotten progressively worse, and he's lost all three of his starts with the major-league club. Friedrich owns a 9.45 ERA and 14:8 K:BB ratio in 13 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Dodgers Sunday.

Christian Friedrich rocked again by Brewers

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/27/2014) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich was hit hard again Thursday, in a 7-4 loss to the Brewers.

After allowing four earned runs in six innings in his first start of the season -- also against the Brewers -- Friedrich had trouble yet again this time around. He was charged with five runs on nine hits in four innings of work this time around, though he did strike out eight batters while walking just one on 87 pitches.

Friedrich has lost each of his two starts since joining the Rockies' rotation, while allowing nine earned runs in 10 innings. His next turn in the rotation is set for Tuesday in Washington.

Christian Friedrich takes loss Saturday vs. Brewers

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(6/21/2014) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich was charged with a loss Saturday after giving up nine runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks in six innings while striking out four in his team's 9-4 defeat against the Brewers.

Friedrich (0-1) wasn't able to earn a positive result in his 2014 debut, but he was victimized by unearned runs during both the second and third innings, when the Brewers scored eight runs against the pitcher. Friedrich doesn't have another start scheduled, but he could be an option Thursday in a series opener against the Brewers.

Christian Friedrich called up for start Saturday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6/21/2014) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich has been called up for a start Saturday.

The move had been rumored, and shouldn't come as a big surprise. The team demoted Kyle Parker in order to make room for Friedrich on the active roster.

Report: Christian Friedrich likely to start Saturday

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/19/2014) The Rockies are likely to recall pitcher Christian Friedrich to start Saturday against the Brewers, according to MLB.com Thursday.

Friedrich, who has not appeared in the majors since 2012, is expected to fill the recently vacated rotation spot opened by a slew of injuries and underperformance. Friedrich has not been confirmed as the starter, however his status on the 40-man roster and recent pitching schedule suggest he is the most-likely option.

Friedrich has struggled at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season, posting a 7.89 ERA in 13 starts. He had a 6.17 ERA in 84 2/3 innings for the Rockies in 2012 before a back injury ended his season.

Rockies send four down to minors

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/13/2014) The Rockies have optioned left-hander Christian Friedrich, infielder Cristhian Adames, first baseman Kyle Parker and outfielder Kent Matthes down to the minors on Thursday, MLB.com reports.

Christian Friedrich has no restrictions

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/26/2014) Rockies starting pitcher Christian Friedrich, who missed most of last season due to a back injury, is eager to start Monday's spring game against the Diamondbacks.

"I’m throwing everything now," Friedrich said, per The Denver Post. "Some of the pitches I threw (Tuesday in live batting practice) felt really good. I was really able to let them go. I’ve had no issues with the back. There are no brakes being put on me, so whatever I can handle, I can handle."

With the news Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) might not be ready for opening day, there could be two spots in the rotation up for grabs this spring. Friedrich believes he is far enough along in his recovery to compete for a rotation job, but he knows the decision isn't up to him.

"I’ve been around this team long enough to know that we are going to need seven our eight guys through the course of our season," Friedrich said. "So you don’t look at just those five spots."

Christian Friedrich in mix for spot in Rockies' rotation?

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/25/2014) If Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin is out an extended period of time due to a shoulder injury, Patrick Saunders of the The Denver Post wrote Tuesday to "keep an eye" on starting pitcher Christian Friedrich, who missed most of last season due to a back injury.

Saunders said Friedrich has pitched well early in camp and the left-handed pitcher said "he feels strong."

Though, the early indications this spring is that the Rockies would like Friedrich to re-establish himself in the minors before joining the major-league rotation. However, Chacin's injury could change the team's opening day rotation plans.

Owner indicates Christian Friedrich is ticketed for minors

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/11/2014) Rockies chairman and CEO Dick Monfort was asked on Twitter Tuesday what are the chances starting pitcher Christian Friedrich returns to the rotation this season.

However, Monfort indicated Friedrich, who missed most of last season due to a back injury, will have to re-establish himself in the minors before being recalled.

"Friedrich is coming along," Monfort responded. "His back is good. He's a competitive kid. (He will) have to build strength in minors but could be a factor."

Back injury forces Christian Friedrich to alter delivery

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/9/2014) Rockies starting pitcher Christian Friedrich, who was limited to four starts at Triple-A last season because of back problems, told The Denver Post he is throwing bullpen sessions.

"So far, no setbacks," Rockies pitching coach Jim Wright said. "Most of all, first of all, we want him to be healthy.

"Christian has the potential to be a premier left-hander. He's a great athlete. I know it's killed him not to throw. It was never a question if he had the stuff. We have high hopes."

Friedrich added he had to adjust his mechanics to compensate for the back injury, which began to bother him in the summer of 2012 during his first stint in the majors.

"I didn't realize I was doing it at the time, but I started throwing across my body, and all of the force was going through my back instead of toward the plate," he said. "So I think the problem in my right leg was a huge problem, not being able to finish toward the target. I think that's what caused it."

Christian Friedrich activated for Rockies

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11/4/2013)
The Colorado Rockies have activated pitcher Christian Friedrich from the 60-day disabled list Monday. He was limited to just four starts at Triple-A this season due to ongoing back issues. He may not be ready for spring training.

Christian Friedrich placed on DL after recall

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Christian Friedrich continues to rehab back injury

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/6/2013) Rockies starting pitcher Christian Friedrich has remained in Arizona since spring training to rehab a back injury, but he could soon move his rehab to Triple-A Colorado Springs, according to The Denver Post

"It seems as if it was a couple of days ago and I was pitching in spring training and the next thing I know, it's June," Friedrich said.

Friedrich is eager to get back on a mound and hopefully rejoin the Rockies' rotation this year.

"I've never been more confident that I can get back," Friedrich said. "I want to let this (back) calm down. I've learned to accept the rehab process. I want to get back being as healthy as I can be."

Christian Friedrich rehabbing back

by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com
(5/6/2013) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich told MLB.com Monday that he is doing everything he can to make sure his back is healthy.

The left-hander is on the disabled list for Triple-A Colorado Springs and is rehabbing in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"The back is getting better, and I'm on a good rehab program," Friedrich said. "I've been here about a week and hope to be here for two, maybe three more. There's no real timetable since it's symptomatic, and we're going off how it feels. But so far, so good."

Friedrich went 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA in four starts for Colorado Springs before going on the DL.

Christian Friedrich heads rotation at Triple-A

by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com
(4/2/2013) Rockies prospect Christian Friedrich will start the season opener for Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday, MLB.com reports. Friedrich, who is returning from a stress fracture in his lower back, was competing for a spot in the major-league rotation during the spring.

The left-hander went 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA in 16 starts for Colorado last season.

Rockies make several roster moves

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(3/24/2013) The Rockies made several roster moves on Sunday as they moved pitchers Tyler Chatwood, Rob Scahill, Christian Friedrich and Josh Outman, catcher Gustavo Molina, second baseman Charlie Culberson, first baseman Ben Paulsen and outfielders Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson to minor-league camp.

Christian Friedrich's rotation hopes fading

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/22/2013) Rockies starting pitcher Christian Friedrich has been considered a long shot to make the rotation in spring training, after being sidelined for a few weeks with a back injury. He did not make a very strong case in his second appearance Friday, as the Giants got to him early and often in Cactus League action. Friedrich allowed four runs on five hits and a walk in three innings of work. He allowed three of his five runs on a pair of home runs, while striking out three batters in an 11-6 loss.

After the game, the Denver Post reported that Drew Pomeranz has emerged as the clear leader for the fifth spot in the rotation unless the team makes an addition prior to opening day.

Christian Friedrich makes Cactus League debut

by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com
(3/19/2013) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich made his Cactus League debut on Monday night against the Reds. He allowed two runs on four hits over two innings of work. Friedrich, who is a rotation candidate, was slowed this spring while recovering from a stress fracture in his back.

Friedrich went 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA in 16 starts in the majors last season.

Friedrich 'not rushing it'

(3/5/2013) MLB.com reports Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich threw his third bullpen session of the spring on Tuesday. The left-hander has yet to appear in a Cactus League game as he continues to recover from a stress fracture in his back. "They said I might be involved in [Friday's simulated game]," Friedrich said. "We're not rushing it. I want to see hitters as fast as possible, but we want to make sure another important part is getting stiff after sitting down."

Friedrich recovering from injuries

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/28/2013) MLB.com reports Rockies starting pitcher Christian Friedrich (back, neck) is making positive progress after throwing bullpen sessions Monday and Wednesday. "No pain," Friedrich said. "Everything's as it should be. I'm recovering well. I threw all my pitches. I couldn't ask for it to feel better." Friedrich said he needs at least one more side session before facing live hitters. He said he's possibly 7-10 days from pitching in a game. "I hope I'm not too far behind. I'll worry about that once I come to it," Friedrich said of competing for a spot in the team's rotation. "Everyone else is hating it, but I'll take any extra time I can to get past this minor setback."

Friedrich might pitch next week

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/27/2013) The Denver Post reports Rockies starting pitcher Christian Friedrich, who has been sidelined because of back and neck stiffness, will throw a 35-pitch bullpen session Wednesday. He is expected to throw another bullpen session later in the week before facing live batting practice. Barring any setbacks, he could make his spring debut next week.

Rays targeting Friedrich?

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/24/2013) The Denver Post reports a major-league source said the Rockies have discussed an interest in trading for Rays starting pitcher Jeff Niemann. The Rays have expressed interest in Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich. The talks reportedly began before spring training. Friedrich has been hampered this spring because of back and neck stiffness. He throw off the mound Saturday and will throw in the bullpen Monday. “I am not worried about any of that," Friedrich said of the trade rumors. "I want to pitch. I am looking forward to PFP (pitcher fundamentals practice), to getting back out there with my teammates."

Friedrich 'a little slowed down'

(2/12/2013) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich told MLB.com on Tuesday that the back injury that ended his 2012 campaign is still lingering but he doesn't believe it will be a long-term issue. The left-hander went 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA in 16 starts last season before a stress fracture on the right side of his lower spine sidelined him late July. "One morning two weeks ago, I woke up to go play catch ... it wasn't the same pain, just something where I had to take a step back so it could come down," said Friedrich. "The past five days, I've felt much better. I think I'm just a little slowed down. I'll miss a bullpen or two at the most."
